Five million smartphones will be given to farmers in Pakistan in an effort to improve knowledge of modern farming techniques, an official has said.

The first phones would be delivered in October, said Punjab Information Technology Board chairman Dr Umar Saif.

Advice from experts would also be distributed via the devices.

"The farmers will receive free alerts about the use of pesticides for their yields," said Dr Saif, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan.

Large numbers of farmers in countries such as India and Kenya have also recently experimented with smartphone technology.

Hendrik Knoche at Denmark's Aalborg University was involved in a recent project to design a smartphone interface that could be used by farmers in India, even those with literacy problems.

"A lot of the information that farmers are really interested in is often not available online," he told the BBC, "such as whether a local dealer has good quality material or whether it's adulterated."

At the very least, Dr Knoche said, his experience suggested that even farmers new to the devices would soon pick up the basics of how to use them - and that that could benefit them in the future.

Google Fiber's plans to bring super-fast Internet speeds throughout the U.S. are hitting somestumbling blocks, according to recent reports.

Citing sources close to parent Alphabet, tech-industry news service The Information said highcosts of the current and a shortfall in subscribers led Alphabet CEO Larry Page to tell Fiberchief Craig Barratt last month to "halve the size of the Google Fiber team to 500 people."

Its internal target was to reach 5 million subscribers in five years of its start, but by the end of2014, it counted only 200,000 broadband subscribers, according to the report.

The company announced Fiber, which offers speeds of one gigabit a second, in 2010 andlaunched in Kansas City in 2012. Google has since expanded Fiber to seven cities, includingAtlanta, Nashville and Charlotte.

While demand has been strong, build-out has been slow, allowing Google's telecom rivals torace ahead.

Fiber delayed its rollout plans in two Silicon Valley cities to incorporate wireless alternatives, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

In a bid to speed up rollouts and make the cost more efficient, Google has been looking intousing wireless technology for its future Fiber rollouts.

Earlier this month the company filed with FCC for permission to use the 3.5Ghz band ofspectrum to test the technology in as many as 24 locations over the next 24 months.
