I have always enjoyed studying Maths, Physics and Chemistry, and I would like the opportunity to continue this study. Chemical Engineering appeals to me because of the challenges involved in the application of scientific theory to practical, real world problems such as how to deal with nuclear waste. I particularly look forward to studying fluid dynamics as I was introduced to this during the Engineering Education Scheme (EES). I am aware that in today’s world chemical engineering has an increasingly important role across a wide range of industries from pharmaceuticals to petrochemicals. The broad range of career paths, and the opportunity to contribute to society through technological innovation, is for me, one of the main attractions of chemical engineering.

I have applied to take part in the Year In Industry scheme during which I hope to gain practical experience, as well as greater maturity enabling me to go into my degree course with improved skills and broader experience. I also hope to study e-learning courses on project management and presentation skills run by the IChemE. In Year 12 I took part in the EES, which improved my understanding and skills in team working, time management, and report writing, as well as visual and oral presentation. Throughout the course of the project the team had to frequently correspond with mentors in industry and academia and this experience has broadened my appreciation of practice and application in a real life situation. In July I attended a week-long ‘Into Engineering’ seminar run by REACT Engineering. Working in two teams, we were given a design exercise based upon a typical decommissioning project. I also attended a Headstart course at Newcastle University, which I thoroughly enjoyed. One of the main activities was to design, manufacture and test a small crane. I found both of these experiences very challenging, as we were given only limited time so we had to prioritise our tasks and carefully plan our work.

This year a fellow student and I were awarded ?500 by the European Scholarship Prize to fund a visit to Prague to do research for our A-level History coursework. I gained an understanding of the city’s culture and history and further developed my independence. During the summer I represented my school on a Connexions review of a government white paper on 14-19 education. I gained an insight into the government’s proposals and learned a lot about working with different groups of people. Last year I was part of the editorial team for the school magazine. I wrote a number of articles and I was responsible for ensuring that staff contributions were ready for the deadline. I also enjoy participating in a range of sports and have represented the school at football and cricket, which has further enhanced my team working skills.

In my spare time I am working towards my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. In September I completed a 4-day expedition in the Lake District, which tested my endurance but gave me a great sense of achievement. As part of the award I have been helping at the local youth café once a week, which I am really enjoying as it gives me the chance to meet new people. I also enjoy reading, particularly books on physics and Russian history. I am really interested in computers and I am currently trying to configure a Linux based file and print server for my home network.

一、美國(guó)大學(xué)留學(xué)住宿申請(qǐng)

確認(rèn)就讀院校并繳納定金2-3個(gè)工作日之后，同學(xué)們會(huì)收到學(xué)校發(fā)來(lái)的郵件。該郵件將明確指導(dǎo)學(xué)生如何開(kāi)展下一步工作，其中便包括學(xué)校宿舍的申請(qǐng)。請(qǐng)大家注意，即便美國(guó)大學(xué)宿舍沒(méi)有明確的的截止日期，大家還是要盡早申請(qǐng)。絕大多數(shù)學(xué)校采取firstcome,firstserve的制度，即早到早得。

美國(guó)大學(xué)宿舍的申請(qǐng)一般在查錄取狀態(tài)的系統(tǒng)或另外一個(gè)新系統(tǒng)里操作。宿舍申請(qǐng)要填以下幾部分的內(nèi)容：

(1)個(gè)人信息(Personal Information)

學(xué)生信息，緊急聯(lián)系人信息，美國(guó)聯(lián)系人信息等

(2)住宿合同/協(xié)議(Housing Contract)

長(zhǎng)篇大論，主要是針對(duì)校內(nèi)住宿的要求、規(guī)定、條件等等

(3)宿舍信息(Housing)

對(duì)校內(nèi)的所有宿舍樓信息的介紹和限定，劃分依據(jù)：年級(jí)、性別等。由此再進(jìn)一步細(xì)分：房型(公寓或宿舍，幾人間)、樓層、設(shè)施、學(xué)習(xí)區(qū)域等。同學(xué)們可參考以上選擇自己意向的宿舍，并根據(jù)喜好程度進(jìn)行排列。

(4)飲食計(jì)劃(Meal Plan)

在校內(nèi)住宿，一般都要求學(xué)生選擇配餐。一般分為：固定餐和不固定餐。固定餐的價(jià)格偏低，一般是自助餐的形式;不固定餐可選性強(qiáng)，但價(jià)格較高。申請(qǐng)者也可以選擇中間的部分固定+部分不固定餐。

(5)個(gè)人調(diào)查(Profile)

主要目的是根據(jù)申請(qǐng)者的類(lèi)型，匹配合適的室友。調(diào)查內(nèi)容：圍繞申請(qǐng)者的興趣愛(ài)好、生活習(xí)慣、學(xué)習(xí)習(xí)慣等，呈現(xiàn)相應(yīng)的問(wèn)題。

(6)選擇室友(Roommate)

分為兩種：已知和未知。如果是已知室友，可以在選擇室友部分，填寫(xiě)對(duì)方的個(gè)人信息，并通過(guò)驗(yàn)證、如果是未知室友，那么室友就會(huì)根據(jù)以上第5點(diǎn)(Profile)進(jìn)行系統(tǒng)匹配。契合度越高，越有可能成為未來(lái)的室友。系統(tǒng)自動(dòng)呈現(xiàn)出來(lái)的室友，也包括其個(gè)人信息。因此申請(qǐng)者可通過(guò)查看對(duì)方信息，請(qǐng)求對(duì)方添加自己成為彼此的室友。

(7)住宿定金(Housing Deposit)

