For decades, research has shown that children’s books not only provide great pleasure to readers, but they can also play an important role in children’s academic (學(xué)業(yè)上的) and social success. In 1974, researchers reported that sixth-grade children who had been read to from an early age developed into better readers and valued reading more than did six graders who had not been read to, and they expected to continue reading throughout their lives. Others have determined that the more time children spend reading literature (文學(xué)作品) ,the better their reading and writing abilities become. Significant increases have been found in young children’s comprehension and vocabulary skills, their understanding of sentence structure and story structure as a result of their being read to from an early age, either at home or in school. Children who have access to literature and stories in their homes have been found to learn to read more quickly, and have better attitudes toward reading. Teachers who provide time for continuous silent reading, who share books and discuss book authors with children during the school day, positively influence those children’s reading outside school. And the National Assessment of Educational Progress reported that children who frequently read for enjoyment out of school are better readers.

Because children’s literature is so valuable to children, it should also be valuable to their teachers. And so it’s unfortunate that something that can play such an important role in children’s lives is often moved into a less important role in teacher education.

This article discusses three important issues about the position of children’s literature in teacher-preparation programs. They are: (1) Respect for children’s literature content in teacher education. (2) The value of children’s literature as a powerful educational tool. (3) Children’s literature as an important literature form.

  54. The author mentions the research results in 1974 to show_____

  A. the development of reading ability in sixth graders

  B. the ways of teaching children to become better readers

  C. the importance of early reading in children’s academic growth

  D. the difference in reading skills between sixth graders and pre-school children

  55. We can learn from the text that if children read more books they _____

  A. will be able to write better

  B. will have better exam results in school

  C. will be good at silent reading at school

  D. will be able to choose suitable books for themselves

  56. According to the author, better readers are those who _____

  A. find pleasure reading in any kind of books

  B. perform better in reading tests in school

  C. are good at finding out structure of stories they read

  D. get into the habit of reading books for fun outside school

  57. The paragraph following the text most probably discusses _____

  A. the publication of children’s books

  B. the types of children’s literature

  C. the use of children’s literature in teacher education programs

  D. the role of children’s books in children’s academic development

  C

Most people know that Marie Curie was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize, and the first person to win it twice. However, few people know that she was also the mother of a Nobel Prize winner.

Born in September, 1897, Irene Curie was the first of the Curies' two daughters. Along with nine other children whose parents were also famous scholars, Irene studied in their own school, and her mother was one of the teachers. She finished her high school education at the College of Sévigné in Paris.

Irene entered the University of Paris in 1914 to prepare for a degree in mathematics and physics. When World War I began, Irene went to help her mother, who was using X-ray facilities (設(shè)備) to help save the lives of wounded soldiers. Irene continued the work by developin g X-ray facilities in military hospitals in France and Belgium. Her services were recognised in the form of a Military Medal by the French government.

In 1918, Irene became her mother's assistant at the Curie Institute. In December 1924, Frederic Joliot joined the Institute, and Irene taught him the techniques required for his work. They soon fell in love and were married in 1926. Their daughter Helene was born in 1927 and their son Pierre five years later.

Like her mother, Irene combined family and career. Like her mother, Irene was awarded a Nobel Prize, along with her husband, in 1935. Unfortunately, "also like her mother, she developed leukemia because of her work with radioactivity (輻射能). Irene Joliot-Curie died from leukemia on March 17, 1956.

  58. Why was Irene Curie awarded a Military Medal?

  A. Because she received a degree in mathematics.

  B. Because she contributed to saving the wounded.

Below is a selection from a popular science book.

If blood is red, why are veins (靜脈) blue?

Actually, veins are not blue at all. They are more of a clear, yellowish colour. Although blood looks red when it's outside the body, when it's sitting in a vein near the surface of the skin, it's more of a dark reddish purple color. At the right depth, these blood-filled veins reflect less red light than the surrounding skin, making them look blue by comparison.

Which works harder, your heart or your brain?

Which works harder depends on whether you are busy thinking or busy exercising. Your heart works up to three times harder during exercise, and shifts enough blood over a lifetime to fill a supertanker. But, in the long run, your brain probably tips it, because even when you’re sitting still your brain is using twice as much energy as your heart, and it takes four to five times as much blood to feed it.

Why do teeth fall out, and why don't they grow back in grown-ups?

Baby (or "milk") teeth do not last long; they fall out to make room for bigger, stronger adult teeth later on. Adult teeth fall out when they become damaged, decayed and infected by bacteria. Once this second set of teeth has grown in, you're done. When they're gone, they’re gone. This is because nature figures you're set for life, and what controls regrowth of your teeth switches off.

Do old people shrink as they age?

Yes and no. Many people do get shorter as they age. But, when they do, it isn't because they're shrinking all over. They simply lose height as their spine(脊柱) becomes shorter and more curved due to disuse and the effects of gravity. Many (but not all) men and women do lose height as they get older. Men lose an average of 3-4 cm in height as they age, while women may lose 5 cm or more. If you live to be 200 years old, would you keep shrinking till you were, like 60 cm tall, like a little boy again? No, because old people don't really shrink! It is not that they are growing backwards — their legs, arms and backbones getting shorter. When they do get shorter, it's because the spine has shortened a little or, more often, become more bent and curved.

Why does spinning(旋轉(zhuǎn)) make you dizzy (眩暈的)?

Because your brain gets confused between what you're seeing and what you're feeling. The brain senses that you’re spinning using special gravity-and-motion-sensing organs in your inner ear, which work together with your eyes to keep your vision and balance stable. But when you suddenly stop spinning the system goes out of control, and your brain thinks you're moving while you're not!

Where do feelings and emotions come from?

Mostly from an ancient part of the brain called the limbic system. All mammals have this brain area — from mice to dogs, cats, and humans. So all mammals feel basic emotions like fear, pain and pleasure. But since human feelings also involve other newer bits of the brain, we feel more complex emotions than any other animal on the planet.

If exercise wears you out, how can it be good for you?

Because our bodies adapt to everything we do to them. And as far as your body is concerned, it’s "use it, or lose it”! It's not that exercise makes you healthy; it's more that a lack of exercise leaves your body weak and easily affected by disease.

  62. What is the color of blood in a vein near the surface of the skin?

  A. Blue. B. Light yellow. C. Red. D. Dark reddish purple.

  63. Why do some old people look a little shrunken as they age?

  A. Because their spine is in active use.

  B. Because they are more easily affected by gravity.

  C. Because they keep growing backwards.

  D. Because their spine becomes more bent.

  64. Which of the following statements about our brain is true?

  A. In the long run, our brain probably works harder than our heart.

  B. When our brain senses the spinning, we will fell dizzy.

  C. The brains of the other mammals are as complex as those of humans.

  D. Our feelings and emotions come from the most developed area in our brain.

  65. What is the main purpose of the selection?

  A. To give advice on how to stay healthy.

  B. To provide information about our body.

  C. To challenge new findings in medical research.

  D. To report the latest discoveries in medical science.

  Traveling

I went out travelling with my parents during the last National Holiday. The general impression it made on me is that travelling is a good activity.

While travelling, you can not only appreciate the beauty of natural scenery but also breathe fresh air. At the same time, it is a way of exercising, which helps to keep you healthy. Moreover, in the journey, you may make some new friends and enrich your knowledge.

Many advantages as travelling has, some problems may still exist. Travelling for long with rare rest may be tiring. And some unexpected problems may occur during your journey, such as accidents, losing your belongings or getting ill.

Therefore, we need to make good preparations, especially a specific plan ahead of time. (124 words)
