Mr Ma, a famous mental doctor (心理醫(yī)生) from Beijing once said at an important meeting, "Now many young students can have problems with their minds. Some students become worried because they have to study very hard. Others have trouble getting on well with people around them like their parents and classmates. Parents and teachers should care more about this problem."

Then Mr Ma gave some examples. A middle school student from Xi'an was doing badly in his lessons. He thought his teachers and friends often laughed at him, and he became so nervous and worried that one night he left his home without telling his parents. Another student, a 14-year-old schoolgirl from Shanghai, was very afraid of exams. While she was reading the exam paper, she couldn't think of anything to write.

A recent report from a newspaper says about 18% of the young students in Shanghai have mental problems. They often feel worried and very unhappy. Unluckily, many of them won't go and ask for help. Some think they will look stupid if they go to see a doctor. Others won't talk about their secrets.

At the end of the meeting, Mr Ma gave some good ideas to young people:

I had to make a safe place to live. I could not stay where I was because there was no fresh water there. I found a good piece of flat ground up a hill, with a cliff(峭壁)on one side and a good view of the sea. I put up my tent near the cliff. I cut some wood and made a strong fence(柵欄)around the area. The fence did not have a gate or door. I used a ladder to get over it to reach my tent and then pulled the ladder inside the fence. Nobody else could come in. I was safe. I brought all my things inside the fence. It took a long time to do this, sometimes in heavy rain.

I made a kind of cave in the cliff behind me, and I put a lot of things there to keep them dry. During one storm, I was afraid that lightning would hit my gunpowder(火藥),and I would lose it all. After the storm, I divided the gunpowder into small piles and put them in different places. Every day, I went out with my gun to shoot something that I could cook and eat. I found that there were goats on the island, and I soon shot one.

Every day, I made a mark on a piece of wood with a n axe(斧子). This way, I knew how long I had been on the island. I had some paper and ink from the ship, and I made notes about my new life. It was a terrible, lonely life, but at least I was alive, and I had saved many useful things from the ship, which would help to keep me alive.

If you go to a fast food restaurant, you will probably see a lot of teenagers. Today, many teenagers are overweight, and the reason of this is because of their bad eating habits. Most teenagers love fast food with a lot of fat, oil, salt and sugar. People often call this kind of food “junk food”.

  Shaking Hands

Shaking Hands has been done since at least the second century B.C. It’s a symbol of trust. Now we usually shake the right hands. But in the old time, people also shook left hands. The world record for handshakes is held by a man from New Jersey, who shook 11,000 hands in a single day.

  Thumbs (拇指) Up

The Thumbs Up sign is thought to come from a match in Rome. There people decided whether the fighter would live or die by thumbs up or thumbs down. Rochambeau, or rock, paper, scissors is played all over the world to deal with something difficult. In Indonesia, it is earwig (蜈蚣), human, and elephant. The earwig drives the elephant mad. The human killed the earwig, and the elephant killed the human. If you know why it is called Rochambeau, please let me know. It’s still a mystery (謎).

Tim Berners-Lee is not the most famous inventor in the world. However, his invention has changed our lives.

He was born in London, England in 1955. When he was a small boy, Tim was interested in playing with electrical things. He studied science at Oxford University. He made his first computer from an old television at the age of 21.

Tim started working on early computers. At that time, they were much bigger than now. He worked in England then Switzerland. Tim was really interested in two things, computers and how the brain works. How could the brain connect so many facts so quickly? He had to work with people all over the world. They shared information about computers. It was hard to manage all the information. He answered the same questions again and again. It took a lot of time. It was even difficult for computers in the same office in Switzerland to share information. Tim also forgot things easily. Could a computer work like a brain? Could it “talk” to other computers?

There was an Internet already but it was difficult to use. In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web(WWW)all by himself. This had a special language that helped computers talk to each other on the Internet. When people wanted to share information with others, they used the World Wide Web. The Internet grew quickly after that.

Tim Berners-Lee doesn’t think he did anything special. He says that all of the ideas about the Internet were already there. All he did was to put them together. He says that many other people worked together to make the Internet what it is today.

Most inventors want to become rich. But Tim gave away the World Wide Web for nothing. He now works in America. He helps people share technology and wants the Internet to be free for everyone to use. Maybe he is the most important but least famous inventor in the world today!

