Growing up in one of the poorest, most crime-ridden(犯罪猖獗的) communities on the south side of Atlanta, US, being raised by a single mother who didn't finish 3rd grade, living each day on food stamps(食物票券) and attending what the media called "the most dysfunctional(功能失常的) public school district," not many people expected much of me, so I had to expect something of myself.
On my 13th birthday, I bought a poster of Harvard to hang in my room. Being atHarvard became what I dreamt about: I saw myself attending class in Sanders Theater, studying in Widener Library and eating in Annenberg Hall. Even when my electricity was
cut off and I woke up at 5:30 a.m. to pitch blackness, I knew that my poster of Harvard wasstill hanging only two feet away from me. I'd begin my day by asking myself these twoquestions, "What do I want in my life?" and "Are the things I am doing today going to getme closer to that life?"
Reminding myself of my goal each day made it easy to say no to the same choices Isaw my peers making, because those paths wouldn't have gotten me closer to my goal. Ifound that even poverty could not take away my power to decide what I choose to do with
my day. Asking myself those questions gave me the courage to cold email about 50 Harvard students so I could ask for feedback(反饋) on my application essays; it gave me the energy to study just one more hour on my SATs when my friends were asleep; and it gave me the determination to submit(提交) just one more scholarship application when 180 0thers had already turned me down.
On March 3 lst, 2011, an email arrived from Harvard. The first word was "Congratulations! "A month later, Harvard flew me up to visit the campus where for the first time I got to seeinside Sanders Theater, tour Widener Library and eat dinner in Annenberg Hall.
Who you are today is the result of the decisions you made yesterday, and who you willbe tomorrow will be the result of the choices you make today. Who do you want to betomorrow?

Cellphone use and texting are increasingly common, especially among teenagers. Many students think that multitasking(同時(shí)做多件事) has no effect on how they perform in school, says Colter Norick, 17. So the Montana teenager and his 16-year-old brother Colindecided to test that notion.
They invited 47 classmates at ColumbiaFallsHigh School to take part in a two-phaseexperiment. The goal was to measure how well these students understood written material. Each participants had to read a paragraph or two about a certain topic, then answer aquestion about it.
In the first phase, the teenager participants had 15 minutes to digest and then answerquestions about six reading exercises. Throughout this testing, the volunteers encountered nodistractions.
A little later, Colter and Colin had their participants tackle a new set of readings. Thistime, the brothers used a computer program to send texts to the volunteers' cellphonesevery 90 seconds. In each text, fictional character named "Bob" asked questions thatrequired a reply. One example: What's your favorite type of music?
Results were enlightening, the Norick brothers found. In theory, volunteers should havescored better, not worse, on the second test because it was slightly easier. In fact, theparticipants scored 9 percent worse overall when distracted by incoming texts asking forsome response. Only a few students scored as well when replying to text as they did whenundistracted. But importantly, Colter and Colin say, nobody performed better during thetexting phase.
Boys and girls scored equally poorly while texting, the brothers note. Older volunteersdidn't do any better than younger ones. And it didn't matter if a student thought he or shewas good at multitasking. On average, the brothers found that even students who wereconfident of their abilities did just as poorly while texting. Oddly, even though the studentsremembered less of what they read while texting, most of them answered questions in Bob'stexts perfectly.
"Our teachers were very happy to see these results," says Colter. The teenagers' newdata strongly support their teachers' claim that texting while studying is a seriousdistraction.
32. What is the main purpose of the article?
A. To teach the reader how to multitask effectively.
B. To advise people not to use cellphones when multitasking.
C. To report on a study about how cellphone use affects academic performance.
D. To analyze why cellphone use would cause problems for teenagers who multitask.
33. In the second part of their experiment, the Norick brothers
A. collected participants' opinions on their favorite type of music
B. made participants finish six reading exercises and then tested their understanding
C. used a computer program to distract participants from their reading
D. asked participants to send texts to Bob's cellphone every 90 seconds
34. How did the Norick brothers conduct their experiments?
A. They invited their teachers to help design their experiments.
B. They invited students across the US to participate in their experiments.
C. They tested the participants' writing skills before the experiments.
D. They compared the results of the two parts of an experiment to draw a conclusion.
35. We can infer from the last two paragraphs that____.
A. male students are more easily distracted by texting than female ones
B. texting is a lesser distraction for senior students than younger ones
C. students with better academic performance are less affected by texting
D. texting distracts students regardless of their gender, age or academic performance

Life in the comfort zone is easy. You simply follow a routine and you can predict the consequences. Outside of the comfort zone, your assumptions are challenged. The idea of doing the same thing over and over without question is discouraged.
You get to experience more.
38 When you look back on your life, all of the really amazing things are becauseof a new experience you had. All of those vacations you took and all of the people you methave taught you more than you ever learned in school. These experiences now make up whoyou are today.
You'll be more flexible and adaptable.
Without doubt, change makes you more flexible and adaptable. You learn to deal withthings in a way that seems foreign but acceptable and achievable. 39 You begin to thrive(茁壯成長(zhǎng))in new situations because you have proven to yourself that you can, not only handle change, but flourish.
You have more fun.
When you are open to change, you are open to saying YES to more. You are open tomore experiences and opportunities. 40_ ___When you add all of these things together, you are going to have a more colorful life and you'll have a ton of fun figuring it all out along the way-there's no doubt about it.
A. You are pushed out of your comfort zone.
B. Experience is waiting for you at the doorstep.
C. You have the opportunity to meet more people too.
D. Whether the change is good or bad for you, it does happen.
E. We also know how challenging it can be to go through change.
F. Then you'll be more confident when in the next uncomfortable situation.

Dear Mike,
I’m sorry to tell you that I’ve lost your book that I borrowed from you. Now I’m expressing my deepest apology for my carelessness.
Actually, I put the book in my schoolbag after we met at school yesterday. But to my sorrow, it was stolen on my way home. I tried to get it back but failed. How angry and guilty I felt!
This morning, I went to buy the same book in some bookstores but it was very expensive. However, I promise that I’ll tighten my belt these days to get you a completely new one by the end of this month. Please forgive me again and accept my sincere apology.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
