There are works of fiction that are published, enjoyed, but after a few years, more or less disappear. Then there are novels that don’t just have literary success, but major cultural impact. One such book is One Hundred Years of Solitude, whose 50th anniversary is this year. It was written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (1927-2014).

It is an epic(史詩) tale of the nation of Colombia, from the country’s founding to Marquez’s own time. The novel is a major example of a revolution in South American writing that was to have a far-reaching influence on global literature. The method of writing that Marquez and others are credited with inventing, “magic realism”,switched normal storytelling into a style where anything could happen.

Marquez treats Colombian history skeptically. He focuses on political corruption(腐敗), civil war and the negative influence of American big business. And while this could be a description of a very conventional novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude is anything but conventional.

It took a memory of his grandmother to show him the right way to write the novel. He recalled that when she told him stories in his childhood, she would put on a “brick face”. Marquez remembered this trick and began to write the novel differently. He wrote, “If you tell something to someone with an absolutely serious expression on your face, you have a chance of them believing what you say.” It seems that mastering this trick of his grandmother’s helped Marquez create one of the greatest literary works of the 20th century.

  24. What do we know about One Hundred Years of Solitude from Paragraph 1?

  B. It came out as a failure.

  C. It holds an important status.

  D. It faded away after publishing.

  25. Why did the novel have a deep effect on global literature?

  A. It created the magic realism.

  B. It is an epic tale of Colombia.

  C. It tells a South American revolution.

  D. It used a normal storytelling method.

  26. How does the author think of Marquez’s writing style?

  A. Skeptical B. Realistic. C. Conventional. D. Untraditional.

  27. What does the underlined phrase “brick face” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

  A. Serious look. B. Funny expression.

  C. Beautiful dress. D. Strong face mask.C

HandEnergy is an apple-sized device (設備) that charges your phone anytime, anywhere. But what really makes this thing special is the fact that it uses your own personal energy to do it.

In a time where power-banks (充電寶) and solar-power devices have become mainstream, a device that lets you charge doesn’t sound very special. But while power-banks have to be charged the old fashioned way, and solar-power devices need the sun to store energy, HandEnergy just needs a hand. To get this little guy to produce energy, which it then stores in built-in batteries, all you have to do is hold it in your hand and rotate (旋轉) your wrists.

To use HandEnergy, users start by winding a starter ring. This sends a signal to activate the rotor (旋轉器), at which point they can start rotating their wrists to keep the rotor spinning. It might sound hard to believe, but the rotor inside HandEnergy spins at an average speed of 5,000 rotations per minute, changing mechanical power into an electric current, and charging the built-in batteries. To charge a device, all you have to do is connect it to HandEnergy using a USB cable.

HandEnergy was successfully crowdfunded on Kickstarter, raising over ,000 m one month, and will be available for the masses in May 2018,at a price of . One thing is for sure—it beats paying thousands of dollars on a solar-powered charging device.

Meditation is a way to gain a better understanding of what is going on inside your head and your body, and it can help you have a better life.

There are almost endless different kinds of meditation but they all have one thing in common, the seated gesture. Sitting with your back straight and your legs crossed allows the body to become motionless for long enough to get in touch with the feelings you are having inside, and the effect those feelings are having on your state of mind.

All of the different forms of meditation have one purpose, to allow you to separate your “self” from what’s going on in your head! Why does this matter? Because most of what is going on in our heads isn’t very nice!

You see our brains have developed over millions of years, to help us survive. Back in the days of lions and tigers trying to eat us, we had to be very sensitive to dangers around us. Now, millions of years later, our minds are still programmed to seek out danger, so we tend to look at everything from a negative angle.

Well, it doesn’t need to be that way! Because we are not cave people anymore! The newest parts of our brain that have developed are where our feelings of love and happiness and creativity function lie.

Meditation helps us cool down the fear response that comes naturally to us, and helps us access the higher function areas of our brain.

This allows us to live happier, healthier and more productive lives. By having access to this new awesome area of the brain we can do better at school, perform better in sports, have better relationships with our parents and friends, and spot dangerous thoughts and behaviors before they lead us into trouble!

  32. What is the common thing in different kinds of meditation?

  A. Thinking deep in your mind. B. Sitting in the same style.

  C. Affecting your feelings inside. D. Helping to lead an active life.

  33. What is the purpose of practicing meditation?

  A. To tell us what happens in your head.

  B. To get in touch with the outside world.

  C. To separate yourself from what you think.

  D. To get rid of the strange thoughts in your brain.

  34. What causes us to look at things negatively?

  A. Many lions and tigers arc around us.

  B. We have bad relationships in society.

  C. Sensation to dangers continues until now.

  D. We lack the higher function areas of our brain.

  35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

  A. What is meditation? B. Meditation made simple.

  C. Meditation gestures. D. Forms of meditation.第二節(jié)(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

Not everyone wants to be a vegetarian. Accepting this is part of being a vegetarian with style. 40 Stylish vegetarians should also be able to turn down a meaty dish politely without annoying their hosts.

