In a highly competitive environment, the ability to create competitive edges over one's adversaries and to achieve ultimate victory in fierce competitions depends not so much on materials resources as on the mental factors of intelligence and concepts. Those concepts that can lead to new visions and perspectives and those approaches that can effectively solve problems will have the greatest value. The overriding factor which ensures the eventual materialization of new concepts and gives rise to effective approaches is management. As a branch of applied science, the science of management has crucial value not only for developing countries like China which are making uttermost efforts to catch up with the developed countries, but also for the leading multinational giants in the developed countries themselves. For a person like me who has decided to pursue marketing management as my career objective, to sharpen my intellectual caliber, to understand the essence of management and to grasp important skills of management have become my greatest aspiration.

As a Master's student specializing in marketing and enterprise strategies, I am very proud to report that I have made some encouraging research achievements. Of the two research papers that I wrote concerning strategic development of enterprises-Enterprise Strategic Alliance Based on Resource Complementarity and The Strategic Orientation and Countermeasures for Chinese Enterprises in International Operations in the New Millennium, the former has been published by Economic Tribune in Sept. 2002 and the latter has been accepted for publication by China Economists in Feb. 2003. These two research papers are the fruition of my active involvement in a research project named Study on Chinese Enterprises' Cooperation-Competition Models in Hyper-Competitive Conditions, which is sponsored by China State Natural Science Foundation (Foundation Project No. 70140132)。 Another paper entitled Brand Marketing: A Competitive Mode on a Higher Level in Modern Economics has been published by Contemporary Finance & Economics in November this year. Those research achievements can unmistakably indicate my tremendous potential to perform much more ambitious researches in my future degree program and I am determined to develop this potential to the fullest extent.

I completed my four-year systematic studies in Engineering and Management Science as an undergraduate at the School of Economics and Management, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. It is precisely this undergraduate education that has reinforced my determination to pursue marketing management as my lifelong career. Although as an undergraduate my understanding of some courses cannot be described as profound (some might even be said to be rather superficial), my learning of those courses nevertheless widened my ken of knowledge and broadened my vision.

In order to further enrich myself, I availed myself of every opportunity of academic exchange both on campus and off campus. I shuttled among Peking University, Central Finance and Economics University, and China Renmin University on my bicycle in order to attend lectures delivered by the country's leading scholars and entrepreneurs. Those lectures constituted an important supplement to my in-class training because they were immediately connected with the realities of Chinese society. I also benefited importantly from my extracurricular activities. As minister of the Department of Social Practices of the School's Students Union, I planned and organized the School's Festival of the Art of Management. I also canvassed Pepsi Company to sponsor our university's basketball league match. In launching those activities, I improved my organizational and managerial skills. In retrospection, my undergraduate program was most strengthened by my self-conscious attention to various applied subjects-higher mathematics, statistics and probability, linear algebra, operations research, etc. It can be said that my undergraduate education (in which my overall scholastic performance ranked top 4th in my class consisting of 30 students) enabled me to make some basic preparations in theoretical knowledge and in the application of mathematical tools.

From Sept. 1998 to April 2000, my employment with Hisense Group in QingDao City, Shandong Province (one of the largest manufacturers of electrical appliances in China) was a major opportunity to practice what I had learned. The second year I joined the Group, the most fierce price warfare happened to China's electrical appliances industry. Manufacturers reduced the prices of their products to unprecedented low levels in order to maximize their market share. As an act of market competition, the Marketing Department where I worked launched Traveling Expositions of Hisense Products. As one of the four key personnel of the department, I planned and organized a series of exhibitions in most major cities in China. Our one-year efforts achieved remarkable market effects. In Shijiazhuan City, for instance, of a total of 30 brands, our sales of televisions and air conditioners accounted for 24% and 18% respectively in 2000. In that year's performance evaluation, I was awarded the Group's Model Employee.

