A son and his father were walking on the mountains. Suddenly, his son fell, hurt himself and screamed: “AAAhhhh!!!”
To his surprise, he heard the voice repeating, somewhere in the mountain: “AAAhhhh!!!”
Curious, he yelled: “Who are you?” He received the answer: “Who are you?” And then he screamed to the mountain: “I admire you!” The voice answered: “I admire you!” Angered at the response, he screamed: “Coward (懦夫)!” He received the answer: “Coward!”
He looked to his father and asked, “What’s going on?”
The father smiled and said, “My son, pay attention.” Again the man screamed: “You are a champion!”
The voice answered, “You are a champion!”
The boy was surprised, but did not understand. Then the father explained, “People call this echo, but really this is life. It gives you back everything you say or do. Our life is simply a reflection (反映) of our actions. If you want more love in the world, create more love in your heart. If you want more competence (能力) in your team, improve your competence. In the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific, some villagers practice a unique form of logging. If a tree is too large to be cut with an ax, the natives cut it down by yelling at it. Woodsmen with special powers climb up on a tree just at dawn and suddenly scream at it at the top of their lungs. They continue this for thirty days. The tree dies and falls over.
The theory is that the yelling kills the spirit of the tree. According to the villagers, it always works. Ah, those poor na?觙ve (天真的) innocents! Such strangely charming habits of the jungle! Screaming at the tree indeed is primitive. Too bad they don’t have the advantages of modern technology and the scientific mind.
Me? I yell at my wife. And yell at the telephone and the lawn mower (割草機(jī)). And yell at the TV and the newspaper and my children. I’ve even been known to shake my fist and yell at the sky at times. The man next door yells at his car a lot. And this summer I heard him yell at a stepladder for most of an afternoon. We modern, urban, educated folks yell at the traffic and judges and bills and banks and machines — especially machines.
Don’t know what good it does. Machines and things just sit there. Even kicking doesn’t always help. As for people, well, the Solomon Islanders may have a point. Yelling at living things does tend to kill the spirit in them. Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words will break our hearts.
40. In the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific, people usually log average-sized trees by ______.
A. cutting them with axes B. climbing up on them

One afternoon I toured an art museum while waiting for my husband to finish a business meeting. I was looking forward to a quiet view of the masterpieces.
A young couple viewing the paintings ahead of me chattered nonstop between themselves. I watched them a moment and decided she was doing all the talking. I admired his patience for putting up with her constant words. Distracted (心煩意亂的) by their noise, I moved on.
I encountered them several times as I moved through the various rooms of art. Each time I heard her constant talking, I moved away quickly.
I was standing at the counter of the museum gift shop making a purchase when the couple approached the exit. Before they left, the man reached into his pocket and pulled out a white object. He extended it into a long cane (手杖) and then tapped his way into the coatroom to get his wife’s jacket.
“He’s a brave man,” the clerk at the counter said, “Most of us would give up if we were blinded at such a young age. During his recovery, he made a promise his life wouldn’t change. So, as before, he and his wife come in whenever there’s a new art show.”
“But what does he get out of the art?” I asked, “He can’t see.”
“Can’t see! You’re wrong. He sees a lot. More than you or I do,” the clerk said, “His wife describes each painting so he can see it in his head.”
I learned something about patience, courage and love that day. I saw the patience of a young wife describing paintings to a person without sight and the courage of a husband who would not allow blindness to change his life.
And I saw the love shared by two people as I watched this couple walk away arm in arm.

A 77-year-old former traffic policeman who for ten years had cared for his Alzheimer’s-stricken wife, walked into the hospital where she was being treated and shot her three times.
Vitangelo Bini then sat down at the foot of her bed to call police. When they arrived he told them: “I couldn’t stand to see her suffer any more.”
Mr. Bini, from Prato, in Tuscany, was in custody (拘留) after being charged with the homicide (殺人罪). His wife, Mara Tani, 82, had suffered from Alzheimer for about ten years and was admitted to the Misericordia e Dolce hospital in Prato last week when she lost consciousness.
Mr. Bini, who had been her full-time carer, had visited her several times a day, hospital staff told the police. On Saturday, however, witnesses said that he entered the room that she shared with five other women, hugged her and then put a towel over her face before shooting her in the head. Police officers happened to be on the same floor and arrived immediately. Mr. Bini did not put up any resistance and tried to explain his actions, although he appeared and sounded dazed and confused, the officers said. The couple’s children, a son and a daughter aged 43 and 44, were stunned by the news, Mr. Di Chierri said.

