My mother got there late that night, and saw me lying in the emergency room. The next morning, mom called the manager and told him what had happened and that I would be in the hospital for a long time.A few hours later,I received a phone call—it was the guy I hadn't given my number.Well,he came to visit me that night and the next night. We spent a lot of time together.
It was months before I would be walking and driving again, but he'd sit by me.I don't think I could have pulled through it without him.Now I can walk freely, and just this week we are planning on getting married one year after the day we met. It's just amazing how a tragedy like a car accident could bring about such a wonderful relationship!

When a handheld video game runs out of power, all you have to do is plug it in and charge it up.Within a few years, some of you might do the same thing with mom's car.Automobile companies are developing vehicles that will plugin to electric sockets (插座),just like many laptops, digital cameras, cellphones and small video game players do.Called “plugin hybrids (混合動力車)”,these cars will get most of their power from electricity.Their drivers will rarely have to stop at gas stations.
The technology is more than just cool.In our automobilefilled world, plugin vehicles could reduce the amount of gasoline we use. That gas is made from crude oil (原油),which keeps rising in cost.Plus, driving around in these hybrids may even help the environment.Gasburning cars produce a lot of carbon dioxide,a type of greenhouse gas. These gases stay in the atmosphere, where they trap (困住) heat and cause global warming.
The first companyproduced plugin hybrids could hit the roads by 2010.But engineers still have a lot of work to do to make the technology practical and inexpensive.
Batteries are the biggest challenge. In the pluginhybrid world, lithiumion (鋰離子) (Liion) batteries are getting the most attention. These batteries can store a large amount of energy in a small package, and they last a relatively long time between charges.Liion batteries are standard in laptops, cellphones, heart devices and other similar portable (便攜的) devices.
But because cars are so big and heavy,it would still require a suitcasesized Liion battery to power about 12km of driving. What's more, the batteries are extremely expensive.
“A car filled with batteries could go a long distance,” says Ted Bohn,an electrical engineer in Chicago.“But it couldn't haul (拖拉) any people, and it would cost $100,000.”
So researchers need to figure out how to make batteries smaller and cheaper, among other questions.
“The answers don't exist yet,” Bohn says.“As a kid I thought someone someplace knows the answer to everything. All of these questions haven't been decided. That's what engineering is about—making a guess, running tests and finetuning (微調(diào)) results.”
59. The passage mainly talks about of a new car.
A.the batteries B.the speed C.the developing D.the appearance
60. Which is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The plugin hybrids will use electricity completely as driving power.
B.The new technology will contribute to the protection of our environment.
C.The technology of using electricity as driving is quite mature(成熟) now.
D.The biggest challenge of the new technology is that it will cost us more money.
61. How does Bohn feel about the future of the new technology according to the last paragraph?
A.Confident. B.Puzzled. C.Worried. D.Disappointed.
62. The new technology is facing the following problems EXCEPT that .
A.the technology isn't practical up to now
B.the cost of the new technology is quite high
C.the size of the batteries is too big at present
D.the government won't support the technology
(C)
According to the United States government, people are classified as homeless if they have no place to stay and no expectation of finding a place for the next thirty days. Although technically accurate, that is an impersonal assessment of an enormous and very human problem.
The homeless population represents all of us Americans. It includes men and women, the elderly, children, and infants. Its members are from all ethnic groups. What they have in common is poverty.
Currently in the U.S., thirty-nine million people live in poverty. When money is really tight, paying the rent or buying food often becomes a choice. Government assistance in the form of food stamps does help but, as one homeless man explains, you can’t pay the rent with food stamps.
With no money for rent, the streets and homeless shelters become the alternative.
Although men make up the largest group within the homeless population, homeless women with children are rapidly joining them. In fact, one quarter of the homeless people in the U.S. are teenagers and young children.
People may become homeless for numerous reasons. However, there are certain factors that many of these individuals have in common. They include a lack of adequate education and job skills. A majority of the teenagers and adults have not completed high school.
The abuse of alcohol and drugs is also a common factor. One third of the adult homeless population abuses alcohol, while one quarter of the same group uses drugs.
Some members of this population suffer mental health problems. Within the past several years many institutions for the mentally ill have been closed and their patients sent “home”. Unfortunately, a number of those people have no home to go to and they are unable to adequately look after themselves.
Job loss in today’s economy has also become a real factor in the loss of people’s homes. The breakup of families through abandonment and divorce is also contributing factors, particularly when there are children involved. The parent who is left to care for the kids with inadequate income may be forced to depend on the homeless shelters to put a roof over their heads.
63.The underlined word “impersonal” in paragraph1 can be replaced by _________.
A. insincere B. unbearable C. uncivilized D. unsympathetic
64.The U.S. government helps the homeless by _________.
A. giving them homeless allowance(津貼) B. giving them food stamps
C. finding jobs for them D. finding residence (a place to live) for them
65.People become homeless for all the following reasons EXCEPT _________.
A. the lack of adequate education
B. the abuse of alcohol and drugs
C. the closure of institutions for the mentally ill
D. the poor performance of economy
66.The breakup of families is likely to lead to homelessness because a parent with kids may _________.
A. lose his or her job in today’s economy
B. be unable to look after the kids
C. not have enough income
D. find residence at a homeless shelter

