I've often felt that “step-parent” is a label we attach to men and women who marry into families where children already exist, for the simple reason that we need to call them something. It is most certainly an enormous “step”, but one doesn't often feel as if the term “parent” truly applies. At least that's how I used to feel about being a step-mother to my husband's four children.
我總覺得“繼父繼母”這個詞是對那些與已經(jīng)有了孩子然后又家庭聯(lián)姻的男女們所貼的標(biāo)簽,這么叫原因很簡單:我們總得管他們叫個什么。“繼父母”與“父 母”有一個“繼”字之差,讓人難以真正感覺到“父母”這個詞的適用性。至少,我剛做我丈夫四個孩子的繼母時,感覺是這樣的。
My husband and I had been together for six years. Although over the years, we all learned to adjust, to become more comfortable with each other, I continued to feel somewhat like an outsider. There was a definite boundary line that could not be crossed, an inner family circle which excluded me.

If a computer message came addressed to “Dad”, I'd feel forgotten and neglected. If my name appeared along with his, it would brighten my day and make me feel like I was part of their family unit.

Late one evening, as my husband was asleep and I was checking my e-mail, an “instant message” appeared on the screen. It was Margo, my oldest step-daughter. As we had done in the past, we sent several messages back and forth, exchanging the latest news. When we “chat” she wouldn't necessarily know if it was me or her dad—unless she asked. She didn't ask and I didn't identify myself either. After hearing the latest volleyball scores, the details about an upcoming dance at her school, I said I should get to sleep. Her return message read, “Okay, talk to you later! Love you!”

Once upon a time there was a great man who married the woman of his dreams. With their love, they created a little girl. She was a bright little girl and the man loved her very much.
從前有一個了不起的人,娶了他理想中的女人為妻。他們相愛并生了一個小女孩。小女孩很聰明,父親很喜歡她。
When she was very little, he would pick her up, hum a tune and dance with her, and he would tell her, "I love you, little girl."

When the little girl was growing up, the great man would hug her and tell her, "I love you, little girl." The little girl would pout and say, "I'm not a little girl anymore." Then the man would laugh and say, "But to me, you'll always be my little girl."

The little girl who-was-not-little-anymore left her home and went into the world. As she learned more about herself, she learned more about the man. She saw that he truly was great and one of his strengths was his ability to express his love to his family. It didn't matter where she went in the world, the man would call her and say, "I love you, little girl."

The day came when the great man had a stroke. He couldn't talk anymore. He could no longer smile, laugh, walk, hug, dance or tell the little girl that he loved her.

And so she went to the side of the great man. He looked at her and tried to speak, but he could not.

The little girl did the only thing she could do. She climbed up on the bed next to the great man. Tears ran from both of their eyes and she drew her arms around the shoulders of her father.

Her head on his chest, she thought of many things. She remembered the wonderful times together and how she had always felt protected and cherished by the great man. She felt grief for the loss she was to endure, the words of love that had comforted her.

And then she heard from within the man, the beat of his heart, the heart where the music and the words had always lived. And while she rested there, the magic happened. She heard what she needed to hear.

There, in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son. He was working on his future and nothing could stop him.
在匆忙的生活中,杰克幾乎沒時間回憶過去,也經(jīng)常沒時間陪妻子和兒子。他正在為他的將來努力奮斗,沒有什么可以阻擋他的腳步。
Over the phone his mother told him, "Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral is Wednesday." 電話里媽媽對他說,“貝爾瑟先生昨晚去世了,葬禮在周三舉行。”

Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel.
"Jack, did you hear me?"

"Oh sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It's been so long since I thought of him." Jack said.

"He spent a lot of time teaching me things he thought were important… Mom, I'll be there for the funeral," Jack said.

Jack kept his word and attended Mr. Belser's funeral.

The night before he returned home Jack and his Mom went to see Mr. Belser's old house one more time.

Standing in the doorway Jack paused for a moment. It was like crossing over into another dimension, a leap through space and time. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture...Jack stopped suddenly.
"What's wrong, Jack?" his Mom asked.
杰克在門口站了一會兒。那種感覺就像是穿越時空、回到了從前。每一個臺階都盛滿了回憶。每張照片,每件家具…突然,杰克停了下來。

"The box is gone," he said.
"What box?" Mom asked.

"There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he'd ever tell me was, 'The thing I value most.' Now I'll never know what was so valuable to him," Jack said.
It had been about two weeks since Mr. Belser died. One day Jack discovered a parcel list in his mailbox.
“在他的桌子上面,放著一個小小的,總是上著鎖的金盒子。我問過他無數(shù)次那盒子里面有什么東西。他總是告訴我說‘那是我最珍視的東西’。我現(xiàn)在永遠也沒法知道他最珍視的是什么東西了。”杰克說。

Early the next day Jack retrieved the package. The handwriting was difficult to read, but the return address caught his attention. Mr. Harold Belser," it read.
第二天一大早,杰克取回了包裹。包裹上的字跡很難辨認,但是寄信人地址卻吸引了他的注意:"哈羅德o貝爾瑟先生。
Jack tore it open. There inside was the gold box and an envelope. Jack's hands shook as he read the note inside.

"Upon my death please forward this box to Jack Bennett. It's the thing I value most in my life." His heart raced as tears filled his eyes. Jack carefully unlocked the box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch.
“在我死后,請把這個盒子轉(zhuǎn)交給杰克•貝內(nèi)特。這是我一生中最珍視的東西。"杰克的心跳加快,眼里噙滿了淚水。他小心翼翼地打開盒子,里面是一塊漂亮的金懷表。
He opened the cover. Inside he found these words engraved: "Jack, Thanks for your time! — Harold Belser."

"The thing he valued most...was...my time."

Jack held the watch for a few minutes, then called his office and cleared his appointments for the next two days…he needed some time to spend with his wife and son.
