WHITE What are you doing this evening, Towers?

How to Be a Better Student

Maybe you are a common student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here's how:

Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First set your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don't forget to set aside enough time for entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.

Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.

Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. This will help you understand the next class. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.

Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won't end if you don't pass a test, so don’t be over worried.

There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover them after you have tried these.

  48. The writer gives you ______ methods to help you in the passage.

  A. Four. B. Five. C. Six. D. Seven.

  49. What should you do if you want to plan your time?

  A. Make a schedule of your time. B. Find a good study area.

  C. Take advantage of class time. D. Review the important points.

  50. How can we remember what the teacher says?

  A. By taking notes in class. B. By concentrating on the subject.

  C. By listening to everything. D. By discussing with your classmates.

  51. What is the purpose of a test according to the writer?

  A. To help you solve some problems.

  B. To make us become better students.

  C. To discover if you are interested in a subject.

  D. To show what you have learned about a subject.

  D

Are you shy? If you are, you are not alone. In fact, close to 50 percent of people are shy. Almost 80 percent of people feel shy at some point in their lives. These days, shyness is becoming more and more common. Now, scientists are trying to understand shyness. They have some interesting ideas about why people are shy.

Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly. These babies are a little quieter and more watchful than other babies. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. As a result, scientists think that some shyness is genetic.

Family size might cause people to be shy as well. Scientists at Harvard University studied shy children. They found that 66 percent of them had older brothers and sisters. As a result, they became shy. At the same time, children with no brothers and sisters may be shy as well. Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not able to learn the same social skills as children from big families.

You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied shyness in different countries, they found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy. But in Israel, only one of three people said so. What explains the difference? One scientist says the Japanese and Israelis have different opinions of failure. In Japan, when people do not succeed, they feel bad about themselves. They blame(責(zé)備)themselves for their failure. In Israel, the opposite is true. Israelis often blame failure on outside reasons, such as family, teachers, friends, or bad luck. In Israel, freedom of opinion and risk taking are strongly supported. This may be why Israelis worry less about failure and are less shy.

For shy people, it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job. But scientists say you can get over your shyness. They suggest trying new things and practicing conversation. And don’t forget---if you are shy, you are not the only one.

  52. What is the passage mainly about?

  A. Happiness. B. Shyness. C. Kindness. D. Loneliness.

53 What does the underlined word “genetic” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

  A. Passed down from parents. B. Learned from friends

  C. Taught by teachers. D. Made up by brothers.

  54. Which one is not the reason of shyness according to the scientists’ ideas?

  A. Genetics. B. Family size C. Failure D. Birthplace.

  55. What can you do if you want to get over your shyness?

  A. Try to know why you are shy.

  B. Talk to your parents and blame them.

  C. Try to learn some social skills.

  D. Try new things and practice conversation.

Our dog Abbey died last month. My 4-year-old daughter Lucy missed her a lot and asked if we could write a letter to God to make sure he could look after Abbey well. 56 . She dictated (口述) these words:

  Dear God,

Will you please take care of my dog? 57 . I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick. I hope you will play with her. 58 . I am sending a picture of her so when you see her you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.

  Love, Lucy

  Dear Lucy,

  Abbey has arrived in heaven.

  八、閱讀短文,根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答問(wèn)題。(共10分,每小題2分)

My friend Brett had just got a bike. A lot of kids in my neighborhood knew how to ride. I also wanted to ride, but all the boys told me I couldn’t do it because I was a girl. I decided to prove them wrong, so Brett let me try his bike. I wasn’t on for one minute before I fell off. He came over to see if I was OK, but then started laughing.

That night I told my dad the whole story about how I wanted to be as good as boys. A few days later my dad told me he had found a nice bike. He brought it home and that was when I became the laughing stock (笑柄) of the neighborhood. All the boys thought it was a joke that I actually wanted to learn how to ride.

My dad spent four long weeks teaching me everything I needed to know about the bike and the basics of riding. Day after day and night after night he worked with me, and I began to progress.

Each ride on my dirt bike, I got a little better, and finally I was ready for my first time on a trip with some boys. At first I couldn’t keep up and the boys had to wait for me. My bike often got stuck in the muddy creeks.

Every time I came back, I would cry, and every time I cried my dad was there to put his arms around me. He would tell me not to listen to them and that with more practice, I would be as good as others or better than them.

Things eventually got easier, as if I could ride with my eyes closed. I am still made fun of, not because I’m an amateur (技術(shù)不熟練的人) or not good, but because they felt threatened that a girl can do what they did.

  61. Why did all the boys say that the writer couldn’t ride a bike?

  62. Did the writer’s father get her a bike?

  63. How long did it take for the writer to learn to ride a bike?

  64. What happened to the writer’s bike when she first had a trip with some boys?

  65. What can you learn from the writer according to the story?

And I will read more computer books. I'll join the computer club in high school. In conclusion, I will do some things to improve my computer operation. I am sure my dream will come true one day. Possible version 2

We had a discussion in our classroom last month. The topic is, “What is your dream job?” Everybody has his dream. Some want to be teachers, others want to be scientists. My dream is to become a doctor.

My friends asked me why. I told them my story. When I was a small boy, I was very weak. Once I was terribly ill. I had a high fever. My parents sent me to the nearby hospital, but the doctors could do nothing for me. Then my parents heard there was a very good doctor in another town. They took me there. I was saved.

A good doctor can save people’s lives. From then on, I decided to become a doctor. I know it is not easy to be a doctor. But I am determined to study hard. I am sure my dream will come true. (145)

Hello, my name is Kate. I have studied in a nursing school for three years. During my second month of the school, our teacher gave us a small test. I answered the questions very quickly until I read the last one, “What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?” I thought this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman a few times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how could I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our grade. “Of course,” said the teacher, “As a nurse, you will meet many people. You should care all of them, even if al1 you do is just to smile and say ‘hello’.” I've never forgotten that lesson. Later I learned her name was Sandy.

Attention, please. Boys and girls, we are going to visit the city museum tomorrow. I hope all of you can come. There are lots of interesting things about the cinema and how films are made. We will leave at 7:00 outside the school gate. Don’t be late.

The visit starts on the ground floor. You can see the introductions of some old movies. Take as long as you want to look at everything, because we won't come back. Then you'll go upstairs to the first floor. After you arrive at the Inventors of the 20th Century Room, please read the invention stories and look at some modern inventions as well. When you finish, take the lift up to the fourth floor. On the fourth floor, you’ll see how films were made fifty years ago. That’ll be very interesting.

What’s next? Oh, yes, the cost. It’ll be twenty-five dollars each. You’ll need to write things down, so take a pencil and a notebook with you. We’ll have lunch in the museum restaurant, so you needn’t take any food with you. Well, I think that’s everything.
