  A: I’m bored. Do you want to do something tonight?

  B: Sure. What do you feel like doing?

  A: Well, the film festival is in town. And I’m in the mood for seeing a movie. How does that sound?

  B: I could go for a movie. What’s playing?

  A: ‘Attack from Planet Q’ is playing at the Odeon Theatre.

  B: What’s that about?

  A: It’s a sci-fi about aliens who invade China.

  It takes place along the Great Wall during the Ming Dynasty.

  B: Who’s in it?

  A: It’s starring Will Smith. He plays a palace guard who uncovers an alien plot to kill the Emperor.

  B: What do the critics say about it?

  A: The critics say it’s frightening and entertaining. It won ‘Best Film’ at the Cannes Film Festival.

  B: OK. Let’s see that. What time does it start?

  A: Show times are at 6:45 and 8:30.

  B: Why don’t we catch the 8:30 so that we can have a bite to eat before we go?

  A: Good morning, sir.

  B: Good morning, sit down, please.

  A: Thank you.

  B: Tell me a little bit about yourself.

  A: My name is David and I live in Shanghai, I was born in 1990. My major was electrical engineering. B: What kind of personality do you think you have? A: Well, I approach things very enthusiastically, I think, and I don’t like to leave things half-done. I’m very organized and extremely capable.

  B: How do you handle your failure?

  A: None of us was “perfect”. I am sure I will be given a

  second chance to correct my mistake. B: What are your weaknesses and strengths?

  A: Well, I’m afraid I’m a poor speaker, however I’m fully

  aware of this, so I’ve been studying how to speak in public. I suppose my strengths are those I’m persistent and a fast-learner.

  B: Do you have any licenses or certificates?

  A: I have a driver’s license, and I am a CPA.

  B: Tell me what you know about our company please.

  A: Well, the company was founded in New York in 1950 by

  Mark Ward, who was the first president. It has 1 billion dollars in capital; it employs 5000 people, and it is the largest company in its field in the states.

  B: What do you know about our major products and our share of the market?

  A: Our company’s products are mostly marketed in Europe

  and the United states, but particularly have sold very well here in China. So I think in the future you’ll find China to be a profitable market as well.

  B: Are you aware of the aspects of this position and do you feel you are qualified?

  A: Yes, I understand my qualification and your needs by

  researching your company.

  B: How do you normally handle criticism?

  A: Silence is golden. Just don’t say anything; otherwise the

  situation could become worse I do. However, accept constructive criticism.

  B: How do you handle your conflict with your colleagues in your work?

  A: I will try to present my ideas in a more clear and civilized manner in order to get my points across.

  B: Ok, if you enter this company, what section would you like to work in?

  A: If possible. I’d like to be positioned in International Trade Department.

  B: What starting salary do you expect?

  A: I’d like to start at ¥4000 a month.

  B: How can I contact you when we reach our decision?

  A: You can reach me at 1234567.

  B: Do you have any questions you would like to ask me?

  A: Yes, do you have allowance for transportation as well a housing packages, medical insurance and unemployment insurance?

  B: Yes, you all have any other questions?

  A: Can you tell me what is the company’s working hours? And would I have to work overtime very often? B: If you want to know this, this book will tell you. A: Thank you.

  B: If we reach our decision, I will call you, goodbye.

  A: Thank you, goodbye.

  PETER: Hello, Jim. Where are you going?

  JIM: To the cinema. What about coming with me?

  PETER: No, thanks. I'm going home. My wife's expecting me.

  JIM: What a pity. I believe it's a very good film.

  PETER: Do you go to the cinema a lot?

  JIM: Once a week. Most nights I sit at home and watch TV

  PETER: Do you know what's on tonight, by any chance?

  JIM: No, I'm sorry I don't. I never read the papers till I get home.

  PETER: Oh, I see. By the way, where are you going for your holidays this year?

  JIM: I don't know yet. My wife's going to her mother's for a couple of weeks. She lives by the sea, you know.

  PETER: Oh, does she? That's convenient.

  JIM: Yes, but I want to go to the country.

  PETER: Don't you like the sea?

  JIM: Yes, very much. But I need peace and quiet when I'm on holiday. What are you going to do?

  PETER: I'm going to stay at home.

  J1M: Aren't you going to have a holiday abroad this year?

  PETER: No, I want to buy a car, and that's going to take every penny I've got.
