Telling the truth

There is a story of a thief who satisfied the material needs of his family by stealing money from unsuspecting travelers. When he realized that what he was doing was not ethical道德的,倫理的, he went to a holy man and asked for help. He told him that he did not know how to support his family without continuing to steal. Yet, he desperately拼命地,絕望地 wanted to change the course of his life.

The holy man agreed to help. He said, "I won't ask you to stop stealing. But I think it might help to take on a virtue美德,優(yōu)點(diǎn) that you can always hold on to堅(jiān)持,緊握 in your life."

The thief promised to always tell the truth, no matter what. After thanking him, he went on his way.

A few days later, the thief was caught stealing, red-handed當(dāng)場(chǎng),正在作案. During his trial, the king discovered the thief's commitment to truth. Appreciating this precious virtue, he appointed the thief as the treasurer of the kingdom. Soon, he discovered that just one virtue, telling the truth, helped him adopt many other virtues with relative ease. He led a respectable and virtuous life.

Free to Soar

One windy spring day, I observed young people having fun using the wind to fly their kites. Multicolored creations of varying shapes and sizes filled the skies like beautiful birds dartingand dancing. As the strong winds gusted against the kites, a string kept them in check.

Instead of blowing away with the wind, they arose against it to achieve great heights. They shook and pulled, but the restraining string and the cumbersome tail kept them in tow, facing upward and against the wind. As the kites struggled and kept them in tow, facing upward and against the wind. As the kites struggled and trembled against the string, they seemed to say," Let me go! Let me go! I want to be free!" they soared beautifully even as they fought therestriction of the string. Finally, one of the kites succeeded in breaking loose. "Free at last," it seemed to say. "Free to fly with the wind."

Yet freedom from restraint simply put it at the mercy of an unsympathetic breeze. It fluttered ungracefully to the ground and landed in a tangled mass of weeds and string against a dead bush. "Free at last", free to lie powerless in the dirt, to be blown helplessly along the ground, and to lodge lifeless against the first obstruction.

How much like kites we sometimes are. The heaven gives us adversity and restrictions, rules to follow from which we can grow and gain strength. Restraint is a necessary counterpart to the winds of opposition. Some of us tug at the rules so hard that we never soar to reach the heights we might have obtained. We keep part of the commandment and never rise high enough to get our tails off the ground.

Let us each rise to the great heights, recognizing that some of the restraints that we maychafe under are actually the steadying force that helps us ascend and achieve.

They shuddered with cold, and ran down the road to the bridge. There, warm, they started walking hand in hand.

A flush came into the sky. The waned moon, halfway down the west, sank intoinsignificance. On the shadowy land, things began to take life, and plants with great leaves became clear. They came to the beach. The long wastes of shore lay moaning under the dawn and the sea; the ocean was a flat dark strip with a white edge. Over the gloomy sea the sky was red. Quickly the fire spread among the clouds and scattered them. Crimson burned to orange, orange to dull gold, and in the golden glitter the sun rose. The sea became glistening, as if someone had gone along with a bucket and the light had spilled from it as she walked.

The breakers ran down the shore in long, hoarse strokes. Tiny seagulls, like little spray, wheeled above the line of surf. Their crying seemed larger than their bodies. Far away the coast reached, melt into the morning. The tussocky sand hills seemed to sink to a level with the beach. On this shore only they watched the sea and the rising sun, and heard the faint water and the sharp crying of the gulls.
