Small Changes Make a Big Difference

As adolescents, having a meaningful impact on the world can seem like an impossible task. Changing the world does not only mean finding a cure for cancer, or finding the origin of humanity, but recycling a piece of paper as well. 16

  Recycle

According to a report, 63 million newspapers go out to customers every day and of those 44 million are thrown away. 17

The age of technology constantly creates new phones, iPads, or new computers. Many people will stand in line for hours if not days to get their hands on the new piece of technology, but about 75% of the old devices sit in the back of a drawer collecting dust. By taking them to the local stores that collect them they go to people in need.

Go vegetarian (素食者) one day a week

18 The Environmental Defense concludes that if the entire population omitted one meal of chicken, the amount of carbon dioxide accumulated would be the same amount if more than half a million cars were taken off U.S. roads.

  Abandon bottled water

Most people drink bottled water because of the common conception that bottled water is healthier than regular tap water. 19 All that is done extra is that it goes through a filter (過濾器). Companies do not need to list where they get the water, how they purify the water, or what chemicals their plastic water bottles contain. 20 Therefore, 1.5 million tons of plastic goes to landfills.

Keep in mind what Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

  A. Environmental protection has become a major part in our life.

  B. Here are some astonishing facts on going vegetarian for only one day.

  C. Having more vegetables does good to our health.

  D. As a result, 90% of the plastic bottles do not get recycled.

  E. Actually, 25% of bottled water comes from regular tap water.

  F. Recycling the Sunday newspaper alone we could save half a million trees a week.

  G. Here are three simple ways adolescents can go green and change the world.

  第二節(jié) 書面表達(dá)

  Dear Jackson,

On behalf of our class, I would like to share with you what we think of your teaching in the past month.

We all think highly of your lectures because you have taught us that learning English is not for a score but for pleasure. However, some problems also arise, causing some trouble to our learning efficiency. First, you speak English so quickly that some of us fail to catch what you say. Second, you prepared a list of books for us to read after class, but unfortunately, a few books are hard to obtain. Last, we don’t get used to your brief explanation.

We all hope that after all these problems are worked out, the class will be more interesting and fruitful in the days to come.

  Yours,

  Li Hua
