擴(kuò)展：“before”的常見錯誤用法
錯用 "before"常會產(chǎn)生誤會。一次某同學(xué)在作文中寫道：
We had our summer holidays before we had the final examination1.
在我們期終考試前，我們先放了暑假。
上面的句子，從語法角度看，完全正確。但按情理，我們通常是選先考試，后放暑假的。這個同學(xué)犯的錯誤與前面的班長所犯的錯誤一樣。他的原意是："我們放暑假前，期終考試了。"但因受中文句子的結(jié)構(gòu)影響，他把"前"用 "before"代替，代入句子，結(jié)果寫出不合情的句子。 他的句子應(yīng)寫為：
Before we had our summer holidays, we had the final examination. OR: We had the final examination before we had our summer holidays.
我們放暑假前，期終考試了。
留意 "before" 所引導(dǎo)的從句(Clause)是敘述后發(fā)生的事情。 "before"亦可用于句子中間，后面引導(dǎo)的從句(Clause)仍是用敘述后發(fā)生的事情。
(1) Before Tom leaves home for school, his mother checks his school bag. = Tom's mother checks his school bag before he leaves home for school.
湯姆離家上學(xué)前，他母親總為他檢查書包。
(2) Before I give my answer, I will ask you some questions. = I will ask you some questions before I give my answer.
