No young man believes he shall ever die. It was a saying of my brother's, and a fine one. There is a feeling of Eternity in youth, which makes us amend for everything. To be young is to be as one of the Immortal Gods. One half of time indeed is flown--the other half remains in store for us with all its countless treasures; for there is no line drawn, and we see no limit to our hopes and wishes. We make the coming age our own.

年輕人不相信自己會死。這是我哥哥的話,可算得一句妙語。青春有一種永生之感--它能彌補一切。人在青年時代好像一尊永生的神明。誠然,生命的一半已經(jīng)消失,但蘊藏著不盡財富的另一半還有所保留,我們對它也抱著無窮的希望和幻想。未來的時代完全屬于我們--

The vast, the unbounded prospect lies before us.

Death, old age, are words without a meaning, that pass by us like the idle air which we regard not. Others may have undergone, or may still be liable to them--we "bear a charmed life", which laughs to scorn all such sickly fancies. As in setting out on delightful journey, we strain our eager gaze forward.

And see no end to the landscape, new objects presenting themselves as we advance; so, in the commencement of life, we set no bounds to our inclinations, nor to the unrestricted opportunities of gratifying them. We have as yet found no obstacle, no disposition to flag; and it seems that we can go on so forever. We look round in a new world, full of life, and motion, and ceaseless progress; and feel in ourselves all the vigour and spirit to keep pace with it, and do not foresee from any present symptoms how we shall be left behind in the natural course of things, decline into old age, and drop into the grave. It is the simplicity, and as it were abstractedness to our feelings in youth, that (so to speak) identifies us with nature, and (our experience being slight and our passions strong) deludes us into a belief of being immortal like it. Our short-lives connection with existence we fondly flatter ourselves, is an indissoluble and lasting union--a honeymoon that knows neither coldness, jar, nor separation. As infants smile and sleep, we are rocked in the cradle of our wayward fancies, and lulled into security by the roar of the universe around us--we quaff the cup of life with eager haste without draining it, instead of which it only overflows the more--objects press around us, filling the mind with their magnitude and with the strong of desires that wait upon them, so that we have no room for the thoughts of death.

此時,但覺好風光應(yīng)接不暇,而且,前程更有美不勝收的新鮮景致。在這生活的開端,我們聽任自己的志趣馳聘,放手給它們一切滿足的機會。到此時為止,我們還 沒有碰上過什么障礙,也沒有感覺到什么疲憊,因此覺得還可以一直這樣向前走去,直到永遠。我們看到四周一派新天地--生機盎然,變動不居,日新月異;我們 覺得自己活力充盈,精神飽滿,可與宇宙并駕齊驅(qū)。而且,眼前也無任何跡象可以證明,在大自然的發(fā)展過程中,我們自己也會落伍,衰老,進入墳?zāi)?。由于年輕人 天真單純,可以說是茫然無知,因而將自己跟大自然劃上等號;并且,由于經(jīng)驗少而感情盛,誤以為自己也能和大自然一樣永世長存。我們一廂情愿,癡心妄想,竟 把自己在世上的暫時棲身,當作千古不變、萬世長存的結(jié)合,好像沒有冷淡、爭執(zhí)、離別的蜜月。像嬰兒帶著微笑入睡,我們躺在用自己編織成的搖籃里,讓大千世 界的萬籟之聲催哄我們安然入夢;我們急切切,興沖沖地暢飲生命之杯,怎么也不會飲干,反而好像永遠是滿滿欲溢的;森羅萬象紛至沓來,各種欲望隨之而生,使 我們騰不出工夫去想死亡。

If you could choose what kind of world to live in, what kind of world would you choose? If you could decide what would happen tomorrow, with what kinds of things would you fill it?

If you had the power to decide what types of opportunities would come your way, what opportunities would you select? If you knew that your experiences would match your expectations, what would your expectations be?

In fact, you do have the power to choose your own way. You do have the ability to decide what kinds of events, experiences, opportunities and circumstances come your way.

The world you experience is the world that your dreams, your thoughts, your expectations and your actions most closely resonate_. The world you see and live in is the world you most sincerely expect to see.

The universe is filled with endless possibilities, and those possibilities keep growing with every minute. The way you live determines which of those possibilities will come into your life.

With your thoughts, your actions, your values, your dreams and expectations, you choose what kind of world you live in. The way you live is closely mirrored in the world you see.

Fourscore and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth upon this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now, we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting-place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us, the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us---that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion; that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain; that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom; and that government of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple1) knees; it is a matter of will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means a temperamental2) predominance3) of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting4) our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: So long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite5), so long are you young.

When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism6) and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20; but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.

青春不是年華,而是心境;青春不是桃面、丹唇、柔膝,而是深沉的意志、恢弘的想象、炙熱的感情;青春是生命的深泉在涌動。 青春氣貫長虹,勇銳蓋過怯弱,進取壓倒茍安。如此銳氣,二十年后生而有之,六旬男子則更多見。年歲有加,并非垂老,理想丟棄,方墮暮年。

歲月悠悠,衰弱只及肌膚;熱忱拋卻,頹廢必致靈魂。憂煩,惶恐,喪失自信,定使心靈扭曲,意氣如灰。

無論年屆花甲,抑或二八芳齡,心中皆有生命之歡樂,奇跡之誘惑,孩童般天真久盛不衰。人人皆有一臺天線,只要你從天上人間接受美好、希望、歡樂、勇氣和力量的信號,你就青春永駐,風華常存。

一旦天線倒塌,銳氣使冰雪覆蓋、玩世不恭、自暴自棄油然而生,即使年方二八,實已垂垂老矣,然則只要豎起天線,捕捉樂觀信號,你就有望在八十高齡告別塵寰時仍覺年輕。

Today is an excellent day for small improvements. Whatever is working for you, find a way to improve it just a little. There’s no need to make a huge change, just a small one, something you can do right now.

If you called just one additional customer each day, over the course of the next month you would talk to about 20 new people. If you learned just one more new word each day, in the next year you would increase your vocabulary by more than 300 words. Small improvements can add up over time into big accomplishments. Look around you. Consider the work you do each day. Think about how you could do it just a little bit better.

In a marathon race, each step the winner takes is just a little bit longer and a little bit faster than each stride taken by the 100th place finisher. Yet over the course of the race, that small difference adds up in a big way.

Do just a little bit more today, and tomorrow too, and each day after that. Anyone can make just a small improvement, and that can make a big, big difference.
