I’m very glad to have received your e-mail. Thank you for your concern for me. Everything is going on well with me and mine.
Yes, SARS is striking our country, but not the whole. And not all the schools in Beijing are closed, either. As a matter of fact, most schools are going as usual, including mine. Frightened as some people are, yet majority are treating it rationally (理性地).
As scientists say, any new disease is incurable when it just appears to mankind. SARS is no

exception. So there should not be any fuss over it. According to the latest discovery, SARS spreads mainly by air. To protect us human beings from it, scientists have suggested many ways as follows:
Before going out, put your masks. Reduce your visits to your friends and relatives. When getting home, open your windows to keep the air in your room fresh and wash your hands and faces clean. If you have a temperature or get a cough, see the doctor as timely as possible.
Now, with scientists working all out on SARS, I’m sure the day will come soon when man conquer SARS as long as we unite as one.

Today we held a class meeting, at which we discussed the relationship between us and the great exploitation of West China. The class meeting gave me a deep impression of the strategy and I’ve learnt a lot from it.
Long, long ago, in West China appeared the old Chinese civilization. But as years rolled by, things changed a lot there. With the forest resources overused and the ecological environment badly destroyed, the climate there is getting less suitable for us to live and the desert area is
expanding. As a result, a prosperous area turned to a barren area and the people there are living a hard life. The low level of science and technology and the small population make it impossible to make full use of the rich natural resources in the vast area of West China.
The Great Exploitation of West China means much to us Chinese. It’ll help raise the average living level of the people all over the country as well as improve the living condition of the local people. What’s more, it can bring our economy to a balance, and that will speed up the development of the economy of our country. At the same time, it’ll also strengthen the unity of all the nationalities and our national defense in some way.