  A. What do vegetarians eat?

  D. Meal planning is important whatever diet you choose.

  Text 1

W: Good morning, Sir. What can I do for you?

M: I’m Bill. I’m in Room 908. Can you change the room for me? It’s too noisy.

  Text 2

M: Excuse me. Could you tell me where the library is?

W: Yes. You go three blocks to Washington Street, then turn right. It’s on the corner, across from the bank.

  Text 3

W: Are you going to study this evening?

M: Yes. Wait me for a while.

W: Hurry up. There are a lot of people studying these days. And there will be no seats left if we’re late.

  Text 4

W: You are an outgoing person, quite easy to talk with.

M: Yes, my friends like to get along with me well.

W: Do you have many friends?

M: Yes, I’d like to make new friends.

  Text 5

M: So what do you plan to do for the summer?

W: Well, I don’t know what I’m going to do with my free time yet.

M: Are you planning to take any summer classes?

W: No. I think I’ll just relax. I really need a long break.

  Text 6

M: Molly, I am going to KFC for lunch, would you like me to bring you back anything?

W: No, thanks, that won’t be necessary. I brought a lunch.

M: You always bring a lunchbox, why?

W: Don’t tell anyone, but I am on a diet. Fast food will make me fat.

M: We could get someone to deliver pizza.

W: Pizza is still fatty fast food.

M: But during the coffee break I saw you eating the cake that the boss gave you.

W: If the boss brings a cake, you eat it!

M: I guess that is why the boss likes you more.

W: You had better hurry to your fast food joint, you only have a half-hour.

  M: See you soon.

  Text 7

W: I am so mad at Sarah. I never want to talk to her again.

M: What happened? I thought she was your best friend.

W: She wrote a note saying bad things about me.

  M: A note?

W: Yes, to Maria. Now, Maria, she’s a good friend.

M: What do you mean “a good friend”?

W: A good friend cares about your feelings and wouldn’t say bad things about you to someone else.

M: I agree, but--- If Maria cared about your feelings, maybe she shouldn’t have mentioned the note. Well, I think you want a good friend to be honest and tell you the truth.

  W: Even if it hurts.

  M: Even if it hurts.Text 8

W: Radio has really changed a lot since we were young. It used to be the major source of fun for the family.

M: Nowadays when you turn on the radio, you either hear music, a talk show or news.

W: Fortunately you can choose the kind of music you want to hear.

M: Yes, and there is a lot of points of view when you listen to talk shows. I usually enjoy listening to them. I particularly like it when a caller disagrees with the talk show host. I like to hear how he will defend his ideas.

W: Some talk show hosts are very rude to those who have opposing ideas. I really find that terrible.

M: It seems that people only listen to the radio when they are driving in their car.

W: That is true for me, but I know that my husband listens to it while he is working at home.

M: Now that I think about it, I realize that a lot of stores have the radio playing.

W: It’s still a useful and pleasant form of communication.

  Text 9

M: I am really annoyed by this hot climate. The heat is getting on my nerves.

W: Yeah, even I am sweating heavily too.

M: I don’t know how long we have to bear up with this horrible weather! I wish rain arrive as soon as possible.

W: Well, but it’s still almost a month for the monsoon(雨季).

M: Oh! But at least, we are working in an air conditioned environment. There are traffic police, sweepers, courier boys who have to work outside. I wonder, how these people must be dealing with this hot summer? They are the real tough guys.

W: Yeah, you are right. One of my friends works at a pizza outlet. He has to continuously drive his bike to deliver pizza at the customer address within 30 minutes. Spare a thought how much he must be draining every day. Only God knows!

M: Do you think the global warming is to blame for this?

W: I can’t really say. But I could see marked difference in the climate nowadays.

For teenagers, We Were Liars by E. Lockhart is a good book. It tells about the children in a very rich family with a long history in the United States. They spend summers on a private island. They attend private schools. They are expected to create futures complete with beautiful marriages, important careers and successful children. But the family also has deep, dark secrets. They have serious problems and a habit of hiding those problems.第二節(jié) 書面表達(滿分25分)

  Dear Tom,

I’m delighted to tell you something about the volunteering activity I take part in.

I work at the exit of the railway station from 2 pm to 5 pm every Sunday afternoon. Knowing our city very well, I am responsible to keep order and tell passengers how to get to their destinations. In addition to giving them directions, I offer them information about hotels, traffic, scenic spots, etc.

The passengers appreciate my heart-warming service and think highly of my work, which greatly inspires me. This is really a worthwhile activity, from which I benefit a lot.

  Yours,

  Li Hua
