When suddenly the word lanshouxianggu began trending on Chinese social-networking sites, many internet users were left scratching their heads.

Lanshouxianggu literally means blue thin chestnut mushroom but it made no sense to users. In case you are wondering what the whole fuss is about, a company in Shenzhen registered its name as blue thin chestnut mushroom, or lanshouxianggu,on Oct13. Just to make it more confusing, the company’s main business includes equipment manufacturing, trade and engineering.

It’s not the first time that internet memes(絡(luò)熱詞) have been registered as trademarks. On Aug 8, Chinese female swimmer Fu Yuanhui said “I’ve been using honghuangzhili” indicating she had used up all her strength. The word went viral. “Honghuangzhili”, which means pre-historical force, was registered as a trademark two days later.

The reference to lanshouxianggu comes from a video clip that went viral where a young man in Nanning, complains to his girlfriend in Mandarin but with his strong local accent. In the video, he cries out lanshouxianggu repeatedly in local accent, which in fact means upset(lanshou)and wanting to cry(xianggu). His accent and lyrical tone gave the video a phenomenon of humor and swept social media immediately. People photoshopped(圖像處理)his sad face on a blue small mushroom image.

Some of China’s popular websites did discover the fact that blue mushrooms do exist in the nature and were not merely magic of photoshop. Meet Entoloma hochstetteri, or sky blue mushroom, a kind of blue fungus(真菌)whose stem’s diameter is just 5 millimeter. It was first discovered in New Zealand. The country even selected the image of the blue mushroom on its banknote with face value of NZ to show the nature diversity in the country. In 2002, New Zealand post even released a stamp.

And for foodies who want to eat it: no, it is not edible and most species of this kind are poisonous.

  Are you lanshouxianggu now?

28.Which of the situation can be described by “Blue Mushroom”?

A.Tom was beaten by his rival and felt very depressed.

B.Mary had her phone stolen but thought nothing of it.

C.Ginar failed to pass the exam but was determined to work harder.

D.John won the first place and was excited to burst out crying.

29.Where can you mostly find the picture of literal blue mushroom?

A.On a note written by a New Zealander. B.On a newspaper in New Zealand.

C.On a bank bill in New Zealand. D.On a notice put up by a New Zealander.

30.What can we learn from the passage?

A.The blue mushroom is so delicious that everyone wants to buy it.

  B.“Honghuangzhili”was registered by Fu Yuanhui.

C.The blue mushroom doesn’t exist in the world.

D.The young man from the original video draws great attention.

31.What can be inferred from the passage?

A.New Zealanders first know the real meaning of “lanshouxianggu”.

B.“lanshouxianggu” was first popular through the Internet.

C.After the match, Fu Yuanhui was tired out.

D.All the trademarks are Internet memes.

Imagine you’ve just arrived in a new place and don’t know anybody yet. Someone smiles at you. You smile back. Your heart leaps because you realize this person could be a potential new friend. Your imagination runs wild, dreaming of all the fun times you’ll have together, chewing the fat over coffee, lunch and dinner.

You become so excited that in the first few minutes of talking you tell him/her everything—what you had for breakfast, how nervous you’re in this new place, and how you felt when your favorite goldfish died. But then you suddenly realize you’ve gone too far and that there’s no going back. You’ve committed the biggest social crime in the books—you over-shared.

Researchers have found over-sharing your personal information too quickly is a kiss of death to new friendships. A recent article highlights that it’s possible to establish a close bond with someone in as little as 45 minutes but this is only possible when the connection is built gradually by each person sharing a little bit more of themselves in turn. This theory was tested in an agreement called “Fast Friends” created by Authur Anopn, a professor from New York. In it, two people were put in a room together with three sets of 12 questions. The questions must be taken in order, with each person taking turns to answer them.

Questions in the first set were mild and only slightly personal, like “Would you like to be famous?” But questions in the next set were more personal, like “What’s your most terrible memory?” The final set of questions was deeply personal, like “When did you last cry in front of another person?” As Anon told, “If you disclose too much too fast, you put someone off.” It’s important that a relationship is built on mutual benefit and for each person to be talking. A key sign you’re over-sharing is when you’re the only one talking.

To be close to someone, it’s also necessary that you’re both willing to open up, but it’s important that each person gives the other space and time to do so. Giving away mutual information gradually is a good choice.

  32. To establish a close relationship with someone, you should __________.

  A. talk as much as possible B. share everything with him/her

  C. be the only one talking D. give him/her space and time

  33. The underlined part in Paragraph 1 most probably means ________.

  A. drinking tea or coffee B. talking happily and relaxedly

  C. eating the fat meat D. laughing happily

  34. According to the passage, which of the following questions is deeply personal?

  A. What is the weather like in your hometown?

  B. What is your dream in the senior high school?

  C. What do you think of our national football team?

  D. Do you remember the situation you felt stupid before your friends?

  35. Which can be the best title for the passage?

  A. Take Turns to Share Between New Friends B. Share Everything With Friends

  C. Be Talkative While Making New Friends D. Be Friendly to a Potential New Friend

  Dear Mr.Jones,

I expect you may be slightly surprised to receive a letter from someone living as near as your next-door neighbor, but I have to raise a subject so that it will be easier for me to discuss in writing.