PROPOSAL
Boys and girls, water is an important natural resource to us. With the development of economy, the demand for water is increasing. But the fact is, less and less clean water is available, while polluted water can be found everywhere. Besides, the problem of wasting water is becoming more and more serious. What shall we do in face of the present situation? I propose everyone should do the following things:
Firstly, form the habit of protecting and saving water ourselves, and turn off the taps after we use water.
Secondly, tell people not to throw rubbish into waters because it will cause pollution. And at the same time tell them how to save and reuse water.
Thank you.

When I looked at the grade on my math paper my jaw almost dropped to the ground: a big “65” in bright red ink. I had never received such a terrible grade before.
I was so ashamed that when I got home that afternoon I lied to my dad. I told him I got 85 and that the report wouldn’t come until the end of the month. Dad smiled. His daughter would never lie about her grade, so he didn’t doubt the unusual delay of my report.
A month later, Dad casually asked me again about the report at the dinner table. He looked right into my eyes and asked for an answer. Having no choice, I told him that I had in fact got just 65 in my math final. I had lied because I didn’t want to let him down.
For a moment, he just looked at me. I would have preferred a telling off than that silence. Finally, Dad said, in a hurt voice, “You have already let me down, with your lie. I am not disappointed at your math score. That is no big deal – no one can be perfect all the time. But I am very disappointed in you. If you can’t be honest with your dad, who can you be honest with? It’s much easier to achieve a better grade than rebuild someone else’s trust in you.”
Dad’s words touched my heart. I couldn’t forgive myself for having hurt his feelings. I took out the report that I had been hiding for weeks, handed to him and apologized, sincerely. I realized that my honesty is not only important to me personally, but to those around me that truly care about my well-being.
In one of Shakespeare’s plays a character says: “No legacy is so rich as honesty.” After the crisis between Dad and me, I began to understand those words.

