Li Yinhe, Reading Enriches My Life
Famous Chinese sexologist Li Yinhe in April released her new book „the Reading of my Soul‟, another book collecting her essays on life philosophy. [Baidu Image]
When I was 17 years old, I was sent to a desert area in north China‟s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in the „Up to the Mountains and Down to the Countryside Movement‟-a policy instituted in late 1970s and early 1980s that declared certain privileged urban youth would be sent to mountainous areas or farming villages in order to learn from the workers and farmers. When I came back to Beijing 3 years later, I was jobless for about half a year because I did get a Beijing Hukou (household registration).
At that time I read all famous foreign literature books that I could found-from my parents‟ and their friends‟ collections -even though those books were not allowed to read during the Cultural Revolution period. When I was in Inner Mongolia, I suffered from not only the drought in the desert climate but also „spiritual drought‟ due to the lack of access to knowledge. The newly-released book collected the reading notes on the books that I read during that period.
Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy said that young readers who could not grasp the essence
of good book had better not read the world-famous literature works on the grounds that this would ruin the cherished first impression on a good book. Even if they may get a better understanding of these classical books when they reread at an elder age, they lost the delight that they could only gain through the first-time reading.
I felt so lucky that I began to read all these good books at the age of 20. On one hand, I already had the reading ability to explore the essence of books; on the other hand, I was not too old to be passionate for reading. Reading gave me great discernment and enabled me to get rid of some outdated and pedantic concepts. I felt like getting a key made to open the door of our life to long-term happiness.
I was deeply impressed with two books. One is the „Ninety-Three‟ by French writer Victor Hugo, which takes its title from the year 1793, the year of the French Revolution, and made me shocked through the vivid and in-depth descriptions of many scenarios.
The other book is „1984‟ by George Orwell. I had to read the book secretly in the Cultural Revolution period and the scenarios described in the book were very similar to the social situation at that time. Now I still can clearly remember the nervousness when I was reading it, and each „reactionary‟ sentence in the book could make me criticized by the public and even throw me into the prison.
I started to write novels after I retired. Recently I finished a medium-length novel „2084‟, 100 years after 1984. This book was deeply influenced by „1984‟ which is also the first subtitle of the first chapter of „2084‟.
I have finished two sadomasochism novels and am writing the third one. I have not decided whether to publish these works and the writer Feng Tang has wrote a preface for me. A Hong Kong book company has also gave me a contract in a hope of publishing the two novels but I tore up it because I thought it was not the good time to publish them.
I mentioned one of Shakespeare‟s tragedies „Hamlet‟ in my book and I guessed most people in the world heard of the famous quote “To be, or not to be--that is the question.” I thought the sentence focused on the human‟s courage and discussed the choice between putting up with everything as well as keeping alive without serious ambition and respect and fighting against the endless suffering.
In my opinion „Hamlet‟ is an interesting book and I recommended all students majoring in literature to read it. But I thought it is a must-read book for those who wanted to be a happy, educated and civilized person. When young readers read the book like „Hamlet‟, they will be inspired to consider what life they want to lead when they grow up and they can learn a lot from the characters in the book.
Actually there are some other characters in literature have something in common with Hamlet that those young man of noble birth were not satisfied with the reality and wanted to lead a new life but in vain because vision without action is merely a dream. This also happens to many Chinese university graduates. I have got in touch with some very excellent and ambitious university students who dream of do something extraordinary and refused to do something they don‟t like, and what they need most is down-to-earth efforts. The characters in the Russian literature can still mirror some current social realities in China.
I have read the novel „What is to be Done” written by Russian writer Nikolay Gavrilovich Chernyshevsky when I was young. A revolutionist in the book sleeps on a bed of nails and eats only raw steak in order to build strength for revolution. I think Chinese youth can take him as an example to have strong will.
Some students asked me how to remember the contents of the book when they were reading. Reading is a sort of enjoyment and when you immerse yourself into the delight of reading, you will find it easy to remember what you read. If you don‟t like to read some book, then close the book and don‟t force yourself to continue to read.

Rural Woman Adopts 80 Kids

A rural woman from southwest China’s Guizhou Province adopted over 80 children over the past 12 years, most of whom are disabled, and all of whom she has surnamed Min, which means “people” in Chinese.
Xiao Xingying, from Anshun City, in the mid-west of Guizhou, who only ever attained a junior middle school level of education, became locally famous for her kindness and has been dubbed “Leifeng Mom.” Lei Feng was a young Chinese soldier in the 1960s, known for devoting almost all of his spare time and money to selflessly helping the needy.
Xiao adopted her first abandoned child in 1997, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and died five years later. Xiao named him Qiang, meaning strength in Chinese, hoping that the baby would be strong enough to face the inevitable difficulties she expected him to face in life.
“Despite massaging and bathing him every day, he still died,” Xiao recalled sadly, “But I would like to believe that miracles can still occur to these poor children.”
Another child suffering from cerebral palsy who spent six years bedridden can now walk all by himself as a result of Xiao’s considerate and persistent care.
With her status as a suitable guardian granted by the local civil affairs department, Xiao adopted eight more abandoned children in 2002. This number had surged to 80 by 2006. People in neighboring villages heard of her kindness, and some even came to leave their babies at the gate of Xiao’s home.
The local government gives each of these adopted child 600 yuan (U.S. ) per month to satisfy their basic living needs, and Xiao said she surnamed all of them Min to enable the children to remember that it is the people that nurture them.
Xiao said that the happiest thing for her is to receive greetings from her children who are currently working in cities.
“Although I was so busy caring for all my kids that I had no time to attend any parties for classmates’ reunions, and I have distanced myself form my relatives over the past decade, I don’t regret anything,” said Xiao.
“All people who know her regard Xiao as a kindhearted person,” said Li Chu, who works for a local government agency.
Now five of Xiao’s adopted children have been able to attend primary schools, and an 18-year-old girl is working in south China’s Guangdong Province.