You may have noticed that I have a 41 of apple trees running alongside the fence that42 our two gardens. You may also have taken 43 in the frequent sight of your two children 44 on your lawn directly by the fence. And you may also have 45 that my apple trees, so to speak, bend over the fence and seem to 46 your children with interest.

It is only natural that your children should sometimes seem to return that 47 . And it is not only natural, 48 , I acknowledge, quite legal, for them occasionally to show that interest by 49 all the apples that hang over on 50 side of the fence.

But to be plain with you, Mr. Jones, I am tired 51 seeing your children, day after day, tear the branches off the side of every one of my apple trees, and leave my trees looking 52 a battle had been fought on one side of them. I am, if anything, even more tired of waking up these fine autumn 53 , to find even the apples on my side of the fence 54 in number. I know this is the work of your children, since last night I was woken at midnight by the 55 they were making 56 one of my trees, and (as they may have told you)chased them home.

While I am on the subject, I am at least grateful to you for keeping your bonfires on the far side of your garden this year. Last year neither I 57 your children had any apples, because the smoke from your bonfire destroyed all the flowers 58 the apples had time to form. I very much hope that next year--for the first time since I came to this village--I shall have my apples, and your children 59 have theirs and that the sight of the line of apple trees will be 60 pride to us both.

M: Oh Yeah! And you couldn’t stop talking about kimchi for weeks.

W: OK,OK...So, shall we go to Japan , then? I will look for tickets online.

Hopefully, they won’t be too expensive.

  M: Great, I can’t wait !

Text 7 M: Becky, can I speak to you for a moment in my office?

W: Yes, sir, Is everything all right ?

M: All right ? Everything is wonderful ! You put up some amazing numbers

this year. Profits are increasing thanks to that plan of years !

W: Thank you, sir. I’m just trying to do my best for the company.

M; No need to be modest. What you did was brilliant. I’m promoting you !

W: Promoting me? Wow, I never expected that. What about the Johnson

  project?

M: The project you’re in charge of ? We can get someone else on that. I want

you to work that magic of yours.

W: I will continue to do my best, sir.

M: I expect nothing less from someone as talented as you, Becky.

Text 8 W: Can you believe last night’s game ?

M: It was almost too good to be true . No one expected our team to win by

  that many points !

W: No one expected our team to win at all !

M: I’m a little upset , I couldn’t travel to the game with Dave and Billy. They

really wanted me to go with them.

  W: Why didn’t you go ?

M: I had to study for three different final exams. No time for any football

games at all this week !

W: Well, maybe you can go next year. I hope we can get back to the

  championship next season.

M: I hope so, too ! I’m graduating this spring. I should be able to attend a

whole bunch of games next year.

W: I hope we can go together.

M: But you will be in school then. Won’t you have too much homework to

  do ?

W: Didn’t I tell you ? I’m going to take summer classes and try to graduate

  early !

M: I had no idea. Good luck with that. I heard that summer school classes are

  more difficult, though.

  Text 9 M: Hey, Mom. What’s up ?

W: Hi, Chris. Your father and I are coming homing tomorrow. Can you pick

us up at the train station in the afternoon ?

M: What time will you arrive ?

W: We land around noon. So, we should be at the train station by 1:30 p.m.

M: Oh, but I have to pick up Sandy from the vet at 1:30 p.m. I won’t be able

to get to the station until 2:00 p.m. at the earliest.

  W: What’s wrong with Sandy ?

M: Nothing too serious. The vet said she might have caught a cold or something.

W: Oh, I’m sure she will be OK. She’s a strong girl.

M: Thanks. Now, what should we do about tomorrow ?

W: Let me think... Your dad and I can just eat lunch at the airport. That way,

no one will feel rushed to be anywhere. We’ll plan to see you around

  2:00 p.m. at the station.OK ?

  M: Works for me.

W: Oh, hang on a second. Where are we going to sit ? If you are bringing

Sandy in the car, we won’t have room to sit in the back seat.

M: That’s true. Also, what about your luggage ?

W: Son, can’t you put off picking up Sandy until later in the afternoon ?

That would make everything a whole lot easier .

M: I will call the vet and see if that’s possible, I’ll call you right back.

  W: OK.

  Text 10

Well, folks, it’s time for the weekly weather report. We have a lot of different kinds of weather coming at us over the next several days. On Monday and Tuesday, the weather will be just as pleasant as it has been lately. Warm days, cooler nights, with a light wind from the ocean coming across the hills: beautiful late summer weather ---so get outside and enjoy it ! By Tuesday evening , though, the weather will turn. We’ll be getting the first of the autumn rains.

The storm system will come down from the north, from the direction of Fremont. Our area will be hit hardest with rain---we should receive up to an inch of rain overnight ! With the storm will come much cooler weather. You’d better pack your summer clothes away, because you won’t need them for a long time ! By Friday morning , all the wet weather will have passed. But the temperatures will drop even further into the weekend. And since Gilroy is not very close to the sea, we can expect the weather to remain cool for quite some time. But if we get lucky, we’ll have hot weather once more before winter. Late September and and early October generally bring a couple of weeks that feel like summer.
