  Rubber Fish

My friend and I were sitting on our very fancy beach chairs under the beach umbrella while watching our girls playing in the surf on that summer morning. About 50 yards from us, a man--maybe in his late 50s--was fishing with gigantic poles.

After running for a while, the girls approached him and watched with their little mouths hanging open as he cast the lines. He smiled at them. They ran back to us-- all except my three-year-old, Alice. Instead, she sat down next to the man.

“Alice! Come here! Play with your friends!” I yelled, very aware that my speeches about not talking to strangers weren’t working. Hearing me, Alice ran over to me and grabbed a shovel(鏟子). Then she looked me in the eye,” I want to be with the man.” She ran back, sat down next to him again, and started digging.

I watched them like there was a hidden camera in the lifeguard chair filming the man for America’s Most Wanted, every few seconds darting my head toward my five-year-old to make sure she hadn’t been swept out to sea, then back to Alice to make sure there was no contact. Just a man fishing. A girl sitting.

In the second I’d glanced away, Alice had started talking. Her mouth was moving. She was probably telling the man where we lived and how her father was away on business and how her mother sometimes let her ride bikes with her sister in the driveway alone. He nodded, then laughed.

A few seconds later, she ran back to us, waving something very shiny and slimy. “ Look, Mommy! A toy fish!” It was, indeed, a yellow rubber toy fish, which must have been what he was using for bait (魚餌). And he’d given it to Alice. The three other girls were impressed, and they didn’t try to hide how jealous they were. They all reached for the fish. Alice looked at me for help, then at the man, then back at me.

“My friend gave me that fish!” she said. Tears were fast approaching. Just as I didn’t know how to solve the problem, suddenly, there he was: the man, standing right next to us. He was holding three more fish. He handed them to each of the girls. “ Thank you,” the girl said, with their face shining like the sun. There is evil in the world ... but there is also the lesson for mothers to learn that only three-year-olds could teach them. The man waved at us and walked back to his poles.

60.The author began to feel worried when _____.

  A. Alice accepted a gift

  B. Alice sat near the man

  C. the girls played in the surf

  D. the girls watched the man fishing

61.Why did the man give the girls three more rubber fish?

  A. To teach them about baits.

  B. To attract their attention.

  C. To stop them from disturbing him.

  D. To balance the demands among them.

62.What is the lesson the author learned from her kid?

  A. There is kindness in strangers in the world.

  B. Kids should have the chance to be close to nature.

  C. There is no need to blame kids when they’re playing.

  D. Kids should be told not to let out private information.

  Brand Integration

If you are watching television while using a second screen--like a smartphone or table--research suggests that some of the most expensive marketing messages aimed at you are missing their mark. While the trend of “second screen” use has become popular, a study at Ohio Star University, Columbus, shows that viewers have trouble recalling brands they see on TV if they are using such machines.

“Viewers don’t even remember that your brand was there on TV because they were busy posting on Facebook or Twitter or reading e-mail,” notes Jonathan Jensen, who led the study as a doctoral student in sport management in the Department of Human Sciences, “ This should provide a measure of a pause to brand marketers who are spending a lot of money to get their products integrated into live sporting events and other TV shows.”

The problem caused by second screens is a big one for brands. A report by the business management consultant firm Accenture, New York, found that 87% of consumers use a second screen while watching TV. This research examined whether viewers could recognize and recall brand names that announcers mentioned during a college football game broadcast.

This was not about advertisements--it was about “brand integration,” or the promotion of products during the actual broadcast, achieved via sponsorships of events. For example, in this study, an insurance company logo was put up on nets behind the goal posts when field goals and extra points were kicked. The insurance firm also was mentioned as a sponsor by the announcers during the game.

“With digital video recorders used in more than 50%of families, there’s no guarantee anymore that people are watching commercials, but marketers thought that if they could get their brands mentioned and shown during the broadcast they would have an effective way to reach consumers, but now with so many people using second screens, even brand integration is not effective,” Jensen points out.

Consistent with the cognitive(認知) theory, these results confirm that people process and remember information better if they receive it both through audio and visual channels. This is a key when people may be using two different screens at one time. “If consumers aren’t taking in information using both the audio and visual subsystems at the same time, they’re not going to process and remember the information as effectively.”

  63. What is the problem caused by second screens?

  A. Viewers lose belief in advertisements.

  B. Viewers ignore product trademarks.

  C. Viewers give up television shows.

  D. Viewers have bad memory

64.Which of the following is brand integration?

  A. Products appearing in scenes in the movie.

  B. Programs using audio and visual channels.

  C. Information posted in the newspaper.

  D. Brands advertised by famous people.

  65. What does Jonathan Jensen think of the effect of brand integration?

  A. Obvious. B. Harmful. C. Useless. D. Unknown

66.Where is the passage probably taken from?

  A. A financial report.

  B. An advertising textbook.

  C. A commercial survey.

  D. A business magazine.
