Nate suffered a great blow when he lost his job. His boss had spoken rudely, “Your services are no longer needed.” Nate left the building filled with despair. By the time he reached home, he was in a deep depression. When he entered his house, he blurted out to his wife Sophia, “I lost my job. I am a complete failure.” A tense silence followed. Then a smile crept across Sophia’s face. “What great news!” she responded. “Now you can write the book you have always wanted to write.”

“But I have no job and no prospect of a job, ” he objected, completely without hope. “ If I struggle to be an author, then what will we live on? Where will the money come from? ”

Sophia took her husband by the hand and led him to the kitchen. Opening a drawer, she took out a box that was full of cash. “ Where on earth did you get this? ” Nate gasped. “ To whom does it belong? ”

“ It’s ours! ” Sophia replied. “ I always knew that one day you would become a great writer if only you were given the chance. From the money you gave me for housekeeping every week, I have saved as much as I could so you would have your chance. Now there is enough to last us a whole year. ”

What a surprise! What a wife! The unemployed husband did concentrate on writing that year, and the novel he wrote became a literary masterpiece. The book is The Scarlet Letter. Sophia had an even greater achievement, and she turned Nathaniel Hawthorne from a poor clerk into a world famous master.

People tend to become more personal and hide less of themselves when using email . Researchers from Open University in Britain have found in a recent study that there are good reasons for this .

The team of researchers asked 83 pairs of students, all strangers to each other, to solve a problem. They had to discuss this question: If only five people in the world could be saved from a world disaster, who should they be? The pairs of students had to talk over the problem either face to face or by computers. Dr. Johnson said, “They told their partners four times as much about themselves when they talked over the Internet as when they talked face to face. When the computers were fitted with cameras so that students could see each other, this limited the personal side of the conversation.”

Generally the information was not extremely personal. It was mainly about things such as where they went to school, or where they used to live. But some students discussed their love stories, and personal childhood experiences.

Dr. Johnson believes that emailing encourages people to focus on themselves. And when they do this, they become more open, especially if there are no cameras. “If you cannot see the other person, it becomes easier to talk about yourself. This is because you are not thinking what the other person is thinking of you. So emailing has become the modern way of talking,” said Dr. Johnson. However, this style of talking is not entirely new. “In the 19th century people started to use the ‘telegraph’ to communicate. Now the same kind of thing has happened and people ended up speaking more freely.”

Dr. Johnson thinks that e-mailers need to know about these effects of emailing, especially when they start work in a company. “ If you don’t know about it, you could find yourself saying more about yourself than you wanted to.”

  60. The subject discussed in this passage is ________ .

  how people do research studies

  how to communicate at work

  63. In the writer’s opinion, one should ________ .

  focus on oneself when emailing

consider how one uses email at work

A sunflower is a sunflower . A mobile phone is a mobile phone . But can you combine the two to do something for your local environment?

As early as next year it may well be possible. When you have finished with your mobile phone you will be able to bury it in the garden or a plant pot and wait for it to flower. A biodegradable (能進(jìn)行生物遞降分解的) mobile phone was, this month, introduced by scientists.

Scientists have come up with a new material over the last five years. It looks like any other plastic and can be hard or soft, and able to change shape. Overtime it can also break down into the soil without giving out any toxic chemicals. British researchers used the new material to develop a phone cover that contains a sunflower seed. When this new type of cover turns into waste, it forms nitrates (硝酸鉀). These feed the seed and help the flower grow. Engineers have designed a small transparent window to hold the seed. They have made sure it only grows when the phone is thrown away. "We’ve only put sunflower seeds into the covers so far. But we are working with plant experts to find out which flowers would perform best. Maybe we could put roses in next time," said one scientist.

As phone technology is developing so quickly people are constantly throwing their mobiles away. This means manufacturers are under pressure to find ways of recycling them. Some 650 million mobile phones have been sold this year. Most of them will be thrown away within two years, adding plastic, heavy metal and chemical waste to the environment. A biodegradable cover can offer some relief for nature, according to the scientists. "The seed is released and the flower grows in the pot so you don’t have to concern yourself with the phone when you have finished using it," said Kerry Kirwan. She leads the research team, which is based at the University of Warwick in Britain.

  68. The main idea of the passage is ________ .

the relationship between high tech and environment

phone can be turned into flowers

  mobile phone and environment

  69. The purpose of introducing a biodegradable mobile phone is ______ .

  70. What is the possible meaning of the underlined word ?

  A. pleasant B. poisonous C. useful D. new

  71. Which of the following statements is NOT true ?

Engineers have designed a small transparent window to hold the rose seed .

There are many theories about the beginning of drama in ancient Greece . The one most widely accepted today is based on the assumption that drama evolved(演化)from ceremony . The argument for this view goes as follows .

In the beginning , human beings viewed the natural forces of the world—even the seasonal changes—as unpredictable , and they sought through various means to control these unknown and feared powers . Those measures which appeared to bring the desired results were then kept and repeated until they hardened into fixed ceremonies . Eventually stories arose which explained the mysteries of the ceremonies . As time passed some ceremonies were abandoned , but the stories , later called myths , remained and provided material for art and drama .

Those who believe that drama evolved out of ceremony also argue that those ceremonies contained the seed of theater because music , dance , masks , and costumes were almost always used . Furthermore , a suitable site had to be provided for performances and when the entire community did not participate , a clear division was usually made between the “ acting area ” and the “ auditorium ” . In addition , there were performers , and , since considerable importance was attached to avoiding mistakes in the performing of ceremonies , religious leaders usually took that task . Wearing masks and costumes , they often acted other people , animals , or supernatural beings , and imitated the desired effect—success in hunt or battle , the coming rain , etc. –as an actor might . Eventually such dramatic representations were separated from religious activities .

Another theory traces the theater’s origin from the human interest in story telling . According to this view , tales ( about the hunt , war , etc ) are gradually developed , at first through the use of action and dialogue , and then through the assumption of each of the roles by a different person . A closely related theory traces theater to those dances that are primarily rhythmical and gymnastic or that are imitations of animal movements and sounds .

  72. Which is the best title of the passage ?

Religious activities in ancient Greece .

The ceremonies in ancient Greece .

  Drama theories .

The origin of Greek Drama .

  73. In tracing the beginning of drama , which of the following is not mentioned ?

  A. Planting . B. Religious ceremonies .

  C. Gymnastic . D. Storytelling .

  74. What do drama and ancient ceremonies have in common according to the passage ?

Both of them were performed in theaters .

Music , dance , masks , costumes and so on were contained in both of them .

Religious leaders were in charge of both of them .

Both of them were concerned about natural power .

  75. It can be inferred from the passage that ________ .

human beings loved to tell stories

people could do nothing about nature

religious leaders tried to develop the effective form of drama

religious activities played a very important role in the evolvement of drama .第II卷(共35分)
