  20171104雅思大作文:

Some people say that government should spend money on measures to save languages that are used by few speakers, while others believe that it is a waste of financial resources. Discuss both these views and your own opinion.

  范文:

Thanks to the irreversible trend of globalization, people today living in different areas around the world have the same access to information and commodities. As a few languages spoken by most population become dominant globally, such as English, French and Chinese, some languages of minorities are on the edge of extinction. It is time for governments to take effective measures to protect languages at risk.

Admittedly, the investment in protecting a dying language is usually quite high and cannot yield immediate profits. It is difficult for governments with inadequate budgets to allocate enough money to support universities to recruit teachers and provide curriculums. Even worse, the government also has to spend much money on advertising and encouraging students who otherwise would rather learn a language spoken by most people. Moreover, it seems the extinction of a language spoken by a tiny group of population will not exert much effect on communication if those people are able to acquire other more popular and practical languages.

However, to save a language at risk means to save a culture and we can never over emphasize the significance of culture diversity. For any culture that exists in the world, it contains much valuable wisdom and life philosophy that we cannot afford to lose. To better understand a culture, we need to master its language. In addition, when those popular cultures become so dominant and powerful that they tend to colonize every inch of the world, it is even more vital to preserve cultures of minorities and resist assimilation. It is because that the uniqueness of a culture brings more possibilities. People growing up in different culture demonstrate divergent characteristics and contribute various ideas. It is more fun to live in a world with divergent cultures.

To sum up, though the financial costs of protecting a dying language is usually huge, the benefits of protecting languages of minorities and hence conserving culture diversity will finally justify the costs.
