Former world number one Maria Sharapova has exposed she failed a drug test at the Australian Open. The Russian, 28, tested positive for meldonium (米屈肼), a substance she has been taking since 2006 for health issues. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) said the five-time Grand Slam champion would be temporarily suspended from March 12. Sportswear company Nike said it was cutting its relationship with her until the investigation was complete.

“I did fail the test and take full responsibility for it,” said Sharapova, who won Wimbledon as a 17-year-old in 2004.

Sharapova, who lives in Florida, was charged on March 2. “It is very important for you to understand that, for 10 years, this medicine was not on Wada's banned list and I had been legally taking that medicine for the past 10 years,” she said. “But, on January 1, the rules changed and meldonium became a prohibited substance, which I had not known.”

She added that Wada had sent her an email on December 22 informing her of changes to the banned list, but she had failed to “click” on the link that would have detailed the prohibited items.

As for her sponsors, it remains to be seen if others follow the lead of Nike, who said it was “saddened and surprised by the news.”

Women's Tennis Association (WTA) president Steve Simon said he was “very saddened” at Sharapova's failed test. “Maria is a leader and I have always known her to be a woman of great integrity(正直),” he added. “As Maria acknowledged, it is every player's responsibility to know what they put in their body and to know if it is permissible. Far away, huge and shaped over thousands of years by the seas and glaciers, Norway's breathtaking natural scenery leaves many visitors in awe(敬畏).

Adding to its appeal is the fact that the country has once again been selected as the best place in the world to live for health and social prosperity (繁榮). This has been true for 12 years in a row according to the United Nations' 2016 Human Development Index, released on Dec 14.

“Its outdoor lifestyle, which makes the most of the mountains and fjords (峽灣), undoubtedly plays a key role in the country's health,” said the Independent newspaper.

In the summer, Norwegians go hiking, camping, picnicking and fishing. In the winter, it's time to play in the snow. As the Telegraph newspaper noted, “Many Norwegians grow up on the slopes and can ski like professional athletes.”

The Norwegian diet is another factor in Norwegians' good health. A typical homemade meal is low in sugar, fat and salt, and is usually made of fish, meat, potatoes, berries, whole-grain bread and vegetables. “Dining out is relatively uncommon,” Women's Health Magazine noted. “There is not a big fast-food culture and there are no ready meals.”

Even though fast food restaurants have been set up in the country, to discourage unhealthy eating, the government has put higher duties on fast food and soft drinks since 1981.

The mentality(心態(tài)) of the Norwegian people has also played an essential role in the country's health and social success. The Danish-Norwegian novelist Aksel Sandemose once wrote down the Law of Jante, which shows important ideas in Norwegian culture: modesty, collectivity and social equality. Overall, the law suggests that no one is better than another person, and that people should not brag (吹噓) about their achievements.

“You shouldn't believe that you are more than you are. This attitude deeply is in our social DNA,” Robert Mellberg, a tech entrepreneur told the BBC.

  31. What are Norwegians' health secrets?

  C. Beautiful scenery, ready meals, and the attitude

When it comes to scary animals, the answers are often more or less the same -snakes are among the most dreadful one for the majority of us. However, most of us have never been bitten by a snake. So does this mean we are born with a fear of certain things?

Scientists have been actively looking into it for a long time. For example, studies have suggested that babies find live animals much more interesting than animal - like toys. This interest continues even if these animals are snakes.

A study published in Psychological Science in 2008 seemed to show that snakes did have different impact on babies. When scientists presented babies with animals videos along with random sounds happy or frightened human voices, they found that babies looked at snakes for longer than any other animals however the voices sounded.

Now a team from Rutgers University in New Jersey, US has tried to challenge the idea that babies are born with a fear of snakes. According to the BBC, the researchers measured babies' physiological (生理的) responses as they watched videos of snakes paired with both fearful voices.

Scientists then set out to surprise the babies to see how they would react. They were presented with an unexpected bright flash of light as they watched videos. As the BBC explained, a surprise like this would be more intense if the babies were already scared just like when we watched scary films and jump more if we are already scared.

However, according to their findings published recently in the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, babies surprised responses were not bigger when watching a video of a snake, even when it was shown with a fearful voice. Their heart responses were also lower, which also made it seem that babies were not scared.

The fact above prove that children do not have an inborn fear of snakes. Even if previous studies suggested that babies have different responses to snakes, it isn't necessarily related to fear.

  32. The underlined word “it” in the second paragraph refers to .

  A. why most people are afraid of snakes

  B. why babies are more interested in live animals than animal toys

  C. why people think snakes are scary animals

  D. whether people are born with a fear of certain things

  33. In paragraph 3, babies' looking at snakes longer than any other animals shows that .

  A. snakes have no impact on babies

  B. snakes aroused babies' interest

  C. snakes frightened babies

  D. snakes did have a different impact on babies

  34. Which of the following tells us that babies were not scary of snakes?

  A. Babies showed more interest in live animals.

  B. Babies' heart response was lower.

  C. Babies' surprised response was bigger.

  D. Babies' natural curiosity was stronger.

  35. We can infer from the passage that .

  A. snakes are not so dreadful

  B. babies are not afraid of animals

  C. a sense of fear is acquired after one's birth

  D. babies are braver than adults

The Senior Three students of our school are going to hold a New Year’s Eve to welcome the coming of the year 2017. I’m writing to sincerely invite you and your family to our party, where I think we can spend a wonderful time together.

The party will be held on the third floor of our school library. It will start at 7 p. m. and last about 2 hours. At the party the students will exchange New Year gifts, expressing their best wishes to each other. Besides, students who are good at singing, dancing or playing musical instruments are expected to give various performances. By the way, they may also bring their delicious food to share with others. I’m sure everyone will be interested in it.

We would appreciate it if you can participate in the party with your family. And would you please prepare some performances? We’re looking forward to your coming.

  Yours,

  Li Hua