When the shooting of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was complete, it was much more than a movie wrap-up (結(jié)束).
Rupert Grint, who played Ron Weasley, told The Sunday Times that he’s happy to have the time for romance now filming is over. Emma Watson, who is Hermione Granger in the movies, said she looked forward to “finally being free, being my own person” – a change signaled by her new haircut.
Daniel Radcliffe, who has been the face of the boy wizard since 2001, said that he “did cry like a little girl” when the last movie finished.
“It’s like the ending of a relationship,” he told The Vancouver Sun. “There’s a sense of, ‘God, what am I going to do now?’” He said he was eager to see “what life holds for him beyond Hogwarts”.
Along with the three actors, Harry Potter fans, now in their late teens, came of age with J.K. Rowling’s characters. For them, the last film isn’t just a goodbye to a decade of magic, but the close of their childhoods.
“We are the Harry Potter generation,” Canadian Andrea Hill, 19, told The Vancouver Sun. “We started in elementary school, reading about a boy our age who was going through the same things we were going through. We grew up, so did he.”
For Emily Chahal, an 18-year-old student, the series has been an inspiring journey. “That first book was what started my love of literature. It was the inspiration for everything – really teaching me to appreciate my friends, and to face difficulties with a sense of courage,” she said. “I have a sense of sadness. The end of the movies is kind of the end of my childhood, too.”
Fortunately, to the delight of die-hard fans, there are many things that keep the boy wizard alive. For example, in June this year, a Harry Potter theme park opened in Florida, US.
Some schools in the US and UK also have Quidditch teams – players ride broomsticks. “We’re not waiting anymore to see what happens to Harry next,” Hill told The Vancouver Sun. She founded a Quidditch club at Carleton University in Canada. “We’re still engaged in that magical world.”
55. How did Emma Watson feel when she finished the shooting of the Harry Potter series?
A. She cried like a little girl.
B. She was ready to move onto something new.
C. She was happy to have the time for romance.
D. She felt it was like the end of a relationship.
56. What did Daniel Radcliffe mean by saying he was eager to see “what life holds for him beyond Hogwarts”?
A. He was bored with life in Hogwarts.
B. He couldn’t wait to graduate from Hogwarts.
C. He missed life in Hogwarts now he had left.
D. He was looking forward to new life out of Hogwarts.
57. The series has brought Emily Chahal all the following EXCEPT _______.
A. the chance to live in a magical world
B. the courage to face difficulties
C. the appreciation of her friends
D. encouragement to love literature
58. What is the main focus of the article?
A. Celebration of the close of childhood.

What’s your dream vacation? Watching wildlife in Kenya? Boating down the Amazon? Sunbathing in Malaysia? New chances are opening up all the time to explore the world. So we visit travel agents, compare packages and prices, and pay our money.
We know what our vacation costs us. But do we know what it might cost someone else? It’s true that many poorer countries now depend on tourism for foreign income. Unfortunately, though, tourism often harms the local people more than it helps them.
It might cost their homes and lands. In Myanmar, 5,200 people were forced to leave their homes among the pagodas(佛塔)in Bagan so that tourists could visit the pagodas.
Tourism might also cost the local people their livelihood and dignity. Local workers often find only menial(卑微的)jobs in the tourist industry. And most of the profits do not help the local economy. Instead, profits return to the tour operators in wealthier countries. When the Maasai people in Tanzania were driven from their lands, some moved to city slums. Others now make a little money selling souvenirs or posing for photos.
Problems like these were observed more than 20 years ago. But now some non-government organizations, tour operators and local governments are working together to begin correcting them. Tourists, too, are putting on the pressure.
The result is responsible tourism, or“ethical tourism.”Ethical tourism has people at its heart. New international agreements and codes of conduct can help protect the people’s lands, homes, economies and cultures. The beginnings are small, though, and the problems are complex.
But take heart. The good news is that everyone, including us, can play a part to help the local people in the places we visit. Tour operators and companies can help by making sure that local people work in good conditions and earn reasonable wages.
They can make it a point to use only locally owned hotels, restaurants and guide services. They can share profits fairly to help the local economy. And they can involve the local people in planning and managing tourism.
What can tourists do? First, we can ask tour companies to provide information about the conditions of local citizens. We can then make our choices and tell them why. And while we’re abroad, we can:
★Buy local foods and products, not imported ones.
★Pay a fair price for goods and services and not bargain for the cheapest price.
★Avoid flaunting(炫耀) wealth.
★Ask before taking photographs of people. They are not just part of the landscape! Let’s enjoy our vacation and make sure others do, too.
59.What is probably the best title for the article?
A.Tourism Causes Bad Effects B.Tourism Calls for Good Behavior
C.Vacations Bring a Lot of Fun D.Vacations Cost More Than You Think
60.The underlined phrase“take heart”means“ ”.
A.pay attention B.take care C.cheer up D.calm down
61.According to the passage, the writer thinks .
A.tourism is not a promising industry.
B.dream vacations should be spent abroad
C.the problems caused by tourism are easy to settle.
D.tourists should respect local customs and culture
D
Research shows that humans switch from selfish to unselfish behavior when they are watched. Do you?
A picture of a set of eyes on a computer screen can cause a change in the way people act. Even images of eyes on a charity donation, collection box encourage people to be unselfish, because people put more money in a
collection box that has a picture of eyes on it than they do when a flower symbol is on the box.
Manfred Milinski from the Max-Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Germany and Bettina Rockenbach of the University of Berlin, the authors of a new study, found that people act better when they are being watched because they feel they will be rewarded for good behavior. Their report also referred to other research showing that this response of behaving well when watched is somehow coded into humans and people respond this way unconsciously, or without realizing it.
It is not just humans that act unselfishly when they are being watched. A fish called the grooming fish cleans other fish. When other fish are around, it is gentler. When no other fish are around, however, the grooming fish bites chunks from the fish it is supposed to be cleaning.
The researchers suggest that the best way to get people to behave in the correct way is to make them feel watched. This could be the reason for the success of a famous American army poster. On it was a picture of an elderly man staring fiercely and pointing, it appeared, to the person who was looking at the poster. Under the picture was the caption 'I Want You' It encouraged hundreds of thousands of young American men to join the army during the Second World War to fight the Germans and Japanese.
62.According to the report, why does a person behave better when he feels he is being watched?
A.He does not want to be shamed by others.
B.He needs to show he is a good person.
C.He desires others to like him more.
D.He feels he will receive some social reward.
63.What is the text mainly about?
A.It describes changed behavior when observed.
B.It details ways to control people's behavior.
C.It tells how to make people work harder.
D.It discusses different advertising methods.
64.According to the text, which of the following statements is true?
A.People pretend to behave better when they are watched.
B.Fish bite other fish in a fish tank when they are alone.
C.People donate more money when they feel they are watched.
D.Soldiers fought better during World War II because of a poster.
65.Where would the study described in the text most likely be found?
A.In a newspaper. B.In a scientific journal.
C.In an advertising magazine. D.In a science textbook.

