Blackpool Wants to Mimic Las Vegas

Many English seaside towns seem as if they are stuck in a time warp, in an era when families and caravans full of factory workers would converge on the shore for fun and frolics.

As buildings decay and holiday makers flock to warmer shores, resorts like Blackpool and Morecambe on the northwest coast are looking to refresh their image.

Blackpool council has drawn up radical plans to turn its stretch of coastline, known as the Golden Mile, into what some have called the new Las Vegas of Europe.

The town is keen to capitalize on a proposed deregulation of Britain's gambling laws.

"Blackpool needs to see major change if it is to turn the tide and create a prosperous future," said deputy council leader Eddie Collett.

The aim is to build five big casinos and create around 30,000 new jobs. The project is already underway but developers say it will take until 2020 to finish.

Council officials say the plan could generate around 437 million pounds a year and increase annual tourist visitors to around 15 million from 11 million now.

The glitz of Las Vegas feels a long way from Blackpool.

Its sandy beach is often strewn with litter and it is hard to find much better food than a burger.

Many residents acknowledge the resort is not looking its best but some worry that the casino plan could attract the wrong sort of clientele.

"There are enough alcoholics and gamblers anyway in Blackpool," said sweet-seller Pat Whitty, referring to a current craze for stag and hen night parties in the resort.

"Casinos will definitely scare families away," added Whitty. "Blackpool will lose its old seaside image."

Sydney Opera House

The Sydney Opera House is one of the most famous buildings in the world. It is considered to be one of the most recognizable images of the modern world although the building has been open for only about 30 years. The Sydney Opera House is as representative of Australia as the pyramids are of Egypt.

6,225 square meters of glass and 645 kilometers of electric cable were used to build the Opera House. It includes 1,000 rooms. It is 185 meters long and 120 meters wide. The building's roof sections weight about 15 tons. There are 1 million tiles on the roof. It provides guided tours to 200,000 people each year.

But do you know the Opera House with a roof was designed by a famous Danish architect, John Utzon? In the late 1950s the Australian Government established an appeal fund to finance for the construction of the Sydney Opera House, and conducted a competition for its desigh was chosen.

Utzon spent a few years reworking the design and it was 1961 before he had solved the problem of how to build the distinguishing feature - the sails of the roof. The venture experienced cost blowouts. In 1966 the situation reached crisis point and Utzon resigned from the project. The building was finally competed by others in 1973. Sydney Opera House was opened by Queen Elizabeth on 20th October 1973.

The Opera House reaches out into the harbour. Seen from the air or a ferry, the skyline of the Sydney Opera Hose, te blue water of the harbour and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, so beautiful.

The Indiana State Fair

Almost all states in America have a state fair. They last for one, two or three weeks. The Indiana state fair is one of the largest and oldest state fairs in the United States. It is held every summer. It started in 1852. Its goals were to educate, share ideas, and present Indiana's best products. The cost of a single ticket to enter the fair was 20 cents.

During the early 1930s, officials of the fair ruled that people could attend by paying with something other than money. For example, farmers brought a bag of grain in exchange for a ticket. With the passage of time, the fair has grown and changed a lot, but it is still one of the Indiana's most celebrated events.

People from all over Indiana and from many other states attend the fair. They can do many things at the fair. They can watch the judging of the priced cows, pigs and other animals. They can see sheep getting their wool cut and they can learn how that wool is made into clothing. They can watch cows giving birth. In fact, people can learn about animals they would never see except at the fair.

The fair provides a chance for the farming community to show its skills and farm products. For example, visitors might see the world's largest apple, or the tallest sunflower plant. Today, children and adults at the fair can play new computer games, or attend more traditional games of skill. They can watch performances put on by famous entertainers.

Experts say such fairs are important, because people need to remember that they are connected to the earth and its products and they depend on animals for many things.
