  Denali National Park,Alaska

  History

Within Denali National Park,The Toklat River will always have a special significance ,as it was the location where naturalist Charles Sheldon built a cabin and was so moved that he fought to preserve the land. He moved back east and spent nine years lobbying (游說(shuō)) to create Alaska’s first national park.

  When to Visit

To avoid the crowds, visit in June, but keep in mind that there are up to 21 hours of sunlight in Alaska in summer. If it seems like a bit much for your taste, try visiting in late August or September.

If you visit to climb Mount McKinley, May and early June are the best times to climb.

  Major Attractions

Sable Pass is a prime spot to view grizzly bears. C losed to off-road foot traffic, the area is popular for bears feeding on berries, roots, and even occasionally on other mammals.

Beginning at just below the summit of Mount McKinley, Muldrow Glacier flows 35 miles through a gorge and across the tundra. Twice in the last hundred years, the Muldrow has surged (涌動(dòng)), most recently in the winter of 1956-1957.

  Accommodation

Five campgrounds are located within the park, and many are open from late spring to early fall.Note: reservations are strongly recommended during summer. Riley Creek campground is open all year round, and all but two (Sanctuary and Wonder Lake) offer RV(可供居住的大篷車) sites.

On my walk home one night, I saw a man lying on the ground. One or two people noticed him, but walked on by. I decided to stop and check if he was OK. When I spoke to him, he said some words I couldn’t make out. From his breath it was obvious he was drunk. I tried to speak to him until I got his name — Carlton. I asked him where he lived, and he told me a number and a road name that I recognized. It was only a ten-minute walk from here.

Part of me wanted to help, but there was also fear arising. He was much bigger than me, six feet three inches or so. In the end I decided to go for it and help him walk home. I got him to his feet, he held onto my shoulders and arm, and we walked slowly to his home. The walk took about forty minutes instead of the usual 10. Every few steps he stopped to pull his trousers back up because he didn’t have a belt. Throughout the walk, I felt a constant anxiety.

Halfway to his home , he stopped, took out his phone from his pocket and then handed it to me. I asked him why he was doing that, and he said, “To test your loyalty.” That moment struck me. All this time I was worried about what he might do to me. And it meant I didn’t have the ability to empathize (感同身受) with what he was feeling. He was probably feeling the same anxiety. So when he handed me his phone, as a sign of trust, I felt touched and honored at this act of courage. We walked the rest of the way to his home. When we got c lose, before I got to see the door number, I noticed he recognized his home. When we walked up, sure enough, it was the door number he had told me. I felt a sense of relief. I handed him back his phone, he thanked me and I made my way home, now with a lesson in empathy.

The history of vacuum cleaners(真空吸塵器) in the UK dates back to the early 1900s.Hubert Cecil Booth started the first vacuum cleaner company in the UK, known as the British Vacuum Cleaner Company. It wasn’t long, however, before William Henry Hoover, who had already experienced success with his vacuum cleaners in America, made headway in the vacuum cleaner market in the UK and became more successful than Booth.

Hoover’s vacuum cleaners in the UK became such a success that ‘to hoover’ quickly became equal to vacuuming. Some of the earliest domestic vacuum cleaners in the UK used simple reusable cloth bag designs whereby the vacuum cleaner simply collected dust in the bag. Once the bag was full, you could empty and re-attach it to th e vacuum cleaner.

For decades after their introduction, vacuum cleaners in the UK were a luxury item that only the upper class could afford. After World War II,however, they became common among the middle class. This was especially true for vacuum cleaners in the UK, because the popularity of carpets means sweeping is not an easy or effective means of carpet cleaning.

In 1952, Hoover made the Constellation available to the public for the first time. Hoover designed it so that people could place the vacuum cleaner in the centre of the room and then work around it. After about 20 years of selling these vacuum c leaners in the UK, Hoover stopped the Constellation in 1975.

Advances to upright and cylinder(氣缸) vacuum cleaners in the UK continued, enabling vacuum cleaners to become more efficient and effective. The 1990s saw the introduction of the first bagless domestic vacuu m cleaners in the UK. Despite many industry fears consumers would not be prepared to pay the high price, bagless vacuum cleaners became a big success in the UK.