My understanding of marketing was enriched and modified by my 2-year practical work experience. To me, marketing was not merely composed of such elements as product designing, promotion through advertising, pricing models, and distribution channels. It also encompassed the analysis of the behavior both of your competitors and of consumers, studies in organization behavior, brand management, and decision-makings. Believing that a more systematic education would contribute to a more successful career, I went back to my alma mater in September 2000 and went on with a Master's program in Engineering and Management Science in order to gain knowledge on a higher professional level, to follow the most updated academic information, and to improve my managerial caliber.

Backed by my work experience, my academic focus became better-defined and I was more self-motivated in my studies. With a comprehensive coursework covering advanced mathematical planning, decision-making strategies, management statistics, and fuzzy mathematics, I achieved obvious improvement in theoretical knowledge and in the application of tools. I developed broader perspectives and was able to conduct my research from more advanced professional levels. My thesis, entitled A Study of Enterprises' Strategic Alliances Based on an Analysis of Resource Complementarity, presented a wholly novel explanation of corporate alliances from the perspective of resource integration, a perspective which differed fundamentally from the conventional view held by most scholars which explained the necessity and justification of corporate alliance from the angle of transaction cost and value chain.

Instead of feeling contented with my high GPA for the Master's program (3.6), I have come to realize how much there is still for me to learn in the field of management, especially in marketing. Most universities in China treat marketing purely as a theoretical course, with neither case analysis nor opportunities for students to practice the theories they have learned. In terms of curriculum, studies in marketing psychology and individual behavior have hardly been undertaken. Moreover, the lack of analytical tools has resulted in insufficient analysis of the market feedback. Realizing that such deficiencies can scarcely be overcome within a short period of time, I believe that a more successful career must be pursued through a Ph.D. program outside China, ideally in a first-rate university in the United States.

With my undergraduate and graduate background in engineering and management science, I would like to focus on one of the following areas in your Ph.D. program: a. marketing management; b. behavioral approaches to marketing or consumer behavior; and c. channels of distribution. I have also drawn up my tentative career objective. I will complete my doctoral program by undertaking extensive researches and carrying out some specific projects. After obtaining my degree, I will seek some teaching experiences in an American university while continuing with advanced researches on the latest research topics. In this way I can keep developing my academic aptitudes. After accumulating sufficient teaching and research experience, I will seek a teaching position in a prestigious university in China where I will share with my future students and colleagues my research findings and the knowledge I have acquired in the United States. I hope to develop myself ultimately into a leading specialist in marketing and management who can contribute to bringing Chinese scholarship in this field onto a more advanced level.

CMU's Ph.D. program in computer science is heavily integrated with research activities and is designed to nurture people with raw talent and intellect in an environment which permits them thorough immersion in research and coursework. The program promises to produce well-educated researchers and future leaders in computer science. I am very excited over this wonderful vision because such a program offers me a basis to translate my dreams into realities. Without such a program, many of my dreams will remain mere fantasies.

Program: 20th Century American Literature

“The apparition of these faces in the crowds: /Petals on a wet, black bough.” My first reaction on reading Ezra Pound's 1916 poem In a Station of the Metro was that of outrage. Is it a poem by any definition? If it is a poem, how is it to be interpreted and understood? And finally, what are the implications that this poem has produced for the twentieth- century American literature?

My initial bewilderment subsided as I realized that there must a raison d'etre behind this apparently bizarre literary phenomenon. What I should do is to put this poem into the context of the American literary evolution and literary history. At least, the poem raises an important challenge. It requires me to understand some of the crucial changes that must be happening around the turn of the last century.

My subsequent studies indicate that this poem represents part of the larger literary movement known as Imagism, which included such theorists and practitioners as T. E. Hume, Hilda Doolittle, Amy Lowell, Ezra Pound, etc. The movement was a direct reaction to the late Victorian poetry, which had become extremely artificial, emptily “rhetorical” and “ornamental”。 To address such problems, it was necessary to loosen the metrical pattern and bring it back closer to the rhythms of ordinary speech. Consequently, the “imagist” movement had a great deal to do with promoting experiments with free verse, advocating among many creeds the need “to allow absolute freedom in the choice of subject” and “to produce poetry that is hard and clear, never blurred nor indefinite.” When Archibald MacLeish said in his Ars Poetica (1926) that “A poem should not mean / But be”, he had similar concerns in his mind. Imagism, minor as it is as a literary movement, triggered important changes in literary criticism, introducing the notion of internal studies as embodied by New Criticism to substitute the conventional critical practices.

