C:How do you do? I've heard a lot about you.
A:How do you do? Oh, and this is my wife, Betty.
D:So happy to meet you both.─sit down, just make yourself at home.
B&C:Thank you.
C:What a lovely house!Did you make it yourself, Mrs. Johnson?
D:Oh, call me Beth. Yes,I did the decorating…if you can call it that. Actually, I just tried to make it as simple as possible. I don't like a lot of frills.
C:Oh, me, the same! That's why I think it's so beautiful...
A:Hi, do you have a minute to talk?
B:Sure. What’s going on? You don’t look too happy.
A:I’m not. I’m afraid I blew it with Cindy.
B:What do you mean you blew it with Cindy?
A:Well, yesterday afternoon she mentioned that she would like to go to the movies. I said I’d like to go too but I didn’t have enough money. So I asked her if she wouldn’t mind paying my way. Wow! She really blew a fuse.
B:I can imagine. What happened then?
A:She told me off for about ten minutes, told me that I was the cheapest guy she has ever met, called me loser, and then stormed off. I haven’t seen her or talked to her since then, and I don’t know what to do to make up with her.
B:Well, just take it easy. I’ll have a word with her to try to smooth things over. But don’t make a mistake like that again. Ok? Girls hate it when you ask them to pay.
A:I’ll try not to, believe me!
B:Good, next time just make an excuse about having an exam the next day!
A:Thanks for the advice.
A:How’s it going?
B:Not too bad. How are things going with you?
不錯(cuò)。
A:Great, just great. Hey, could you do me a favor? Will you keep an eye on my books? I’ll be back in five minutes.
B:Where are you going? Are you up to something? You look as though you are.
A:Not really. But here comes my girlfriend. I really don’t want to her to see me.
B:Why not? What’s the problem? Did you have a fight?
A:No, it’s nothing like that. She just had her heart set on seeing a movie tonight. I promised to take her. Then I discovered I didn’t have any money. I called her and said I was sick.
B:Relax. She’s going out the other door. You’re safe for the time being.
A:That was a close call. I’m lucky she didn’t see me. She would have really hit the roof.
