Stairs是一道樓梯;stair是“樓梯或階梯的一級”，此字是英國英語British English;在美國和蘇格蘭，指樓梯或扶梯一級時，用step，不用stair。例：

表達(dá)“五級樓梯”、“十級樓梯”等意時，人們一般說five steps和ten steps，以免與stairs(整個樓梯)混淆一起，故不說five stairs或ten stairs。順帶一提，梯子(ladder)的踏級稱為rung。
