  First day at college

  You should say:

  Name of college and course

  What difficulties did you encounter?

How did you feel in the end?

I had taken admission in the Business marketing course at Fansawe College and I was all set to go to the college. My first day at college was very tough. I knew nothing about the city so when I sat on the bus to go to my college I reached the wrong place. I reached my college after 3 hours and I missed my classes.

I was an international student so I had to report to the International office. The place was cramped with international students who were trying to get information about their classes and courses. I had to wait for a long time and finally my turn came. I am not saying that the college staff was not helpful; it is just that anxiety was creating more confusion as I was going through this process for the first time.

You would not believe that I was not even able to find my class for 2 hours and then I realized that my class was just near the international office. A lot of weird and stupid things were happening on that day, but some good things also happened in the end.

University - the best days of my life! I made lots of friends in my student dorm, went to greatparties, joined the debating society… and, well, I did some work too - but I must confess my lecturerswere verypatient with my tardiness.

It's easy to look back at our university days through rose-tinted spectaclesbut the truth is that when we first arrived on campus, mostof us were out of our comfort zone.

In fact, a survey of students at Imperial College London has revealed that 3 out of 4 students experiencehigh levels of stress, or a mental healthcondition, during their time at college. The survey, completed by over a thousand students, also found that 70% of those that experiencestress do so at least once a week, and 9% of students feel stressed constantly.

Kirsty, a student at Exeter University, didn't enjoy her first days in college. She says: "When I first got to university I don't think I'd realized that I'd forgotten how to make friends. I'd been with the same school friends for seven years, and so I was trying tobalancesocialsuccesswith academicsuccesswhilst learning howto look aftermyselfat quite a young age."

Dr Ruth Caleb of the counselling serviceat Brunel University in London has some tips that should make life easier for students before they set off for university. She says: "Certain things that I think it would be veryhelpful for students tohave put in place are an ability to do the practical things of life – to do the washing, to do the cleaning and so on – being able to cook. Budgetingis extremely important in university life." And Caleb adds: "You should learn how to spend time on your own comfortably."

Igraduatedand learnt how to take care of myself the hard way. I hope that new students these days remember to acquire some life skillsbefore they make the big jump.

How do you like university life? Which aspect of university life do you find most interesting (stimulating /challenging /exciting /enjoyable)?

With the expectation of the university, I came to Xinyang Normal University. I love this university at the sight of her, and I think the university life is colorful, stimulating, exciting, enjoyable, interesting, meaningful, and so on. Most important of all, I find college English class is most exciting for me.

First of all, college English class is student-centered and only speaking English. In middle and high schools, English classes were teacher-centered and bi-lingual, English teachers explained English grammars and new words in Chinese from the beginning to the end of each class, and we had little chance to speak English even in class. However, here English teachers give speeches in English, and we students are required to answer some questions, discuss some topics, and exchange our ideas, etc. only in English in class. I have to practice my spoken English as often as possible, day after day, now I find I can state my opinions clearly in spoken English in public. How pride I feel!

Secondly, college English class is more interesting and full of activities, such as role-playing, English competitions about telling stories, jokes or tongue twisting. Students are active to take part in all of these class activities to show their abilities and develop their hobbies. We come to class not only for knowledge but also for fun. How happy I am!

In all, college English class is completely different from those in middle and high schools, it’s so exciting and I do love it. I bet I will improve my English and achieve more here.

  1. What do you do in your spare time?

  2. When do you spend time with your family?

  3. What do you usually do on weekends?

  4. What did you do last weekends?

  5. What do other people in your hometown (or, in your country) usually do on weekends?

  6. What are you going to do next weekend?

  7. Do you think it is important to make the most of your weekend?

What do you do in your spare time?

What do you usually do on weekends?

What did you do last weekends?

What are you going to do next weekend?

What do other people in your hometown (or, in your country) usually do on weekends?

  attend the after-school class

do homework = finish the assignments

  hardly have time for fun

  hit the gym to workout

  go to a movie

  stay out late

  being a coach potato

  watch TV

  clean the house

  have a short trip

  self-driving travel

  surf the Internet

I'm not going to do anything at all

have lunch and dinner with friends

go and play badminton which is a bit of fun

When do you spend time with your family?

Well,I live with my family at the moment so that I can spare most of time with them, having breakfast and dinner, lying down on the sofa and discussing the plots of the TV drama together. Except that, when we are both at leisure, we will have a short trip for relaxation.

I’ve already moved out two years ago for the sake of study/work, so only when I have a few days off can I come back home for getting together with my parents. In most cases, we prefer to use We chat or make a phone call to communicate.

Do you think it is important to make the most of your weekend?

  先來(lái)解釋一下什么是make the most of 最大限度地利用,也就是說(shuō)好好的安排,好好的過(guò)一個(gè)充實(shí)的周末重不重要。

Sure, I agree a fully weekend is crucial because of the busy and boring life. I really hope I have free time to do something I am longing for. But others may not have the same view on this matter, they believe just lying down on the sofa is a perfect choice to relax as well.
