  Leisure Time

True to their reputation as leisureloving gourmets, the French spend more time sleeping and eating than anyone else among the world's wealthy nations, according to a study published on Monday.

The average French person sleeps almost nine hours every night, more than an hour longer than the average Japanese and Korean, who sleep the least in a survey of 18 members of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) .

Despite their siesta habit, Spaniards rank only third in the poll after Americans, who sleep more than 8.5 hours.

And while more and more French people grab a bite at fast-food chains these days or wolf down a sandwich at their desk, they still spend more than two hours a day eating.

That means their meals are twice as long as those of the average Mexican, who dedicates just over an hour a day to food, the OECD's "Society at a Glance" report on work, health and leisure in Asia, Europe and North and South America found.

The Japanese, Scrimping on sleep and burdened with long commutes and working hours, still manage to spend close to two hours a day eating and drinking, placing them third behind New Zealanders.

Despite the moderate amount of time Americans spend eating each day -about an hour and a quarter -U.S obesity rates are the highest in the 30 members of OECD.

The Japanese like to spend what remains of their scarce free time watching television or listening to the radio. This takes up 47 percent of leisure time in Japan.

Turks, on the other hand, spend more than a third of their leisure time entertaining friends.

Norwegians spend the most time at leisure, just over a quarter of their day, while at the low end, Mexicans spend just 16 percent of their time having fun.

The OECD has 30 members. The survey covers only the countries for which appropriate figures were available.

  Dream Will Come True

The first day of school our professor introduced a little old lady to us.

"Why are you in college at such a young age? " I asked later. She jokingly replied, I'm here tomeet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel."

"No, seriously," I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on thischallenge at her age. "I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting oneone! she told me.

We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave c1ass togetherand talked nonstop. I was always listening to this"time machine" as she shared her wisdom andexperience with me.

At the end of the semester we invited Rose to make a speech to our football team. I'll neverforget what she taught us. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her notecard on the floor. A little embarrassed she simply said, "I'm sorry. This whiskey is killing me! I'llnever get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know." As we laughed shecleared her throat and began:"We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old becausewe stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achievingsuccess. You have to laugh and find humor every day.

You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many peoplewalking around who are dead and don't even know it! There is a huge difference betweengrowing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year anddon't do one productive thing, you will tum twenty years old. Anybody can grow older. Thatdoesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity inchange. Have no regrets. The elderly u5uaUy don't have regrets for what we did, but rather forthings we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets."

At the year's end Rose finished the college degree. One week after graduation Rose diedpeacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral to honor thewonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be.

  The Warmth in Winter

Winter gives us the opportunity to stay inside and look outside, as we' re not called outdoorsto enjoy the warmth and sunshine. Snuggle up in the sofa, put a blanket over you, have a cupof hot cocoa, and enjoy the observations on this precious season...

Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand andfor a talk beside the fire: It is the time for home.

During the winter I am content, or try to think I am. There is a wonderful joy in leaving behindthe noisy city streets and starting out along the white road that leads across the hills. Witheach breath of the sharp, reviving air one seems to inhale new life. A peace as evident as thesunshine on the fields lakes possession of one' s inner being. The trivial cares are driven awayby the first sweep of wind that comes straight from the mountains. The intense silence thatbroods over the snow-bound land is a conscious blessing from the nature.

Sometimes our fate resembles a fruit tree in winter: Who would think that those brancheswould turn green again and blossom, but we hope it, we know it.