The foregoing incident is but one instance that happened in my study of literature. For a Chinese student like me, it has at least two important implications. First, a literary work must not be treated in isolation. It interacts with what is written before it and after it and this historical perspective is one way in which we may add to our interpretation. Second, it is important to be acquainted with relevant literary theories when interpreting a given literary work.

A student majoring in English (& International Trade) at the English Department of _ University, I grew increasingly interested in literature during the second half of my undergraduate program. Of course, I was trained to be a student of English language in the first place and as such I received the standard academic training typical of a student of English major. For the first two years, I primarily had intensive trainings in basic English language skills by attending courses in advanced listening, writing, reading and oral communication. My distinguished academic performance is demonstrated by the four consecutive first-class and second-class scholarships I won from 1999 to 2003. In 2001, I was awarded the second prize in the campus-wide English composition contest and in 2002 the first prize in the translation contest. Another indicator of my scholastic achievements is the honor of Outstanding Graduate of _Province that I received by the time I completed my undergraduate program.

I started reading English novels as soon as I began my undergraduate program. But I primarily used it as a way to increase my vocabulary and to improve my reading comprehension. Since the second year in my undergraduate program, our curriculum included five major courses related to Anglo-American literature and culture: Selected Readings in English Literature, Selected Readings in American Literature, Introduction to European Culture, The History of English and American Literature, Selected Readings in English & American Fictions. Those courses provided me with a cultural and historical framework with which to understand Anglo-American literature and to know their interrelationships. I grew familiar with major authors and works in British and American literature and gained tentative knowledge of western critical approaches. Books like Literary Theory—An Introduction by Terry Eagleton and 20th Literary Criticism edited by David Lodge proved somewhat esoteric to me, but they allowed me to realize that there are important critical approaches very different from those in Chinese literature and different from conventional ones in western literature itself.

My defining interest in British and American Literature led me to write about T. S. Eliot and his poetry in my thesis Dull Roots Stirred by the Spring Rain—Meaning Through Imagery in T. S. Eliot's “Waste Land”(available upon request)。 In this thesis, I examined different groups of imagery that T. S. Eliot employed to externalize his central ideas and emotions. I also analyzed the theoretical justifications for his virtually excessive use of imagery by tracing it to his theory of “Objective Correlative” that he proposed in Hamlet and His Problems, a critical essay contained in The Sacred Wood (1920)。

In an extracurricular event, students in our department put on Shakespeare's drama Romeo and Juliet and I was the performer-director. Based on my own understanding of the play, I changed its tragic ending and made it a happy one by allowing the hero and the heroine to be resurrected and reunited. I believe that a love of such intensity should be fulfilled, otherwise it would be too pathetic.

In the last semester of my undergraduate program, I was recruited by my university to teach the course Appreciation of American Literature to students of non-English major. By applying my computer skills, I developed a series of courseware, covering different periods of American literature and illustrated by graphics and diagrams to make an otherwise difficult course interesting and easy to understand.

Nevertheless I am fully aware that my knowledge of American literature is far from sufficient. I need to receive more advanced education for the sake of a better career development. Therefore I plan to apply for a Graduate program in English at the University of _, concentrating on modern and contemporary American literature. Your program is nationally recognized (listed as among the top 10 in _ according to _) and it attacks me for its quality, small size and close mentorship. I am a student, graduated from BaoYang middle school, Nanning, GuangXi autonomous region, in 2006. Program Applied: Computer Science

Epicurus once said, "The joy of poverty is the most beautiful thing in the world." This has become a source of constant inspiration for me. Poverty is very real to me, so is the joy that is derived from my being able to devote myself to the study and the research of computer science.