如果要求提前繳納住宿定金，那么這筆費(fèi)用只是預(yù)交的定金而非全額的住宿費(fèi)，通常費(fèi)用在0-0不等。全額的住宿費(fèi)有的大學(xué)會(huì)要求赴美前交清，而有的大學(xué)則要求入學(xué)后再交。

(8)申請(qǐng)成功

申請(qǐng)完成之后，會(huì)出現(xiàn)最后的確認(rèn)頁(yè)面，可能會(huì)提醒宿舍分配時(shí)間和開(kāi)放時(shí)間，建議保存?zhèn)錂n。

三、美國(guó)大學(xué)住宿須知

(1)申請(qǐng)截止日期

一些學(xué)校住宿名額有限，并不能保證所有提出住宿申請(qǐng)的學(xué)生都能獲準(zhǔn)，大多數(shù)學(xué)校對(duì)于住宿名額實(shí)行「先到先得」的原則。因此越早申請(qǐng)住宿，分配到心儀的宿舍的幾率就越大。

(2)宿舍分配

宿舍和室友的分配一般是通過(guò)郵件的方式告知學(xué)生。學(xué)生可以提前了解，并與未來(lái)的室友取得聯(lián)系。

(3)宿舍開(kāi)放時(shí)間

可以通過(guò)郵件、重要日期、orientation等方式查看。如果早于宿舍開(kāi)放之前到校，那么需要提前確定臨時(shí)住宿(或酒店)，直到宿舍開(kāi)放日才能入住宿舍。

(4)管理人員

住宿都是由專(zhuān)門(mén)的宿舍管理員來(lái)管理，因此有任何宿舍方面的疑問(wèn)和需求，都可以尋求舍管。

(5)特別注意

宿舍的規(guī)章制度絕對(duì)不要去輕易違反。如禁煙區(qū)就不能吸煙，一旦被發(fā)現(xiàn)，就是警告處分。

如果房間內(nèi)有單獨(dú)的廚房，建議不要烹飪油煙太大的菜肴，雖然有抽煙機(jī)，但是如果油煙過(guò)大，很可能引起警報(bào)器鳴響，擾亂集體秩序。

如果室友是外國(guó)人，盡量可能做到兩點(diǎn)：

求同存異。尊重對(duì)方的習(xí)俗和觀念，在認(rèn)識(shí)熟悉之后，也要保持私密空間。

潔身自好。不亂吃亂用對(duì)方的物品，尤其是話(huà)不能亂說(shuō)，玩笑不能亂開(kāi)。

不同階段留學(xué)美國(guó)語(yǔ)言要求

1、高中階段

美國(guó)高中留學(xué)申請(qǐng)中常用的語(yǔ)言成績(jī)有SLEP，TOEFL Junior，TOEFL。要注意TOEFL Junior可作為8年級(jí)學(xué)生的入學(xué)申請(qǐng)，但9年級(jí)10年級(jí)，仍需要托福成績(jī)。

托普仕一般建議SLEP55分以上，TOEFL80以上。

2、本科階段

美國(guó)本科對(duì)于語(yǔ)言要求比較高，申請(qǐng)本科語(yǔ)言要求托福至少79分或雅思6.0分以上。通常來(lái)說(shuō)：

申請(qǐng)前30大學(xué)：托福至少100分，雅思至少7分

申請(qǐng)50-30名大學(xué)：托福90或以上，雅思6.5或以上

申請(qǐng)100-50名大學(xué)：托福成績(jī)?yōu)?9分以上，雅思成績(jī)?yōu)?分以上。

需要注意的是，相當(dāng)多的美國(guó)本科高?？梢韵?qū)W生發(fā)出有條件的錄取通知書(shū)。也就是說(shuō)，學(xué)生可以在本科開(kāi)學(xué)前閱讀一段時(shí)間的語(yǔ)言課程，然后再學(xué)習(xí)該課程。至于語(yǔ)言課程的長(zhǎng)度，則取決于學(xué)生的學(xué)習(xí)情況。

3、研究生階段

對(duì)大多數(shù)專(zhuān)業(yè)來(lái)說(shuō)，托福要求低的學(xué)校的最低分一般是79分或80分。大多數(shù)要求很高的學(xué)校的最低分?jǐn)?shù)為100分，少數(shù)學(xué)校的分?jǐn)?shù)要求高于100分，比如哥倫比亞大學(xué)的傳媒專(zhuān)業(yè)。如果能拿到100多所，學(xué)校的基本選擇不會(huì)受到托福的阻礙。如果其他條件好，應(yīng)用效果會(huì)更好。文科專(zhuān)業(yè)對(duì)托福的要求普遍較高，如傳媒等專(zhuān)業(yè)。不僅前50名的學(xué)校，而且許多50至100名的學(xué)校要求托福成績(jī)?yōu)?00分。

雅思的話(huà)也可以接受，在美國(guó)排名前50的大學(xué)中，無(wú)論是本科生還是研究生對(duì)雅思成績(jī)都有很高的要求，雅思一般至少需要達(dá)到7分。如果你想申請(qǐng)商學(xué)院(BNP Paribas)和法學(xué)院(laws chool)前50名的大學(xué)，以及傳媒專(zhuān)業(yè)的研究生，你至少需要獲得7.5分的雅思成績(jī)。申請(qǐng)美國(guó)普通大學(xué)至少需要雅思6.0分和研究生6.5分。盡管雅思已經(jīng)得到了大量美國(guó)大學(xué)的認(rèn)可，但美國(guó)大學(xué)提出的雅思成績(jī)卻相對(duì)苛刻，一般都在7.0分以上，有的甚至需要達(dá)到7.5分。
