One of the biggest social issues in Japan is the increasingly low marriage rate among young people and the small birth rate, which led to an aging and eventually shrinking population. Most young Japanese women simply don’t seem interested in having many children.

Now what began in Japan is happening globally. As David Brooks wrote, birth rate is becoming smaller in much of the world, from Iran — 1.7 births rate per woman — to Russian, where low birth rates connected with high death rates mean the population is already shrinking. And this includes US, which has long had higher birth rates than most developed nations. Aging countries will face the burden of caring for large elderly populations without a larger resource of young workers.

Iit's true that global aging is going to present some major challenges. Who will take care of the elderly? Will an older world be less active and slower to change and adapt? Iit's all true. Sometimes I worry about a coming generational war over resources, just as I worry about how I will take care of my own parents in their old age, just as I worry about who might take care of me.

But here,s the thing: an older world may have less pressure on the environment. As we all know, the environment is the real victim of overpopulation.

So maybe a world that grows slower and grows older will put less pressure on the environment, and buy us a few more years to ensure our energy use, along with our birthrates, reaches a sustainable (可持續(xù)的)level. After all, we’re supposed to get smarter as we get older. Hopefully that holds true for the planet as well.

  24. The population issue in Japan was mentioned to_.

  A. show young people’s preference to marriage

  B. emphasize the revolution of Japanese women

  C. indicate the deeper cause of Japan’s depression

  D. introduce the topic of global birth rate becoming smaller

  25. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to David Brooks?

  A. The birth rates all over the world are becoming smaller.

  B. The most developed countries have higher death rates.

  C. Birth rate’s becoming smaller means a great risk to aging countries.

  D. America is the only most developed country with higher birth rate.

  26. Which will be caused by low birth rates according to the passage?

  A. Aging society. B. High death rates.

  C. Low employment rates. D. Environmental problems.

  27. What’s the author’s attitude to the worldwide birth rates becoming smaller?

  A. Anxious. B. Hopeful. C. Doubtful. D. Disappointed.

Ever since I was old enough to dream, I have imagined myself soaring with the eagles. My love of flying has shaped the way I live and the person I have become. Two years ago, that passion rocketed to new heights when I had the opportunity to visit Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Arizona. For a whole week I lived in a college dorm, roomed with a total stranger and— best of all — I flew!

My group took part in activities ranging from learning about the history of aviation (航空)to flying in state-of-the-art pilot training simulators (模擬裝置At least once a day, I devoted myself to learning one of the world’s best training aircrafts, the Cessna 182. Not only did I receive thorough ground instruction, but I also got to fly. In total, I flew five hours to receive my private pilot’s license. In that one joyous and oh-so-short week, my passion for aviation grew even stronger. Now, whenever I see a plane flying overhead, I feel a sense of pride thinking I,ve done that.

During my time in and above the Arizona desert, I learned not only about the mechanics and techniques of aviation, but also about myself and how I see the world. As I floated in that seemingly endless sea of air, I became aware of the variety and complexity of the humanity below. On the ribbons of roadways, each tiny car carried people with hopes and dreams. I wondered if any of those people had ever wished to fly like an eagle. Then I realized that each must have his or her own dreams and ambitions. That’s what makes us unique. We try to respond to something special inside us. I also realized that I was especially fortunate to be making my own dream come true.

Everywhere I go, I hear, “Do what makes you happy and you will be happy.” It sounds like standard advice, but I,ve really thought about it and taken it to heart I couldn’t care less about how much money I make or what benefits I receive. I know that I am already in hot pursuit(追逐)of my dreams. And, even if they change, even if they finally don’t involve aviation, I'll always aim to fly with the eagles.

  28. Two years ago,the author_.

  A. was admitted to a university B. saw the launch of the rocket

  C. stayed in a university for one week D. made good friends with an astronaut

  29. Paragraph 2 is mainly about_.

  A. how the author learned to fly B. which aircraft the author got to fly

  C. why the author got a pilot’s license D. what the author learned about simulators

  30. According to the author,_makes people unique.

  A. flying like an eagle B. having their own dreams

  C. trying something special D. learning unusual techniques

  31. From the last paragraph, we can learn that the author_.

  A. offers advice wherever he goes B. brings happiness to others

  C. cares a lot about money and benefits D. pursues his aims whatever happens

  D

It’s rare that you see the words “shyness” and “leader” in the same sentence. After all, the common viewpoint is that those outgoing and sociable guys make great public speakers and excellent networkers and that those shy people are not. A survey conducted by USA Today referred to 65 percent of executives who believed shyness to be a barrier to leadership. Interestingly, the same article stresses that roughly 40 percent of leaders actually are quite shy _ they,re just better at adapting themselves to situational demands. Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and Charles Schwab are just a few “innies.”