My father passed away when I was just 14 and, with this, my family was plunged into sudden poverty. In order to save money to allow my younger sister continue her education, I relinquished my expensive undergraduate education and chose to attend a junior college instead, majoring in computer application. For three years, I made extra academic efforts as I had to work part-time to alleviate my family's financial burden. My GPA was ranked top five in my class, with particularly distinguished performance in mathematics. I was the sole junior college student who participated in the national contest in mathematical modeling for university students in 1996 and won the third prize in _ Province. Upon my graduation, I found employment with the Fuel Company of _ Province where I worked as its network engineer and chief manager. What was good about this job was that while it provided me with a stable income it allowed me to receive an on-the-job undergraduate education in computer science so that I ultimately fulfilled my aspiration of obtaining a Bachelor's degree in computer science.

However, the Bachelor's degree did not put an end to my academic pursuit. Realizing the importance and the necessity to constantly upgrade my professional knowledge in this age of rapid development in information technology, I found a graduate education in computer science would be vital for my further academic and career development. With due efforts in preparing for the entrance examination, I succeeded in enrolling in University of _ where I specialized in Computer Science and Application at the Faculty of Computer Science. Through my undergraduate and graduate programs, I have achieved the top third rankings in my overall GPA, laying a solid academic foundation through impressive performance in such core courses as Advanced Computer Network, Internet Technology, Multimedia Network Communication, Computer Science's Logic, Advanced Computer System Infrastructure, and Computer Network Infrastructure. This academic foundation makes possible my determination to become a computer specialist in my future career.

While making conscious efforts in my coursework, I have paid even greater attention to the improvement of my R & D ability. In the WLAN project for the _ Mansion, I collected extensive technical materials and made in-depth study of the WLAN technology. I independently designed the project plan that satisfied the particular needs of the client. In view of the inherent insecurity of WLAN, I proposed the security solution application to small-size business patterns. When evaluating the project, the relevant experts gave positive comments on my plan design, rating it as "technologically advanced, with reliable performance, and can provide guidance to the R & D work in relevant fields, and applicable to similar projects."

In another two projects-the development of the Computer Information Management System for both the Dean's Office and for School of Further Education of University of _, I conducted comprehensive research concerning network security technology, in particular the firewall technology. By undertaking extensive testing against the Ddos attacks, I gathered a large amount of first-hand data. Based on my experiences in those two projects, I have published four research papers, including The Standards of Firewall Procurement and the Prospect of Firewall Technology, in the national core journals and university journals like Computer Application Research. All of them have been well received.

Over the past few years, as a key project member, I have participated in, organized and implemented a total of 12 projects which involve financial software, MIS, network management system, e-commerce, industrial control and other fields. I have published a total of 10 research papers in a series of technical journals and my research achievements have captured the attention of the computer experts from the _ provincial academia. Last year I was invited to attend the 2002 International Symposium on Picture and Graphics in_ City.

Currently, I have come to the final stage of my Master's dissertation entitled Research on the WLAN Security Solution and its Realization. In this dissertation, I focus on the security mechanisms of WLAN, proposing that _ as a security solution can only be an alternative and that only the application of the true "point-to-point" mechanism can maximize network security at reasonable costs. My dissertation has an overall theoretical framework, supplemented by detailed plans and designs. In my repeated discussions with my supervisor concerning my dissertation, he has given his full support of my propositions. He has given special praises on my ideas regarding the renovation and development of the existing computer technology.

While perfecting my ability to carry out independent R & D projects, my past research experience has also enabled me to ferret out my own research interests for the future-Wireless Networking and Network Security. WLAN is one of the most important issues in the theoretical research and technical development of present-day computer science and its security mechanism is the key point. I have 4-year work experience as a network engineer and taught six courses on network and Internet technology. In my Master's program I have concentrated on computer network and distributive system and my dissertation is on WLAN and its security mechanism. For each of those two concentrations, I have participated in two research projects, thus I have adequate practical experience. In my 10 research papers, 6 are concerned with those two major fields, which fully testify to my theoretical buildup and my important research potential. All those constitute my important assets for more advanced academic pursuit, in which I expect to exploit them to the fullest possible extent.

I wish to apply for a Ph. D. program in computer science from your esteemed university because your program satisfies my wish for a full development of my research interests. My past education and research experience has fully convinced me that, as home of the world's modern computer science and technology, the United States is the ideal country that offers the advanced education and training that I am seeking.