I used to be the messiest person alive. Over the years, through watching others and by trial and error, I have finally found ways to come up with plans, organize them and follow through with them.
Make an outline of everything you need to have and do to make your plan happen. Make a list of all of the steps that need to be accomplished and think about what needs to be done.
Detail everything thoroughly and read over it so you can start coming up with some mental solutions of how to carry out your plans.
You should ensure that if for some reason way one doesn’t work, you have way two and way three to lean back on. Therefore, different ways are needed at hand. It’s just a matter of being organized. Chances are that there is always more than one way of doing things, and chances are that if one of the other ones will.
Committing yourself to finishing at least at least part if not all of your plan at once is also necessary. It will show that you not only have initiative to get things rolling, but that you are interested in the results obtained with making the move to get everything done.
If you make a commitment to finish before a specific time, make sure that you carry that out, and be sure to do everything in the way you said you would, within the time-frame you set for your self.
Don’t try to tackle more things all at a time. All that does is to delay your progress, distract you and make you lose your interest, motivation and energy.
Carrying out an effective plan requires being as organized as possible. You will only achieve this by sticking to the order of the plan and not turn away from it or trying to do more at a time.
Last but not least, you should never abandon things mid-project. It will only annoy everyone around you including yourself. Unfinished plans are a waste of time, energy and, in some cases, even money.
So, don’t be afraid of organization. The older we get, the more necessary it becomes to have the skills necessary to follow through with confidence and to be able to carry through plans in an organized and manageable way. It pays to be organized, after all.

六、書面表達(dá)
Nowadays, SMS interaction has become a major part of various programs. Recently, there has been a fierce argument over the topic among the netizens. Opinions are divided as follows.
The defenders consider it a good way for us to take part in the program, while the critics hold the opinion that it is just another way for the TV stations to make more money. As for me, I stick to the former.
In the first place, seldom does everyone have the opportunity to watch the live show. Therefore, by sending short messages, people can really take an active part in the program rather than just passively watch it, which allows them to support their favorite performers as well as comment on them. Additionally, the average person can afford to send the short message for the low charge. What’s more, the rules of many live competitions have been changed due to the participation of the audience by sending messages. For instance, the final result of some programs are no longer only determined by the judges but also by the audience..
In conclusion, SMS interaction has largely changed the way people enjoy TV programs. However, there is no doubt that there do exist some problems that need further improvement. Anyway, whichever way it chooses, it should serve the basic purpose of the programs—to reach a large audience and entertain us.

