  01、歡迎來到資訊王

  Dave: Welcome to InfoKing. I'm Dave. Looks like you've 1) inherited Bob's 2) cubicle.

  戴夫: 歡迎來到資訊王。我是戴夫??磥砟阋呀?jīng)接管了鮑伯的辦公室隔間。

  Zina: I'm Zina Romero. Sales. Who was Bob?

  B: What do you hate most about working in an office? 你最恨在辦公室工作的哪一點(diǎn)。

  【get to 影響,左右】

  get to在對(duì)話中是指“影響,左右”,多半是指負(fù)面的情況:

  A:The pressure has been really getting to me lately. 我最近真的被壓力壓得喘不過氣來。

  B:Maybe you should take a vacation. 或許你該去度個(gè)假。

  get to的另一個(gè)常見用法是“抵達(dá)”,這個(gè)短語在問路時(shí)很好用,相信大家也都不陌生:

  A:How can I get to the train station? 我要怎么才能到火車站?

  B:It's around the corner and to the left. 它就在轉(zhuǎn)角那邊靠左側(cè)。

  get to還有一個(gè)常見用法,意思是“得以,才能夠”:

  A:How did you get to be a politician? 你是如何才得以當(dāng)政治人物的?

  B:Many years of hard work. 多年的苦功。

  02、你是怎么算薪水的?

  Zina: How do you get paid? 1) If you don't mind my asking.

  Dave: Not cash. But if our 2) launch goes well, my stock options will pay off, big time.

  A: We're launched a new website.

  我們推出了一個(gè)新網(wǎng)站。

  B: That's great. What's the address?

  太棒了。網(wǎng)址是什么?

  【big time 超級(jí),非?!?/p>

  big time是在口語中常??梢月牭降亩陶Z,用來強(qiáng)調(diào)句中程度的高,意即“超級(jí),非常”,可以當(dāng)做副詞用:

  A:I need to go to the bathroom, big time!

  我得要上廁所,超急的!

  B:There's a toilet over there. Why don't you go?

  那里就有廁所。你為什么不去?

  也可以當(dāng)做形容詞,寫做big-time:

  A:She is a big-time movie producer!

  她是個(gè)大牌的電影制片!

  B:Really? Why haven't I heard of her before then?

  真的?那怎么我以前從沒聽說過她?

  1) If you don't mind my asking. 若你不介意我問起的話。這是客氣的詢問句。要注意的是,mind 的后面要接動(dòng)名詞;而若提到是誰問的,則要用所有格。

  2) launch (n., v.) 事業(yè)登場,投入市場

  03、此話怎講?

  Zina: What do you mean? If he was a good programmer, he should have been 1) raking it in.

  吉娜: 此話怎講?若他是個(gè)好的程序設(shè)計(jì)師,他應(yīng)該早就發(fā)了。

  Dave: The boss wanted to pay Bob with 2) stock options. But Bob didn't want to play that game again.

  【W(wǎng)hat do you mean?這話怎講?】

  這是談話時(shí)較隨便的講法,照說應(yīng)該是What do you mean by that? 另一個(gè)類似句型是What does the word mean?這個(gè)字作何解釋?mean 在這兩個(gè)句型的“意思、意表”解。

  mean 也作“打算”解,須要注意的是后面只能接不定詞,不可接-ing式,例如:

  Paul means to go to Taipei next week.

  保羅打算下星期到臺(tái)北去。

  A: What do you mean by sayingJudy is leaving the country.?

  你說茱迪要出國是什么意思?

  B: Well, she means to accept a job offer in Singapore.

  她打算要接受新加坡的一個(gè)工作機(jī)會(huì)。

  1) rake in 發(fā)財(cái),大撈一筆

  2) stock option 股票選擇權(quán),認(rèn)股權(quán)

  3) start-up (n.) 開始(創(chuàng)業(yè),工作,動(dòng)工等)

  4) fold (v.) 關(guān)店,倒閉

  5) zip (n.) 零,烏有

  6) freelance (a.) 無約、自由工作的

  7) buck美元

  04、我會(huì)讓你發(fā)財(cái)

  Zina: Hi, boss. You wanted to see me?

  吉娜: 嗨,老板。你說要見我?

  Vince: Zina. Look, I know when I 1) hired you, I told you I'd pay you a salary. But I just can't.

  【look聽著】

  很奇怪,怎么英文的look會(huì)翻譯成中文的“聽著”?其實(shí)這正說明文化的差異。在英、美社會(huì)里,要對(duì)方在意你即將說的話,最普遍的語詞是look,而我們?cè)谕瑯忧闆r下卻說“聽著”。

  A:Look, I'll give you ten dollars if you sweep the room for me.

  聽著,如果你幫我掃房間,我就給你十塊錢。

  B:Sounds reasonable.

  聽起來蠻合理的。

  1) hire (v.) 雇用

  2) awkward (a.) 令人尷尬的的,感到尷尬的

  05、我要提供你認(rèn)股權(quán)

  Vince: I want to 1) offer you more InfoKing stock options.

  文斯: 我要提供你資訊王的認(rèn)股權(quán)。

  Zina: When you hired me, you knew you were going to be low on cash, didn't you?

  吉娜: 你在雇用我的當(dāng)時(shí),就知道你會(huì)缺現(xiàn)金,對(duì)吧?

  這里的work不是指“工作”,而是指“事物運(yùn)作的道理與規(guī)范”,類似于行規(guī)的概念:

  B:It's OK, I know how it works. You just don't like me.

  沒關(guān)系,我知道行規(guī)。你就是看不慣我。

  【give away 送掉】

  give away 這個(gè)短語看起來很簡單,不過有許多常用的意思,對(duì)話中所用到的give away 是指“贈(zèng)送”。

  A: Why did you give your bicycle away?

  你為何把你的腳踏車送掉了?

  B: It's too old. I want to get a new one anyway.

  那臺(tái)太老了。反正我要換新的。

  2) venture (n.) 具冒險(xiǎn)性的事業(yè)

  3) capitalist (n.) 出資者,金主,capital 是“資金”。

  4) profit (n.) 利潤

  5) increase (v.) 增加

  6) position (n.) 地位,此指“股權(quán)”。

  06、我可不便宜

  Zina: I'm not cheap.

  吉娜: 我可不便宜。

  Vince: I'm prepared to increase your 1) stake to three percent.

  文斯: 我準(zhǔn)備把你的股份增加至百分之三。

  Zina: I've sold more 2) subscriptions to InfoKing in one week than you 3) expected me to sell in a month.
