  Eight Beats of Ganzhou Song

  For a Buddhist Friend

  Su Shi

  The heart-stirring breeze brings in the tidal bore;

The heartless wind sees it flow out from river shore.

  At the river’s mouth

  Or the ferry south,

How many times have we heard parting chimes?

  Don’t grieve over the past!

  The world changes fast.

  Who could be like me,

  Though white-haired, yet carefree?

Do not forsake the western shore of the lake:

  On fine day the vernal hills are green;

On rainy day they are veiled by misty screen.

  Few poets would be

Such bosom friends as you and me.

Do not forget in our old age,

  We’ll live together in hermitage.

  Even if I should disappear,

You should not turn to weep for your compeer.

  The Lingering Clouds

Thick and dusty, the lingering clouds,

  Misty and drizzling, the season’s rain;

In all directions, the haze unbroken,

The level roads are blocked from access.

Quietly I retire to my eastern porch,

I drink the spring wine all alone.

My good friends are far, far away,

With anxiety I watch and wait.

The lingering clouds, thick and dusky,

  The season’s rain, misty and drizzling;

In all directions, the haze unbroken,

The level roads, with waters swelling.

Wine, wine, here comes the wine,

I drink at leisure by my eastern window.

Fondly I think of my dear old friends,

But no wagon nor boat is within my call.

The trees in the eastern garden,

Break out in green leaves again.

Nature rushes forth to look its best,

Stirring my blood to answer the summons.

But how true the common saying goes,

That the sun and the moon rise and wane,

Shouldn’t we rather sit close together,

To talk about life’s shifting scenes?

  Fluttering, fluttering, the light birds

Come to rest on my garden branches,

  Perching in quiet contentment;

Sweetly to one another they sing.

True it is I have other friends,

But now I think of you most,

What I wish I cannot get,

How vexed am I to think of this!

  The Story of a Myna

  Pu Songling

Wang Fenbin said that in his village there was a man who had a myna. He trained it to speakand they got attached to each other. Wherever he went he took it with him. They had beentogether for years.

When he was arriving at Jiangzhou one day, he found that he had run out of money. He wasupset, not knowing what to do. The myna said, "Why not sell me? Take me to the perfect andyou can sell me for a good price and traveling expenses will be no problem." The man said, "Ican't bear to sell you." The myna said, "That's nothing. As soon as you get the money, getaway from here quickly and wait for e under a big tree about twenty li west of town." The mantook its advice. He went to town with the bird, engaging it in brief conversations. Soon theyattracted many onlookers. The steward of the perfect saw the bird and told the prefect about it.The prefect summoned the man to his house and he wanted to buy the bird. The man said, "We depend on each other for survival. I cannot sell it to you." The prefect asked the bird, "Doyou like to stay with me?" The bird answered, "Yes, I do." The prefect was delighted to hear it.Then the bird said again, "Give him ten liang of silver and no more." The prefect was all themore delighted. He gave the man ten liang of silver. The man left, with a feigned look ofdejection.

The prefect asked the bird questions and the bird answered with great readiness. He ordered togive it meat to eat. The moment it finished the eat, the bird said, "I want to take a bath." Theprefect ordered to bring a gold basin, fill it with water, open the cage and let it bathe in it. Whenthe bath was over, the bird flew up to the eave where it shook off the water and trimmed itsplumage, in the meantime, chattering away with the prefect. In another moment its plumagewas dried and the bird fluttered up, saying in the local accent, "I am going, sir." When theylooked up to see, the bird was out of sight. The prefect and his servants could do nothing butsigh toward the sky. When servants were sent to look for the birdman he was nowhere to befound. Later someone, traveling to Shaanxi, saw the man with his bird in Xi'an.

This story is told by Mr. Bi Zaiji.