The Indians today live in much the same way as their ancestors. Most of them are farmers. Many work in the mines, for mining is the most important industry on Bolivia’s. This is a very funny war movie set in World War Two. Six soldiers (including Sammy Turblow) have to get to Italy to take secret messages to the American army there. During the movie, they dress up as women and fight with Italian workers. You can guess the ending, but it's great fun getting there.

Earlier in the day, 96 South Koreans, of whom more than three-quarters were at the age of 70 or older, crossed the inter-Korean border(韓朝邊界), heading for the Kumgang resort to meet their families separated by the 1950—1953 Korean War.
Arriving at the DPRK's resort in the afternoon, South Koreans met with their long-separated families at a large-scale gathering at around 3 p.m. local time, and later are to have a dining meeting in the evening.
The separate, personal meetings are planned to be held on Sunday.
The South Korean families will come back home on Monday after the three-day gathering, followed by the second-session reunion event which will last from Tuesday to Thursday.

The Chong Yang Festival is celebrated on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, and it is also known as the Double Ninth Festival.
The festival began as early as the Warring States Period (475BC-221BC). According to the yin/yang dichotomy(二分法), yin represents the elements of darkness and yang represents life and brightness. Among Chinese numbers, nine belongs to positive numbers and it is regarded as yang. The ninth day of the ninth lunar month is a double yang day; hence people start to say Chong Yang Festival. The ninth month also predicts the approach of winter. It is a time when the living need warm clothing, and Chinese sons and daughters extended this to make the festival a time for providing winter clothes for their ancestors. The Double Ninth Festival, therefore, also became an occasion to visit the graves of dead family members. Clothes made of paper would be burned as offerings.
The Double Ninth Festival sees various activities. On the Double Ninth Festival, people usually climb mountains, appreciate chrysanthemums (菊花), drink chrysanthemums wine, and eat cakes. Ancient people thought climbing a mountain on this day could help them avoid misfortune and prevent disasters, and this gradually evolved into a relaxation and exercise.
Ancient people used to wear cornel (山茱萸) and admire chrysanthemums. Cornel is a kind of plant with edible(可食用的) fruit, while its stem and leaves have medicinal value. To prevent plague(瘟疫) and drive off smelly smells, people wear cornel and chrysanthemums on the Double Ninth Festival, and drink tea and wine made from the flowers.
Nowadays many people will still climb mountains, admire chrysanthemums, appreciate the beautiful scenery of autumn and eat cakes. In recent years, new contents have been added into this ancient festival, which has become a time to show respect for the elderly. People hold various activities in honor of senior citizens, wishing them good health and a long life.
The Double Ninth Festival is also a time for family get-togethers. It is an occasion to remember one’s ancestors, the sacrifices they made and the hardships they underwent. Often, family outings are organized during which people search to renew their appreciation of nature and to reaffirm(重申) their love and concern for family members and close friends.

Good afternoon, everyone!
The topic of my speech today is “Do trust us—a generation born in the 90s”.
Living in an environment full of fiercer competition, we, a generation born in the 90s, are faced with more problems in entering higher schools and getting employed. Under these circumstances, we are developing our special manners and values, which has raised people’s concern.
They worry we care too much about ourselves and are unwilling to cooperate with others, which makes it hard for us to achieve success in whatever we do. Besides, they consider us as lacking in determination, without which, we may easily give up in time of difficulty. They are also concerned that we are so eager to win instant fame that we follow fashion blindly, which will in turn ruin our values and future.
However, we, a generation born in the 90s,have our own advantages despite some weaknesses. Firstly, we have the courage to meet challenges and take risks, which helps realize our dreams. In addition, we are quick-minded and creative. We can do our work more efficiently. Please do trust us!
