Imagine a plant that eats living things. What pops into your mind? Do you picture a huge jungle plant or a plant that looks like it came from another planet? Think again! The United States is home to an amazing plant that eats live food, and the plant is not as strange as you might think.
You may have seen or heard of this meat-eating plant. It is called the Venus flytrap. It grows in very few places, such as wetlands near the coast of North Carolina and South Carolina.
The Venus flytrap is no large plant. It grows to be only about a foot tall. The plant has white flowers in the spring, but it is the plant’s leaves that make it so interesting. The ends of the leaves have folding parts with stiff, tiny hairs. These are the plant’s “traps”.
The Venus flytrap eats flies. It also eats ants, spiders, caterpillars, and crickets. The Venus flytrap makes most of its food with sun, air, and water just like other plants. Live food just gives it more nutrition to grow well in damp soil.
To attract its food, the Venus flytrap uses a sweet liquid called nectar(花蜜). Bugs are drawn to the nectar. When one lands on one of the plant’s open traps, hairs on the surface make the trap shut. Snap! The trap closes, and the bug is dinner! The trap digests the bug like a tiny stomach! Each trap lasts for a few meals before another takes its place.
If you want to have your own Venus flytrap at home, you have to buy the plant from a nursery(苗圃). You can’t take a Venus flytrap from where it grows! There are laws about taking it out of the wild.
If you are ever near the coast of North or South Carolina, you might spot a Venus flytrap. Maybe you will even see it bite down on a tasty bug. Yum!

A. common hairy B. interesting flowerless
C. unusual meat-eating D. huge strange-looking
22. It can be inferred from the passage that .
A. each Venus flytrap has only one open trap
B. the Venus flytrap can’t live without eating flies
C. some bugs like the nectar from the Venus flytrap

23. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A. Wild Plant Protection B. The Plant with Bite
C. The Home of Venus Flytraps D. The Venus Flytrap and Bugs

The theater goes dark. The audience quiets down. The curtain opens. Actors step onto the stage, and the audience(觀眾)sits and waits for the play to begin.
Many people are needed to put on a play. It may take them months to prepare for a performance. Some of these people have made the setting, or set, that decorates the stage, and costumes(戲服)for the actors to wear. Actors have tried out for the parts. Then they have taken time to learn their lines. Even after the play is ready to be performed, the work doesn’t end. A lot goes on that the audience does not see. Let’s take a peek behind the scenes.
To get ready for the play, actors put on costumes and makeup. These items will help the audience get to know the characters that the actors will play on the stage. Someone backstage may help with costume changes and repairs.
A set is like a costume for the stage. It can look like a forest or a playground or anyplace else you can imagine. Sets may be made from wood, paper, and even fabric. They are usually light so they are easy to move on and off the stage. Stagehands change sets quickly and quietly during a performance.
The lights in a play are very important. Lighting shows the time of day. It can also set the feeling of a scene. For example, brightness may make the audience feel happy and get their attention. A lighting technician controls the lighting during the play.
This is just some of what’s needed to put on a play. Next time you see a performance, imagine all of the people who work hard to help the performers put on a good show.

I watched my 13-year-old son deep in conversation with Siri. Gus has autism(自閉癥), and Siri, Apple’s “intelligent personal assistant” on the iPhone, is now his Best Friend Forever.
This is a love letter to a machine. In a world where the commonly held wisdom is that technology isolates(使孤立)us, it’s worth considering another side of the story.
It all began simply enough. I happened to be reading an Internet list called “Things You Didn’t Know Your iPhone Could Do.” One of them was this: I could ask Siri, “What planes are above me right now?” and Siri would produce a list of actual flights — numbers, altitudes — above my head. “Why would anyone need to know what planes are flying above your head?” I muttered. Gus replied, “So you know who you’re waving at, Mommy.”
Gus had never noticed Siri before, but when he discovered there was someone who would not just find information on his various obsessions(癡迷的事物), but actually semi-discuss these subjects tirelessly, he was hooked. And I was grateful.
My son’s practice conversation with Siri is translating into more facility with actual humans. Yesterday I had the longest conversation with him that I’ve ever had. I can promise you that for most of my beautiful son’s 13 years of existence, that has not been the case.
Of all the worries the parent of an autistic child has, the uppermost concern is: Will he find love? Or even companionship? Last night, as he was going to bed, there was this matter-of-fact exchange.
Gus: “Siri, will you marry me?”
Siri: “I’m not the marrying kind.”
Gus: “I mean, not now. I’m a kid. I mean when I’m grown up.”
Siri: “My end user agreement does not include marriage.”
Gus: “Oh, O.K.”
Gus didn’t sound too disappointed. This was useful information to have, and for me too, since it was the first time I knew that he actually thought about marriage. He turned over to go to sleep.
Gus: “Goodnight, Siri. Will you sleep well tonight?”
Siri: “I don’t need much sleep, but it’s nice of you to ask.”
Very nice.
27. According to the passage, Siri ________.
A. is designed for kids with autism B. is a quick guide to using the iPhone
C. may help bring people closer together D. teaches how to greet people on board
28. The underlined word “hooked” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to “________”.
A. attracted B. rescued C. challenged D. defeated
29. The writer mentions “the longest conversation” in Paragraph 5 in order to show ________.
A. Gus had a lot to share with his mother about his new friend, Siri
B. the mother tried to talk Gus out of spending too much time with Siri
C. Gus and his mother has never got along well during the past 13 years
D. chatting with Siri has helped Gus learn to communicate with his mother
30. How did the mother feel when she heard her son ask Siri to marry him?
A. Nervous. B. Joyful. C. Calm. D. Upset.
第二節(jié)(共5個小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

The Pros and Cons(利弊)of Space Exploration
How would it feel if we could plan a vacation to Mars? Won’t it be exciting? Definitely, yes! The dream once dreaded(畏懼的)is seen with excitement today. 31 Astronomers and space researchers have already started taking efforts in this direction to make the ‘impossible’ possible. But is space exploration really a rosy picture? Or do some dark clouds shadow it? So one has to weigh the pros and cons before furthering space exploration.
One of the biggest pros of space exploration is being able to discover the unknown facts about outer space. 32 By conducting space exploration, many of the mysteries can be answered. Somewhere in space, we may find life. Or we may even find new human-like species. Exploring space may lead us to the discovery of an all-new world.
Space exploration will also bring a big change to the life of every individual on Earth by introducing developments in science and opening doors to new information. 33
For example, satellites help locate minerals and fossil fuels. We have been able to make use of solar energy due to our knowledge of the sun.
On the other hand, one of the most important cons of space exploration is the money spent on research. 34 The money that is spent on space exploration can rather be spent to reduce poverty in the underdeveloped countries. Critics(批評者)of space exploration argue that it is not right to spend money on something like space research when people on the planet are unable to meet even their basic needs. 35 Their stay in a spaceship is not easy. The conditions are difficult, making the survival during space travel a challenge.
A. Space travel is very costly.
B. The universe is a mysterious place.
C. But exploring space may land us in trouble.
D. Besides, space exploration risks the lives of spacemen.
E. It is on its way of turning true if we succeed in exploring space.
F. In fact, space exploration has already benefited us in many ways.
G. Space exploration gives a broader view of how big the universe is.