  B. He is not famous because he is not rich.

  C. He did nothing special but make people a good life.

  D. He has made great achievements in memory research

  D

I have tried to write a ghost story that won't make you unhappy with yourselves, with each other, with the seasons, or with me. I hope it haunts your houses pleasantly.

One Christmas Eve, old Scrooge and Bob were working busily in his office. It was a cold, foggy day. The fog was so thick that the houses opposite were like ghosts. It was only three o'clock in the afternoon, but it was already quite dark.

"Merry Christmas, Uncle! God bless you!" cried a happy voice. It was Scrooge's nephew.

  "Bah!" said Scrooge. "Humbug (騙人的話)."

"Christmas is a humbug! Surely you don't mean that, Uncle." said his nephew.

"I do," said Scrooge. "Merry Christmas! What reason have you got to be merry? You are poor."

"OK, then," replied the nephew cheerfully. " What reason have you got to be sad? You are rich. Don't be angry, Uncle!" said his nephew.

"What else can I be?" answered the uncle, "I live in a world of fools! Merry Christmas! What's Christmas time to you? It's a time for paying bills without money. It's a time for finding yourself a year older, but not richer. Everyone who goes around saying 'Merry Christmas 'should have his tongue cut out. Yes, he should!"

"Uncle! Please don't say that!"said the nephew. "I've always thought of Christmas time as a good time, a kind, and a charitable, happy time. And so, Uncle, Christmas has never put any gold or silver in my pocket, but I think it has done me good. And it will do me good. And I say, God bless it!"

Bob, standing in the corner of the room, applauded (鼓掌). He realized his mistake very soon, and went quickly back to his work, but Scrooge had heard him.

"One more sound from you, Bob Cratchit," said Scrooge, "and you'll celebrate Christmas by losing your job!"

"Don't be angry with him, Uncle. Come and have dinner with us tomorrow."

  "No." said Scrooge.

"I'm sorry you don't want to celebrate Christmas. But I do. So a Merry Christmas, Uncle !"

  "Good afternoon!" said Scrooge.

"And a Happy New Year!" said his nephew.

  "Good afternoon!" said Scrooge again.

His nephew left the room. He stopped to wish Bob a Merry Christmas. And Bob replied, "A Merry Christmas to you. too."

These days shared bikes are becoming the center of attention in my WeChat friend circle. Many of my friends are sharing photos of themselves riding bikes, especially during the weekend in natural parks, and I can see people logging in (登錄) and out of shared bike apps.

I’m very happy that there are shared bikes on the road. They have saved us a lot of time during special situations, and on beautiful, clear days, people enjoy riding them outside the city.

I tried shared bikes last week, and I didn’t like them very much. I think the first shared bikes without baskets are designed for athletes. They are very hard to ride, and the seats are not comfortable. It makes me wonder whether people really like riding shared bikes or are just saying this to agree with others.

A friend secretly told me she tried the bikes to fit in. She doesn’t like bikes and finds Beijing’s roads too hard for bike riding. But recently, the only way to hang out with her friends is riding out of town together. To join in social activities, she had to pick up bike riding again.

Another friend admitted that he started talking about and sharing photos on shared bikes in order just to appear modern and fashionable to friends. He started paying attention when shared bikes first came into use.

These views will give me something new to think about when I ride these bikes again.

  55. What does the writer himself think of shared bikes?

  A. They are very difficult to ride. B. Their seats are comfortable.

  C. Athletes like shared bikes. D. They can save us a lot of money.

  56. The underlined word “admitted” may mean _______________ in the passage.

  A. told a lie B. told the truth C. kept a promise D. kept a secret

57 Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

  A. It’s quite simple to use shared bikes at special time.

  B. Some people only appear to be interested in shared bikes.

  C. The writer likes the bikes without baskets because they are for athletes.

  D. Some people like to share photos riding bikes because they want to agree with others.

  C

When you cough or sneeze, you’d better turn your head away from others and cover your mouth with the full part of your hand. And then, you should say, “Excuse me.”

This seems so simple, but it is surprising how many kids have never been told to do this. Actually, I notice adults all the time who cough and sneeze in public without placing a hand over the mouth. One important thing I point out to the kids is that after they sneeze or cough on their hands, they should wash their hands as soon as possible. If not, they will be passing those germs (細(xì)菌) along to everything and everyone they touch.