Unlike their outgoing counterparts who are more sensitive to rewards and risk-taking, shy people take a cautious approach to chance. Rather than the flashy chit-chat that defines social gatherings, shy people listen attentively to what others say and absorb it before they speak. They’re not thinking about what to say while the other person is still talking, but rather listening so they can learn what to say. Along the same lines, shy people share a common love of learning. They are intrinsically (內(nèi)在地)motivated and therefore seek content regardless of achieving an outside standard.

Being shy can also bring other benefits. Remember being in school and hearing the same kids contribute, until shy little Johnny, who almost never said a word, cut in? Then what happened? Everyone turned around to look with great respect at little Johnny actually talking. This is how shy people made good use of their power of presence: they “own” the moment by speaking calmly and purposefully, which translates to a positive image.

Shyness is often related to modesty. Not to say that limelight-seekers aren’t modest, but shy people tend to have an accurate sense of their abilities and achievements. As a result, they are able to acknowledge mistakes, imperfections, knowledge gaps and limitations.

Since shy people have a lower sensitivity to outside rewards than outgoing ones, they5re more comfortable working with little information and sticking to their inner desires. Shy people are also more likely to insist on finding solutions that aren’t primarily apparent. Don’t believe me? Maybe you’ll believe Albert Einstein, who once said, “It’s not that I’m so smart. It’s that I stay with problems longer.” Obviously, finding certainty where uncertainty is typically popular is a huge plus for any successful person.

The myth that shy people are less effective leaders than their outgoing fellows is just a misunderstanding. Make wise use of your personality strengths to lead your business no matter what side of the range you fall on.

  32. We can learn from Paragraph 2 that_.

  A. shy people care more about content

  B. shy people are sensitive to rewards

  C. outgoing people are more careful about chances

  D. outgoing people consider what to learn while listening

  33. The example of Johnny shows_.

  A. shy people are likely to be modest

  B. hardworking students speak little in public

  C. some students keep silent on purpose at school

  D. shy people may have an advantage in discussion

  34. We can learn from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5 that_.

  A. outside reward leads to insistence

  B. success results from devotion

  C. shyness contributes to popularity

  D. uncertainty counts more than certainty

  35. The author supports his ideas mainly by_.

  A. quoting authorities and making evaluations

  B. explaining problems and providing solutions

  C. making contrasts and giving examples

  D. giving definitions and presenting research results

According to statistics published by the University of Scranton, about 45 percent of Americans usually make New Year’s resolutions _ and the most popular resolution is losing weight. Of those who make resolutions, a mere 8 percent achieve them.

36 Are just setting ourselves up for failure? Learn how to make realistic resolutions and how to overcome the roadblocks along the way.

Setting a resolutio11 to lose 15 pounds isn’t a goal that’s achievable now. It may be a good long-term goal. 37 Registered dietitian Elisa Zied says, “...to be real when you make a resolution. It’s okay to shoot for the stars like making a resolution to run a marathon, but why not set a smaller goal and train smart?”

The same concept applies to weight loss. 38 These goals should help develop healthy habits that will finally help achieve your long-term resolution.

Notice that these goals are simple and achievable. “Instead of going from zero to 60,from never going to the gym to going four to five times a week, why not start with three days a week, get consistent and build from there,” Zied says. “Set yourself up for success and map out your course by making appointments with yourself to be active. 39

You also need to be aware of your current exercise and eating habits to make achievable goals. Keeping a diary of your food and exercise habits can help. Record everything you eat and drink for three to five days and review it. 40 For example, if you notice a tendency to snack on unhealthy fare, set a goal to eat a fruit or vegetable with each snack. Building on these smaller goals over time can help you achieve your long-term goal.

  A. So why do so many of us fail to achieve our goals?

  B. Once you notice your not-so-good habits, start fixing them.

  C. Set between one to three weekly goals that you want to achieve.

  D. Resolutions usually involve a commitment to sticking to your goals.

  E. However, in order to reach it, you need to take baby steps to get it done.

  F. If you treat your goals like set appointments, you’re more likely to achieve them

  G. Losing weight, as well as getting a better job,is among the most popular resolutions for adults.

We were shocked at the cruelty of the war. Then we gathered in another room and listened to an old soldier telling the stories about the war. Therefore, we had a better understanding of the history.

Before we left, we all came to the front of the museum and took a picture with the old soldier in memory of our visit. We were very glad to meet such a true hero.
