  I have a few strong passions in life; Indie music, Chelsea FC and literature. Since there are no university courses for the former two my decision concerning what to study at university is a simple one. ' The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones mad to live' was once said by Jack Kerouac in his work On The Road; the opportunity to experience living while studying amongst some of the finest literary minds in the country is overwhelmingly exciting for me. Ifeel that for too long I have been confined to my suburban prison where my talent for English Literature is being wasted amongst the desolate, uninspiring confines of Mid Bedfordshire. Moreover, sidestepping the risk of sounding arrogant, I have been told I possess a flair for the subject and my grades would certainly suggest so.

  The subjects I took for my AS levels were English Literature, History, Government and Politics and Communication Studies. For my A levels I decided to stop taking Communication Studies as I deemed it was best to focus on three subjects. Nevertheless, I believe that all three of these subjects have contributed more understanding to my knowledge of English Literature. History,for example, has aided my ability to pick out key points within text and also contextualise any written work I may be asked to study. Government and Politics has taught me many political philosophies that are evident in literary works, for example in Year 12 we studied the play Translations which is littered with Nationalist and Imperialist viewpoints. Communications Studies revealed to me a whole new dictionary of ideologies I wasn't previously aware of. Another benefit of taking these subjects is that they are all examined by both coursework and timed exams. This means that through hours of practice and familiarisation I have refined my exam techniques.

  Last year I was also fortunate enough to be selected to participate in a scheme organized by my school and the University of Bedford. It gave us the opportunity to get a glimpse of university life as I attended a number of lectures and achieved 15 points towards a potential degree through coursework I took part in. This was certainly an enlightening experience that will undoubtedly stand me in very good stead for the initial adjustment period that accompanies the beginning of university life. This year I have been selected to take part in the Advance Extension Award. Not only is this a fantastic boost to my student repertoire but also the course itself should further aid my ability to realize my full potential in the subject.

  When I achieve the required potential and finish my degree I have ambitions to utilise my skills as writer of some kind, preferably an author or a poet. My literary heroes are Thomas Hardy, John Keats, The Smiths lyricist Morrissey and my personal favourite Oscar Wilde. It is my dream to one day have my name illuminated in history as a writer who has inspired people in the same way these and other writers have inspired me.

  Lastly, to quote Wilde; 'consistency is the last refuge of the unimaginative'. As a student I am anything but consistent when it comes to the studying of literature. Of course by this I don't mean I can be as equally brilliant as awful, the Dorian Gray within me will tell you I am never awful, what I am articulating is that I bring my own ideas to the subject and do not simply regurgitate answers that are well documented already. That is not to say that I do not thoroughly research and acknowledge the criticism of the works I study but in my opinion English Literature is an innovative subject where interpretation and creativity should dominate. Studying English Literature at university offers me a chance to showcase my love for literature and flourish. The Smiths had a hit song once called Ask and the chorus goes 'ask me, ask me, ask me.' Please do.

  除了personal statement,你還會(huì)看到“statement of purpose”,甚至還有的學(xué)校稱之為“Personal statement of purpose”。它們差別并不大,如果非要說(shuō)出個(gè)差別,“personal statement”可以多說(shuō)一些自己的性格,比如自己的愛(ài)好,成長(zhǎng)等,而“statement of purpose”更偏重于學(xué)術(shù);而“personal statement of purpose”則更靈活一些了。

  個(gè)人陳述,(Personal Statement,以下簡(jiǎn)稱PS)是申請(qǐng)美國(guó)、加拿大、英國(guó)等西方國(guó)家的大學(xué)/研究生錄取時(shí)由申請(qǐng)人寫(xiě)的關(guān)于自我的一篇漫談體文章。當(dāng)然有的學(xué)校要求的文章題目不一定叫Personal Statement,如有的學(xué)校會(huì)讓你寫(xiě)動(dòng)機(jī)(Motivation)、興趣、經(jīng)歷等。

  RL

  關(guān)于RL在申請(qǐng)研究生課程時(shí),絕大部分學(xué)校都要求申請(qǐng)人提交2-3份推薦信,通常稱為Recommendation Letter(簡(jiǎn)稱RL)或Reference(多見(jiàn)于英國(guó))。

  CV

  關(guān)于CV簡(jiǎn)歷,顧名思義就是簡(jiǎn)單的經(jīng)歷羅列,英文通稱Curriculum Vitae或是Resume。一般來(lái)說(shuō),CV比Resume略為嚴(yán)格一些,更要突出一下本人的專業(yè)背景和實(shí)力。在申請(qǐng)大學(xué)、找工作等等,一般都需要它。

  ESSAY

  ESSAY可以翻譯成“小論文”。對(duì)于美國(guó)本科和MBA申請(qǐng)來(lái)說(shuō),ESSAY是非常重要的申請(qǐng)材料,其比重有時(shí)候會(huì)超過(guò)50%。很多學(xué)校都會(huì)要求學(xué)生提交3-5篇不等,其中1-2篇是主ESSAY。

  誤區(qū)一:一定要文筆好,Native的最好?

