L: Hello, Craig! Let me have a look at your pictures!

  C: OK, here you are.

L: Wow. They are really great. You are so skilled in taking pictures.

C: Thanks. These buildings are just beautiful in themselves. I like the gothic hall very much.

L: I guess this one is King’s College in Cambridge? I heard form Lucy that you went there last Weekend. How is your journey?

C: A little bit tired, but it,s paid off. How do you know that this is the King’s College?

L: Are you kidding me? This is the Cambridge’s landmark! But I have no idea why it was called the King’s College; does it have something to do with kings?

C: You’re right. King’s College was founded in 1441 by King Henry VI. His first design was modest, but by 1445 it was intended to be a magnificent display of royal patronage.

L: I heard that it has taken them 80 years to finish the building.

C: Really? It was a huge project. Let me show you another picture. See, this is the bronze statue of King Henry VI in the middle of the yard.

L: Having the king’s support, this college must have some privileges in the past. There is no wonder that buildings here are so splendid.

C: That is true. The college was used to be granted a remarkable series of feudal privileges, and all of this was supported by a substantial series of endowments from the King.

L: I heard that students in this college are more politically active than other colleges. That may have something to do with their traditions.

C: It has its own student unions both for undergraduates and for graduates. The student union has a long record of activism.

L: Their activities must have exerted great influence on the college and the university.

C: That’s for sure. Time Magazine published in 2000 a list of the most “influential and important” people of the twentieth century.

L: Are there any students or fellows from this college in the list?

C: That is what Vxn going to say. In a list of one hundred names, King’s was the only European institution that could claim two.

L: Where did you take this photo? Why there is only one small tree standing in the middle of the yard?

C: It is perhaps the world’s most famous apple tree.

L: Oh, I see. Is it Newton's apple tree?

C: Yes, but it is not the original one. It is said that this tree is the offspring of the apple tree which led Newton to have discovered the law of gravity.

L: That’s interesting. So, these were taken in the famous Trinity College which produced numerous famous people like Newton, Bacon, Byron and so on?

C: Yes, you’re right. This one was also taken in the New Court, which was built in Tudor-Gothic style.

  L: It’s beautiful!

C: And this is a view of the Wren Library.

L:I wish I could spend my college years in this kind library. It must be an enjoyment.

C: This one is St. Catherine’s. Its red brick buildings dating from the end of the seventeenth century, and its court, planted with elms, opening to the street.

L: Lovely. This is the first time I see the pictures of it since it is not as famous as the King’s,Trinity.

C: Actually, beside those buildings in colleges, there are many beautiful comers in Cambridge.
