A special letter 一封特殊的信
Dear World:
親愛的世界：
My son starts school today.
我的兒子今天就要開始上學(xué)讀書了。
It's going to be strange and new to him for a while, and I wish you would sort of treat him gently.
一時(shí)之間，他會(huì)感覺陌生而又新鮮。我希望你能待他溫柔一些。
You see, up to now, he's been king of the roost.

He's been boss of the backyard.

I have always been around to repair his wounds, and to soothe his feelings.

This morning, he's going to walk down the front steps, wave his hand and start on his great adventure that will probably include wars and tragedy and sorrow.

To live his life in the world he has to live in will require faith and love and courage.

Teach him - but gently, if you can.

Teach him the wonders of books.

Give him quiet time to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun, and flowers on the green hill.

Teach him it is far more honorable to fail than to cheat.

Promise 永恒的承諾
In 1989 an 8.2 earthquake almost flattened America, killing over 30,000 people in less than four minutes. In the midst of utter devastation and chaos, a father left his wife safely at home and rushed to the school where his son was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.
1989年，一次8.2級(jí)的地震幾乎鏟平美國(guó)，在短短不到4分鐘的時(shí)間里，奪去了3萬多人的生命!在徹底的破壞與混亂之中，有位父親將他的妻子在家里安頓好后，跑到他兒子就讀的學(xué)校，而觸目所見，卻是被夷為平地的校園。
After the unforgettably initial shock, he remembered the promise he had made to his son: "No matter what, I’ll always be there for you!" And tears began to fill his eyes. As he looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school, it looked hopeless, but he kept remembering his commitment to his son.
看到這令人傷心的一幕，他想起了曾經(jīng)對(duì)兒子所作的承諾："不論發(fā)生什么事，我都會(huì)在你身邊。"至此，父親熱淚滿眶。目睹曾經(jīng)的學(xué)校成為了一堆瓦礫，真叫人絕望。但父親的腦中仍然牢記著他對(duì)兒子的諾言。
He began to direct his attention towards where he walked his son to class at school each morning. Remembering his son s classroom would be in the back right corner of the building; he rushed there and started digging through the ruins.
他開始努力回憶每天早上送兒子上學(xué)的必經(jīng)之路，終于記起兒子的教室應(yīng)該就在那幢建筑物后面，位于右邊的角落里，他跑到那兒，開始在碎石礫中挖掘，搜尋兒子的下落。
As he was digging, other helpless parents arrived, clutching their hearts, saying: "My son!" "My daughter!" Other well meaning parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying: "It s too late! They’re all dead! You can’t help! Go home! Come on, face reality, there s nothing you can do!"
當(dāng)這位父親正在挖掘時(shí)，其他束手無策的學(xué)生家長(zhǎng)趕到現(xiàn)場(chǎng)，揪心地叫著："我的兒子呀!" "我的女兒呀!"一些好意的家長(zhǎng)試圖把這位父親勸離現(xiàn)場(chǎng)，告訴他"一切都太遲了!"他們?nèi)懒?"這樣做沒用的"，"回去吧，這樣做只會(huì)使事情更糟"。
To each parent he responded with one line: "Are you going to help me now?" And then he continued to dig for his son, stone by stone. The fire chief showed up and tried to pull him off the school s ruins saying, "Fires are breaking out, explosions are happening everywhere. You’re in danger. We’ll take care of it. Go home." To which this loving, caring American father asked, "Are you going to help me now?"

The police came and said, "You’re angry, anxious and it s over. You’re endangering others. Go home. We’ll handle it!" To which he replied, "Are you going to help me now?" No one helped.Courageously he went on alone because he needed to know for himself: "Is my boy alive or is he dead?" He dug for eight hours...12 hours...24 hours...36 hours...then, in the 38th hour, he pulled back a large stone and heard his son s voice. He screamed his son s name, "ARMAND!" He heard back, "Dad!?! It s me, Dad! I told the other kids not to worry. I told them that if you were alive, you d save me and when you saved me, they d be saved. You promised, No matter what happens, I’ll always be there for you! You did it, Dad!" "What s going on in there? How is it?" the father asked.

"There are 14 of us left out of 33, Dad. We’re scared, hungry, thirsty and thankful you re here. When the building collapsed, it made a triangle, and it saved us."

"Come out, boy!"

Youth 青春
Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and suppleknees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.
青春不是年華，而是心境;青春不是桃面、丹唇、柔膝，而是深沉的意志，恢宏的想象，炙熱的戀情;青春是生命的深泉在涌流。
Youth means a tempera-mental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20.Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.
青春氣貫長(zhǎng)虹，勇銳蓋過怯弱，進(jìn)取壓倒茍安。如此銳氣，二十后生而有之，六旬男子則更多見。年歲有加，并非垂老，理想丟棄，方墮暮年。
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spring back to dust.
歲月悠悠，衰微只及肌膚;熱忱拋卻，頹廢必致靈魂。憂煩，惶恐，喪失自信，定使心靈扭曲，意氣如灰。
Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what's next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope,cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.
無論年屆花甲，擬或二八芳齡，心中皆有生命之歡樂，奇跡之誘惑，孩童般天真久盛不衰。人人心中皆有一臺(tái)天線，只要你從天上人間接受美好、希望、歡樂、勇氣和力量的信號(hào)，你就青春永駐，風(fēng)華常存。
When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catchwaves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.
一旦天線下降，銳氣便被冰雪覆蓋，玩世不恭、自暴自棄油然而生，即使年方二十，實(shí)已垂垂老矣;然則只要樹起天線，捕捉樂觀信號(hào)，你就有望在八十高齡告別塵寰時(shí)仍覺年輕。