As for the f uture, vacuum cleaners in the UK are expected to become even more energy-efficient.

28.What can be inferred from the first paragraph?

29.What was the cloth bag on the earliest domestic vacuum cleaners used for?

  A.Decorating the vacuum cleaners.

B.Making the vacuum cleaners more efficient.

  C.Li ghtening the vacuum cleaners.

  D.Collecting dust.

30.What was the most remarkable characteristic of the Constellation?

A.It was only used by the upper class.

B.Its design allowed the user to work around it.

C.It was upright and it had a cylinder added to it.

D.Its price was extremely high at the time.

31.We can learn form the passage that bagless vacuum cleaners .

A.were so popular that they could fulfill all UK customers’ demands

B.were the most energy-efficient vacuum cleaners.

C.were not accepted by UK customers

D.were expensive when they made their first public appearance in the UK

Cancer patients could increase their chance of survival and help stop their cancer spreading by survival and help stop their cancer spreading by taking aspiring, new research suggests. A daily pill was found to increase the chance of surviving cancer by 20 percent.

Scientists at Cardiff University made the discovery after analysing a wealth of available date from studies of some cancers. They found that patients who took low-dose aspirin in addition to their usual treatment reduced their likelihood of dying, or the cancer spreading, by one fifth over five years.

“There is a growing body of evidence that taking aspirin is of significant benefit in reducing some cancers,” said Professor Peter Elwood, from the University of Cardiff, who led the research. “while we know a low dose of aspirin has been shown to reduce the possibility of catching cancer, its role in the treatment of cancer remains uncertain. As a result, we set out to conduct a search of all the scientific literature.”

The team collected date from five trials and 42 studies. Although a known risk associated with taking aspirin regularly is bleeding in the gut(腸子), the researchers found no evidence of this being serious or life-threatening. Researchers say the study highlights the need for trials to show if aspirin should be recommended alongside current cancer treatments.

Professor Elwood added: “While there is a desperate need for more detailed research to prove our review and to obtain evidence on less common cancers,we’d urge patients diagnosed with cancer to speak to their doctor about our findings so they can make an informed decision as to whether or not they should take a low dose of aspirin as part of their cancer treatment.”

Baroness Delyth Morgan, Chief Executive at Breast Cancer Now, said: “This study adds significant weight to the idea that a drug as simple and cheap as aspirin could help treat breast and other cancers.

“Clinical trials are going on to confirm whether aspirin could be added to routine treatments for breast cancer. Further research is needed to understand exactly which patients would benefit from aspirin and enable us to direct it to the most appropriate individuals.”

32.What can happen if patients take aspirin regularly?

  A.It can stop cancers spreading.

B.It can cause bleeding in the gut.

C.It can strengthen their immune system.

D.It can increase the risk of cancer.

33.The purpose of the study is to________.

A.prove that aspirin can reduce the incidence of cancer

B.test the potential risks and benefits of taking aspirin

C.figure out which patients should take aspirin[來(lái)源:學(xué),科,網(wǎng)]

D.verify whether aspirin could be added to cancer treatments.

34.What does the underlined word in the fifth paragraph probably mean?

  A.Sensible.B.Acceptable.C.Public.D.Successful.

35.Which of the following is NOT true, according to the passage?

A.The scientists made the discovery by analysing a mass of data.

B.The scientists have confirmed aspirin could help treat breast and other cancers.

C.The scientists have found aspirin can be used to assist in cancer treatment.

D.The scientists have to do further research into aspirin.

In our life, we will be nice to another people, while when facing our parents, we are patient and even argue with them. People always think their parents don’t understand them and refuse to talking to them. They show the worst temper to the ones who love them, and they show their kindest face to stranger. It is a sad thing, and the reason which people show their badness to the dearest is that people just get used for the presentation of their relatives. They are know in their hearts that their parents won’t leave them, no matter which they do. People neglected the fact that our parents are the dearest persons in the world, so we should be nice to our parents.