If you come to a door and someone is following you, hold the door. If the door opens by pulling, pull it open, stand to the side, and allow the other person to pass through first, then you can walk through. If the door opens by pushing, hold the door after you pass through.

After a few weeks of seeing kids try to get through doors in the school and watching them enter restaurants as the door hit other people, I knew I had to discuss the problem with my students. Teaching them small acts of kindness, such as letting someone else go through a door first as they hold it open, may seem unimportant, but it can go along way toward helping students realize how to be polite and thank others. Once they’ve been told, they’re halfway there.

When we have to go up moving stairs, we will stand to the right. That will give others who are in a hurry a choice of walking up the left-hand side of the moving stairs. When we are going to enter a lift, the underground, or a doorway, we will wait for others to exit before we enter.

After college when I moved to London, I was surprised at how polite everyone was in the subways. I was even more touched when I traveled to Japan. In both places, people made efforts to make way for others. On moving stairs, everyone stood to the right and walked to the left. On lifts, everyone would stand over to the side and allow others to exit before they would begin to enter.

  58. When you cough or sneeze, you should ________.

  A. touch everything B. cover your mouth

  C. point out to the kids D. pass the germs to others

  59. If you come to a door and someone is following you, you’d better _______.

  A. hold the door B. pass through C. close the door D. stand to the side

  60. Why should we stand to the right of moving stairs?

  A. Because it’s dangerous to stand to the left. B. Because it’s a traffic rule which we must follow.

  C. Because we must wait for others to move first.

  D. Because we should make way for people in a hurry.

  61. From the passage we can know the writer is a ________.

  A. doctor B. traveler C. parent D. teacher

  62. A. The passage is mainly about ______.

  A. the rules of acts in public B. the ways of communication

  C. the problems of meeting people D. the knowledge of social life

  D

Many people think that keeping a diary is something that teenage girls do. It’s seen as a place to write down secrets, things you don’t want anyone else to know. The stereotype (模式化觀念) is that only women keep diaries. In fact, keeping a diary is a very old tradition. It can be useful for many different types of people. Many famous people have kept diaries. Many powerful people have kept diaries. Some of these people include famous writers and presidents.

Keeping a diary is said to have health advantages. Studies show that keeping a diary, that is, writing out thoughts daily, can reduce asthma symptoms (哮喘癥狀).

Writing uses your left brain, which is thoughtful and organized. While your left brain is busy, your right brain is free to create and feel. This allows you to use all of your brain power to better understand yourself, others, and the world around you.

The key to successful diary keeping is not stopping any thoughts from coming through. This even means allowing thoughts that influence you to come out in your writing. It helps make your feelings clearer, and is especially useful if a person is faced with a hard decision. Sometimes just writing down the ideas you agree and disagree helps you better understand a problem. You begin to see a problem from different ways. This is helpful if you don’t agree with others.

  63. What does the word “it” in Paragraph 4 mean?

  A. Keeping away from illness. B. Using your right brain to create.

  C. Stopping some thoughts coming through. D. Allowing thoughts to come out in your diary.

  64. According to the passage, keeping diaries can help ______.

  A. get along with others B. understand things better

  C. know more about the old tradition D. become famous in the future

  65. What is the main idea of the passage?

  A. The advantages of keeping diaries. B. Keeping a diary with your left brain.

  C. The ways of keeping a diary successfully. D. The reasons girls like keeping diaries.

We brush our teeth every day but few people know how well we’re brushing. Today, a French company has introduced an electric toothbrush, which can work wirelessly(無(wú)線地) with a smart phone. It’s called the Kolibree toothbrush. It has different models, and will cost from $99 to $200.

Users download an app and connect via Bluetooth, and the Kolibree will record 1) the time you spent brushing teeth, 2) whether all areas of your mouth are reached, 3) whether you brush up and down instead of just side to side. Then it will send the information to a mobile phone via Bluetooth, telling you whether you have brushed in a proper way. The Kolibree app records your progress and scores your brushing way to help you improve brushing habits.

The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other apps on your phone, so developers could create a game controlled by your toothbrush. That would be very interesting.

The Kolibree toothbrush was invented by Thomas Serval. He says the idea of inventing it came from his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They always answered “yes”, but Thomas used to find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided that a kind of brush was needed to tell him how well they brushed their teeth.

Thomas says that one day, it’ll be possible to use a brushing unit with a camera. The camera can even examine holes in your teeth while you brush.