Orhan Pamuk, Turkey’s best-known novelist won the 2006 Nobel prize for Literature on Thursday.
Here are some reactions to the news from Turkey.
PINAR KUR, A LEADING FEMALE TURKISH NOVELIST
“For years, everybody has wished someone from Turkey would win the Nobel. But it is also known, both in Turkey and abroad, that this prize is much more related to politics than to literature, it is given more for political reasons. It is very unfortunate that this prize announcement was made on the same day as the (Armenian genocide) bill in France.”
SUAT KINIKLIOGLU, GERMAN MARSHALL PLAN OF THE UNITED STATES
“With all due respect to Orhan Pamuk, whose books I read and like, I believe his comments on the Armenian genocide have been influential in his winning this prize. I think many Turks will see it in this way, too and will not be cheering.
And this is the worst day that this could happen, when the French parliament approves a bill making it a crime to deny the Armenian genocide.
There is a political dimension (因素) to all this. I do not believe he was chosen purely on the basis of his artistic capacity, even though he is a great writer.”
BUKET UZUNER, TURKISH NOVELIST AND SHORT-STORY WRITER
“From now maybe (the world) can speak about ‘Turkish Literature’. I attach great importance to that. We had all hoped Yasar Kemal would win the Nobel, everyone knows this, but I’m also happy for Pamuk to win this prize.”
ZULFU LIVANELI, NOVELIST, COMPOSER AND SINGER
“It’s a very nice thing that Turkey received a Nobel Prize. When we look at this from a long-term view, we can say ... there is a Turkish Literature.”

A. happy B. disappointed C. angry D. jealous
53. According to Mr. BUKET UZUNER, ______.
A. another Turkish novelist should be given the prize
B. it is unfair for Pamuk to win this prize
C. no one in Turkey is worth the prize
D. he himself should be given the prize
54. ______ people think Orhan Pamuk was given the Nobel Prize for some political reasons.
A. Five B. Two C. Three D. Four

We have two daughters: Kristen is seven years old and Kelly is four.Last Sunday evening, we invited some people home for dinner.I dressed them nicely for the party, and told them that their job was to join Mommy in answering the door when the bell rang.
Mommy would introduce them to the guests, and they would take the guests' coats upstairs and put them on the bed in the second bedroom.
The guests arrived.I introduced my two daughters to each of them. The adults were nice and kind and said how lucky we were to have such good kids.
Each of the guests made a particular fuss (關(guān)愛) over Kelly, the younger one, admiring her dress, her hair and her smile. They said she was a great girl to be carrying coats upstairs at her age.
I thought to myself that we adults usually make a big "to do" over the younger one because she's the one who seemly more easily hurt.We do it with the best of intentions.
But we seldom think of how it might affect the other child.I was a little worried that Kristen would feel she was being outshined (遜色,相形見絀).I was about to serve dinner when I realized that she had been missing for twenty minutes.I ran upstairs and found her in the bedroom, crying.
I said, "What are you doing, my dear?"
`She turned to me with a sad expression and said, "Mommy, why don't people like me the way they like my sister? Is it because I'm not pretty? Is that why they don't say nice things about me as much?"
I tried to explain to her, kissing and hugging her to make her feel better.
Now, whenever I visit a friend's home, I make it a point to speak to the elder child first.
56.What were Kristen and Kelly asked to do last Sunday evening? (No more than 20 words.)

One possible version:
Recently a debate about mercy killing caused by a 28-year-old girl, Li Yan, has come into public spotlight. Li Yan has suffered from a serious disease for years, as a result of which she is completely dependent on her parents for a living. She calls for the government to pass the law that allows mercy killing. It goes without saying that her appealing is turned down.
It sounds reasonable that we should try our best to live in this world no matter what difficulties we may be confronted with. However, if you were in Li Yan’s position, what would you do? As far as I am concerned, we human beings have the right to choose to live with dignity. When life means bitterness and misery, that is, when it is hard for us human beings to live with dignity, maybe mercy killing is the way out. I do hope our country can take a flexible attitude in dealing with mercy killing.
