一、客觀真實。不可否認(rèn)，無論是國內(nèi)還是國外，推薦信多少都有過譽(yù)之處，但決不能胡吹一通，畢竟申請人是去進(jìn)一步深造學(xué)習(xí)的，倘若已經(jīng)“非常完美”又何必負(fù)笈海外呢!
二、真實事例。通過真實事例表現(xiàn)出來的申請人的品質(zhì)和能力才最為可信，更有說服力。無論是推薦信還是現(xiàn)實生活中，我們在評估一個人的時候，要切忌空洞，滿篇華麗的言辭固然漂亮，但沒有認(rèn)可真實可靠的事例支撐的話，依然是沒有參考價值的。
三、注意書寫的角度和口吻。由于推薦信是通過第三人對申請人的評價，所以申請人在撰寫的時候要注意表達(dá)方式和角度。轉(zhuǎn)換思維方式，盡量以教授或其他推薦人的口吻和角度來書寫。

1.選擇推薦人

書寫推薦信的最理想人選是一封由系主任寫， 一封由專業(yè)課教授寫， 一封由自己的導(dǎo)師寫。不過，對方若無規(guī)定，則除了自己的親屬之外，任何人皆可為推薦人。推薦人一般應(yīng)具備高級技術(shù)職稱，如教授、副教授、研究員、副研究員等。如果推薦人曾經(jīng)在該校講過學(xué)，那么這樣的推薦人寫的推薦信就具有很強(qiáng)的效力了。
2. 推薦信的內(nèi)容
推薦信一般應(yīng)包括下列內(nèi)容：
(1)被推薦人的基本情況介紹。側(cè)重于個人的畢業(yè)時間、學(xué)校、所獲學(xué)位以及個人的專業(yè)經(jīng)歷。
(2)推薦人對被推薦人的基本評價。側(cè)重于被推薦人的專業(yè)基礎(chǔ)、個性、特點、工作態(tài)度和在學(xué)術(shù)上的前途估計。若是推薦研究生，推薦人還需進(jìn)一步說明其深造學(xué)習(xí)的基礎(chǔ)和當(dāng)前所具備的研究能力。顯然，恰如其分地評價被推薦人的基礎(chǔ)、能力和前途，比言過其實地贊譽(yù)更令人信服，更具有實際意義。
(3)推薦人可以著重介紹被推薦人曾經(jīng)獲得的獎勵、發(fā)表過的論文、參加過的重要學(xué)術(shù)會議，以及曾在學(xué)生組織或?qū)W術(shù)團(tuán)體中的任職等來支持自己的評價。
(4)推薦人還必須清楚地表明被推薦人留學(xué)的身份是研究生還是訪問學(xué)者，專業(yè)領(lǐng)域和研究方向是什么。
(5)如果大學(xué)提供了現(xiàn)成的推薦表格，則必須按這類表格認(rèn)真逐項填寫。推薦表格中一般有學(xué)生綜合評估項，即要求推薦人說明該生在其所教的學(xué)生中應(yīng)列為前5% 、10% 或25% 等。這種評估是指教授的個人評價，可以稍高一點。另外，推薦表格上常有許多難以填寫的項目，遇到這種情形可填"I don' t know" ，亦不致對該生的評價有什么嚴(yán)重的影響。
(6)推薦信結(jié)尾必須有推薦人的親筆簽名，最好直接由推薦人寄給學(xué)校招生辦官員或申請就讀學(xué)校的系主任。如果由被推薦人寄送，可將推薦信裝人信封內(nèi)封好后由推薦人在信封口處親筆簽名以示保密。信封正面注明"Letter of Recommendation" ，表明這是一封推薦信。

as the director of the department of computer sciences of wuhan university of technology, which is one of the most prestigious engineering universities in china, i deem it a pleasure to recommend mr. nathan wang, one of the outstanding students in our department for admission and assistantship you're your graduate program.
since his enrollment into our department with remarkable entrance scores, wang has embodied the fine character of strong inquisition and industriousness in learning, which has gained him significant academic success during his college years. i am aware of his distinctive academic performance as reflected in his transcripts. he maintains a very high gpa that places him in the top 5% out of 150 through the past 3 years, winning scholarships of the department almost every year. in the college english speech contest organized by the teaching committee of hubei province, he excelled most of other contestants, winning the first prize in the region-wide preliminary contest, and the third prize in the final of the provincial level, being the sole participant representing our university.