  這是被中國(guó)英語(yǔ)教育玩壞的一個(gè)例子。中國(guó)英語(yǔ)教育講究詞句的華麗,寫(xiě)的文章一定要美。

  在申請(qǐng)文章的要求中,太注重這方面,而忽視另外方面。

  筆者見(jiàn)過(guò)很多學(xué)生理解文章,他們甚至沒(méi)有弄清楚全文的意思,只對(duì)句子和詞的用法吹毛求疵。

  長(zhǎng)句為上,很多學(xué)生不管三七二一,就把幾個(gè)短句合在一起,用which,that等連成一團(tuán)。

  語(yǔ)言高點(diǎn)的學(xué)生,句子還通順;語(yǔ)言差點(diǎn)的學(xué)生,真是要命,完全不是原來(lái)的意思。

  其實(shí),一篇文章可看點(diǎn)很多:要表達(dá)事情的連貫性如何?文章中關(guān)于自己塑造是否充足?全文是否有主線?等等,考慮這些為上。至于Native writing,親們,沒(méi)能力的話,千萬(wàn)別碰。

  誤區(qū)二:文書(shū)就是高大上?

  很多學(xué)生認(rèn)為文書(shū),寫(xiě)的東西必然宏大上檔次,在文書(shū)中寫(xiě)進(jìn)自己的豐功偉績(jī),“又翻過(guò)了一座山,又越過(guò)了一條河”,通篇不停地在tell his achievements。

  這個(gè)是不合適的,眾多的文書(shū)寫(xiě)作教材的第一句話就是“show yourself instead of telling your stories”。

  你要用故事情節(jié)來(lái)表現(xiàn)你自己。簡(jiǎn)歷是羅列成就,那個(gè)人陳述是干嘛?換位思考,如果你是招生官,你會(huì)喜歡什么樣的學(xué)生?

  個(gè)人陳述相當(dāng)于是個(gè)面試,可以能夠看出學(xué)生除成就以外的東西,怎么想事,怎么解決問(wèn)題,怎么與他人相處,怎么理解這個(gè)社會(huì),文書(shū)能從小事見(jiàn)大人性,大道理,那是上乘之作。

  誤區(qū)三:文章不能承重之輕?

  很多人覺(jué)得申請(qǐng)文章很重要,于是,put all thoughts into it,進(jìn)入paranoid模式以致不能自拔,這是種危險(xiǎn)的狀態(tài)。

  什么事情,過(guò)就不好,這是古訓(xùn)。大家應(yīng)該要明白一個(gè)道理,世界沒(méi)有完美的事情,越偏執(zhí),越容易進(jìn)入自己的narrow perspective。

  如果時(shí)間允許,補(bǔ)充申請(qǐng)素材,做些和申請(qǐng)相關(guān)的活動(dòng)或者實(shí)習(xí),對(duì)自己提升的更多。

  誤區(qū)四:文書(shū)內(nèi)容寫(xiě)得越多越好?

  文書(shū)內(nèi)容寫(xiě)得越多越好?錯(cuò),這真是大錯(cuò)。

  為什么會(huì)有這樣的想法?這其中是有理由,這歸根于中國(guó)的教育,我們?cè)诖鹞目祁}目,比如政治題的時(shí)候,老師都會(huì)說(shuō),多寫(xiě)點(diǎn),給分會(huì)高點(diǎn)。我們被鼓勵(lì)將很多無(wú)用的信息放在文章中。

  然而申請(qǐng)文章不同,查看任何一所學(xué)校的申請(qǐng)文書(shū),要求的第一條往往就是concise。表達(dá)邏輯完整即可。

  與人溝通的專業(yè),比如商科申請(qǐng),對(duì)簡(jiǎn)歷要求是一頁(yè),多了沒(méi)人去看。同樣這個(gè)道理,在文書(shū)準(zhǔn)備過(guò)程中,得要想能不能用少點(diǎn)的字,去表達(dá)自己。很多時(shí)候,少即是多!

  誤區(qū)五:講究情感路線?

  中國(guó)人寫(xiě)作文講究寫(xiě)情,很多人都不會(huì)忘記寫(xiě)過(guò)很多關(guān)于我的爸爸媽媽爺爺奶奶的文章,窮極煽情的本領(lǐng)。

  中國(guó)的語(yǔ)文教育不講究分析,有句話說(shuō)“曉之以情,動(dòng)之以理”多半是前半部分看到的多。

  很多申請(qǐng)的學(xué)生,可能自己故事一般,背景一般,覺(jué)得只有把自己說(shuō)的可憐兮兮,對(duì)方招生官才會(huì)感動(dòng)。

  我們見(jiàn)到很多學(xué)生,開(kāi)頭寫(xiě)自己小時(shí)候怎么樣,孤兒寡母等等,其實(shí)大可沒(méi)有必要。

  不要讓這種情感成為招生官閱讀你文章的負(fù)擔(dān)。不要用情感乞討的方式來(lái)獲得錄取,這不是招生官喜歡看到的品質(zhì)。

  你要通過(guò)你的成熟,你的判斷,來(lái)描述自己對(duì)社會(huì)和對(duì)他人的認(rèn)識(shí)理解。
